The thing about Jem is that the original series was heavy with melodrama not a silly comedy (though it might seem so unintentionally at times), it wouldn't work as pure satire or a goofy joke

I'd transform the show into a competition for a record deal with the biggest company in the beginning. Think of that movie pitch perfect, its something like that. With Jerrica asked to participate because of her singing abilities by her friends. Jem at this point is not real as her real identity is Jerrica. Jerrica is shy and comes up with Jem as an alternate persona that can get her to perform on stage. They encounter several other including the Misfits, led by Pizzazz, who is not rich but poor and comes from a broken family. She is the polar opposite to Jem and as such they develop a bit of a rivalry to see who is better. Jem has the energy and happy vibe that can get people moving while Pizzazz has the emotion and raw music ability that creates incredible music that can make people pause and listen to the sound she creates. You can think of it like each artist has their own style similar to Madonna and Paramore. Eventually Jerrica develops a dissociative personality disorder and Jem begins to take over and become a bit of an asshole especially to Pizzazz, which will eventually cement her hatred for Jem. This will also affect her relationship with her friends too until Jerrica can get her personality under control again. Though by this time it will be too late. A winner will be announced and that will lead to a new story line dealing with the aftermath in the later seasons. That's just season 1.

Also there's the comic relief who is like the Ricky Martin of that world, funny but competent in his music.

You underestimate the story. The competition is just to get things started. It is the main goal but the majority of the story takes place outside. Once the competition is over, it will no longer be the focus. Their focus will shift internationally as they begin their music careers and dealing with some of the fall out from season one. As it will turn out the biggest record company is actually evil and is currently using the winner to lay foundations to other venues around the world to push their "products" unto the masses. They are aware of the rivalry with Jem and the Misfits and use that as a cover by upping the anger to crazy proportions and then covering it up if it gets too big.

All the music in Jem was "pop" music regardless of the fictional band, the Holograms were presented as the more mainstream media darling act with songs about positibity while the Misfits were presented as the edgy act with songs mostly about being selfish decadent brats, it doesn't really matter what kind of music they were since the whole thing was an over dramatic cartoon portrayal of the music business for kids

Jem and the Holograms is so inherently 80s. I think the only they could do with it is to keep it in the 80s. Maybe even make it more flamboyant and sensational. They'd fix some more outdated and offensive tropes and boom.

>Sabotage by humans mostly, until the alien of the Misfits finds a loophole, makes lasers during Misfit concerts that inconvenience Synergy
>Ends with literal battle of the bands using lasers
>When the other aliens find out, the temporary truce gets broken and they head for Earth as their battleground, as humans are considered lessers
>Misfits and Holograms need to make a hit song together to convince them not to destroy the Earth.

And THAT'S how you make a good reboot movie.
