I hope nobody minds if I stay on last thread's topic of intentional restrictions for a bit; it actually gave me some food for thought.

-Process-wise, the first thing I decided about the comic was that I wasn't going to avoid drawing anything because it was hard, time-consuming or I didn't know how to do it. I was gonna take the time to learn how to do it, even if it meant delays.
-In addition, if I get constructive criticism, I'll try not to just disregard it, even if I disagree with it or it sounds dumb; I'll ask the person to clarify what they mean and try implementing it before I make a decision so my butthurt has time to cool.
-No pages that don't progress the plot; that means no pages with just jokes and no action scenes where the situation is stable for more than a single page.
-Try not to skip over details that would inconvenience the plot.

The rest of my don'ts is mostly about the way I present information to the reader;
-don't show anyone's thoughts directly in thought bubbles or similar (Yeah, I've made Skeggi talk to herself once or twice to get around this, but I'm not proud of it)
-while the "camera" might focus on things to imply what's going on in a character's head, barring magical visions or dreams, it only shows objective physical reality, so no turning a panel completely red to show how angry a character is unless the anger is actually affecting the photons in the scene.
-Similarly, text bubbles only change color to imply an inhuman quality to the speaker's voice.

And a few things I try to keep in mind to reinforce the protagonist's viewpoint
-The camera should generally not care that a woman is sexy. Skeggi is a straight woman who grew up in a culture with very little notion of privacy and genuinely doesn't care about other womens' appearances. Sexy men should either be ogled or censored depending on how hard Skeggi's trying not to stare.
-It's not that Skeggi is short, it's that anyone above 4'11" is tall.
>>
>>95156754
Love the faces on that elf.
>No pages that don't progress the plot; that means no pages with just jokes and no action scenes where the situation is stable for more than a single page.
that explains your pace. I've noticed it's very stable. To me it feels like the equivalent of handmade gif animations or flipbooks, the way that each frame has more of a discrete value than usual, so you end up seeing something that's distributed very evenly along all of its frames.
I never thought before about how it's Skeggi's viewpoint, but now that you say that...
It's really interesting finding out the different ways people restrict themselves. I'm also interested in knowing the whys of it. For every person who thinks it genuinely makes a comic better (or just that they like it that way, or both, or the two are the same thing) there's at least 1.3 people who restrict themselves out of some kind of compulsion. I know I do.

that should be piece by the way. also french bat is a cutie even if her wings are odd.
also while most of the french here is good enough, i don't think the average schmoe knows marché means market (even if it was a fantastic gag on The Simpsons once and they expected at least some of the audience to understand "beau marché" = kwik-e-mart)

Ack,I knew there was a reason I got a C in French. I just used Google Translate for the French.
>>
>>95162191
I mean it's grammatically correct, it's just not at a vocabulary level you want for an anglophone audience.

... actually now that I look at it, that's not even remotely grammatically correct. If you want to say "you artists have a real nice market" you'd say "vos artistes ont un excellent marché"
vos is "youse" basically. you in the plural. and ont is to-have in the vous voice
though I get the feeling the word you're looking for is you've got a real nice RACKET, in which case the French is raquette but i THINK that might only refer to... like, what you use in tennis. However even if it's wrong, it's a cognate, see? so the anglophone audience will pick up on it.
>>
>What kind of things do you just not let yourself do?
Above PG-13 content. Spooky stuff. Boring Filler.
>Is it because you're scared, unable to do it properly, or just an aversion to when comics do that?
All of the above. I'm unable to draw anything either. Pages where nothing happens bore me desu.
>Are there colors you hate using?
I hate rainbows and anything that hurts the eyes. I like black and red apparently.
>Cliches you avoid?
Fanservice in general. I worry more about keeping my plot's formula in-line than outright avoiding cliches. Cliches are tropes, and tropes are simply tools.

I swear, people always respond like 2 minutes after I have to leave.
Good to hear Bjǫrkdís is working as intended - I realized I was gonna have several pages of people just walking and talking in a forest, so I'm trying my hardest to make it funny at least.
I'm actually not super happy about the very stable pace - I'd love to have bigger peaks and valleys in the tension, but at the rate I update I'd feel a bit cheated as a reader if I checked in and things hadn't moved on at least a little since last week.

We have the first part of a short story giving insight into the lore and backstory of the Magical Girl comic we entered in the last contest.

It's about a girl traveling to the magical world of Croatoan where everything is alive, even the air and stars, so she can learn from its Empress-the first ever mahou shojo.

Read it here:

http://www.capeworldcomics.com/comic/magical-woman-1/

Criticism and comments are very welcomed

Interesting factoids:

Knockers are related to stars.

Stars are terrified of their own reflection.

Modern Croatoans are the miscegenated descendants of natives and cosmically displaced Massachusetts Puritans from the 16th century.

The Puritans were brought to Croatoan by Solomon Kane's Staff of Solomon which traded hands in the Puritan community until it ended up in Salem.

It is also Magical Woman's Dreamstaff. The one with the cat head. It looks that way because its appearance matches the personality of whoever wields it.

In this setting most magical girls result from the goddess Amaterasu bleeding over Japan following a battle with Pele during Pearl Harbor. The spilt blood tinted the souls of those it touched and gave them a divine power that passes down from mother to daughter.

What do you think thread?

I get you man. I meant to get back to my Witch's Hill comic quickly, but ever since my Merchant & Pike comic got more popular than Witch's Hill, I'm tempted to keep working on M&P, even though Witch's Hill actually has a story that I've planned out for quite a while.

>Always hated when the main protagonist of a work of fiction begins training at the start of the story, and then becomes stronger than the villains/rivals who have been training their entire lives

Since my plot will take place over the course of just a couple years at most, I'm thinking of making a rule for myself where...

>Rate a character's "power" on a scale of 1-5 at the very beginning of the story
>Because of the relative short amount of time, that character will only be able to go up by 1 point.
>Characters from a lower number can outsmart, gang up on, or trick characters from a higher number but can't outright beat in a straight fight

I think this will make the progression of people's strength a lot more realistic, but I'm worried that if the main protagonists start at a 2, and I introduce a villain/rival that is a 5, then it might feel unrewarding that the protagonist can't accomplish that cathartic anime/movie moment where he dominates the rival through the power of hardwork/justice/friendship/etc.

If the villain does lose at any point it'll be through some sort of underhanded means.
>>
Idea:
>high seas pirate adventure
>peg legs and parrots and hook hands etc
>finding hidden treasures
>fighting other pirates and making daring escapes from the navy
>wooing damsels
>maybe a few supernatural elements
>but they're modern-day Somalian pirates

Whaddya think?

>>95173589
I think for something like that, it's better to focus on resources and situational advantages than giving characters intrinsic "power levels".

For instance, if the hero's power level is 2, and the villain's power level is 9 because of his disintegrator gun and his army of demon t-rexes, then first the hero gets the Sword of Legend so he's power 3 (whether there's a quest to find it or a training montage to master its power is up to you, so long as the hero has to work for the upgrade). Then they sneak into the villain's bedchamber, neutralizing the demon t-rexes, and then the hero's sidekick heroically sacrifices himself to drain the disintegrator gun of its battery, reducing the villain's power level to 4, which our underdog hero might just be able to beat.

(also, the cathartic moment where the hero dominates the rival with the power of friendship can still happen- friends mean you can gang up on the fucker)
>>
>>95173589
You have a point, though I like it when either the hero prevails because the villains have been lazy and relying on being-the-best and nobody else ever thought to challenge them, just ASSUMING they had also been training all this time
or when the hero legitimately is significantly outclassed, and wins by a mixture of luck and determination.... the first time. Then wisely realizes (or is taught by someone wiser) that that won't happen again, and needs to legitimately get stronger for next time.
>>
>>95173851
I like the idea of classical storybook pirates in a more realistic modern setting (kind of. it has the potential to get really dark when they have to start slaughtering people, and when bombs and bullets exist), not so much making them third worlders (the whole fun of the classical pirate is he's got all the charm of an aristocrat with all the down-home normalcy of a peasant thief). i DO think we need more black pirates, just because it's a look that works. really suits them. but... if I were you I'd make a brand new setting altogether, with some elements of real life but not all of them

>Hero defeats first villain with willpower and luck
>Hero knows it but he thinks he may be able to keep outsmarting it's way into heroics
>Next villain almost beats the hero to a pulp but then the previous villain comes and kicks his ass
>Hero accepts that he needs more training or else he won't be able to protect anybody
>First villain offers to become his trainer
>The story pretty much follows how the hero mixes the villain's training and his own smarts to defeat new villains
>The first villain remains in the villain category anyway but he and the hero become odd vitriolic best friends

Fund it
>>
>>95173983
It wouldn't be any darker than traditional pirate fiction, and just as romanticized - there's no reason a third world Somalian pirate can't be as charming as a 17th-century pirate (maybe his father was a high-up warlord who managed to get him an education in the west or something). The action scenes would be different from the usual age of sail stuff, but not necessarily more bloody - guns and bombs and cannons were already a thing back then, and a machete fight isn't really any more violent than a sword fight.
>>
>Comic about an ancient battle between a cult of chinese soul stealers and the monks who oppose them.
>Follows 4 highschool kids in America who were brought into the fight

Besides the main villains, I want to think of a good rival character/goal for each of the characters.

>Character 1 is a hot-headed ex-bully who began fighting with a boxing style but mixed in other striking styles like Muay Thai to help cover Boxing's obvious weaknesses in real fights.
>His major character flaws is his own pride and anger which get in the way of him also wanting to be a good person
>Rival is a super powerful, god-tier boxer that is the epitome of his anger, selfishness, and pride.
>Is a metaphor/parellel to what the character 1 would be like if he gave into his vices and never changed his ways

>Character 2 is a naturally talented kid with extreme reflexes and natural talent that likes to act like he's in an anime and go out of his way to present himself as cooler than he actually is
>His character flaws are that he relies on his natural abilities and never trains, and hides behind his anime personas because he actually lacks confidence in his "true" self
>Not strictly a rival but his character arc involves getting his ass kicked by character 1(who is diligent with his training) and his older sister(who is also powerful but is the epitome of real self-confidence) and an inner battle between his personas which gives him the motivation to shed his mental shackles

The next two don't really have a rival although I do have a vague character arc for them

>Don't have any real character flaws

>Character 4 begins as a depressed, unconfident nerd
>Trains in eastern martial arts focusing on inner-balance and spiritual wellness
>Overcomes his inner demons relatively early on and after expressing that fighting isn't really his thing he more-or-less drops out of the adventure

kinda weird that the girl character is seen from the same exact angle in every frame not to mention that she maintains same relative size in all frames. having every panel zoom in on the girls reactions makes it really hard to tell whats going on, also if you were going for something dynamic (which im assuming from the context) you should really try for more varied perspectives

Oh man, that's something I quite struggle with whenever I have to try drawing something new that's non-solid or incorporeal (i.e. Mist, rain, some type of magic...) the first time
This one was a particular pain in the ass, where I'm going back to edit two already-uploaded pages where the Arc Final Boss uses the Insta-Kill Eye

My MAIN restriction tends to concern the Chapter length, which is:
16 if it just follows Rich & Gwyn
18 if it involves more characters
22 if last arc of chapter
This is mainly to make sure my chapters don't last too long (I think 4 months is a decent time) and the fluff is cut out.
I have an other convoluted one on the max number of figures per panel (to prevent me from dragging myself characters by drawing to many figures in one page)

Yeah, we would if we weren't utter luddites. It is a thing we'd like to change in the future, as unless you're on either site you can't really comment. But we're inept in technical stuff. We'll figure it out eventually.

But anyway, yeah, this was the end of our second season of the Sisters. It didn't really go as intended, as things were hectic on my end as a writer and we ended up finding ourselves doing more to clean up old plot threads than to delve forward into new ones. It was a bit too much decompression at time, and we spent less time with Beatrice and more time with Beatrice & Guy/The Society; which is a shame because she was going through some stuff that would've been fun to dwell on by herself. Next arc for sure.

We're at about 540 pages into the Sisters, that has been shown. Which is a pretty decent investment of time and effort. I'm pretty happy with it, but there's always a lot of room for improvement and after how talky this season was I want more action/magic shit. The little interlude will give some of that fix, but we need to deliver it more as that stuff makes the other stuff worthwhile.

I was just laughing at that "where do the clothes go?" line, and i assumed all this time that, anytime transformy shiz happened, they either got shredded or oozed-out-of, so they should have still been there
it's not like i'm obsessed with this kind of thing or anything, not like even when i was 6 it bothered me whenever someone transformed on some cartoon and their clothes were fine..

sisters! good comic I just have a few questions , hope the first isn't to personal ,how's the profit end of things? end game? how did your writer find you?
>>
>>95179981
Chel is the sort who would comment on that, as it bothers her too. Was sort of a throw away line after I noticed the clothes never showed up in the other transformation sequences, and Conrad never had that issue (though he took of his clothes before he went monsterful).

Chel didn't get to do as much as we'd like this chapter. She was supposed to have been watching the snuff film Liam and Ava made back in the day and complaining about the effects when Jam went upstairs to talk to Sammy. Mostly to get across Chel is not really phased by things after a wall tried to murder her.

>>95180009
This is the writer.
Profit ends for the Sisters are borderline non-existent, but enough to keep the dropbox online. We managed to score an agent from the thing, so primarily we're doing pitchworks for potential money. So, we've got the makings of money; but not money proper yet. Not ideal, but we didn't really expect to make money off the Sisters. Stuff we've sold on the side has done adequately enough.

End game is to have this be our "we can do long form continuity work" that helps establish we can develop an IP and production bible stuff. Which sorta shits on artistic integrity, but we both know what we're good at. We're doing the Sisters for a lot of reasons, that, and we like Urban Fantasy and want to contribute something to the genre that isn't super off the rails.

We found each other because we both liked D&D/tg stuff and we both liked 4th Edition when it came out---mostly because it was new. He was an Eberron guy, I am a Dark Sun guy; but we hit it off talking game shit and comics stuff. I do have a formal degree in Creative Writing / English also criminology because I wanted employment... so we just work well together. We've found our groove, and we play to one another's strengths. We've been buds for about a decade now.

I mean, as someone who has done certain works before where I really wanted people to get invested in a narrative; having someone who isn't there for the same sorta meeting of the minds entertainment is a smidge disheartening. But at the same time, I'm just happy people read it. Maybe I wish they read it for other reasons beyond what I'm up to, because I sure am not any representation guru; but I'm happy they choose to read my work.

I dunno, it is a complex sort of thing that once again I likely wouldn't be feeling if I were a bit younger or didn't have a past of people reading my work due to requirements or bureaucratic nonsense rather than a real desire to indulge in my stuff. But I don't get to choose my audience, and at the end of the day we make this comic for ourselves first and foremost. We've yet to pander to anyone other than ourselves, and as such I can always find some comfort that maybe people who read our stuff for surface reasons end up reading it because they like the content.

>>95181120
>type of comic.
Yeah, that's sort of the weird part of doing something that vibes half towards slice-of-life. Honestly I think the downtime makes the action worthwhile, and most of it works. Some people really like the downtime stuff, others just want the gore and action. Sometimes we hit one audience with the other side of it. We could appeal more towards target demographics, but we kind of like how the world feels right now. In terms of realness. Months later, people are still dealing with the death of a friend and not wanting to admit his faults; most people just want to get by, and most badness remains at the fringe until it gets under the skin.

Honestly the next arc will be interesting to see by way of reception.

>>95180294

Cape books are really flexible on themes actually, it isn't a genre as much as it is a "well in this story there is a hero with superpowers and a costume".

The best advice I could give though is that you be careful with the worldbuilding. Worldbuilding is nice so you can have a coherent setting and all, but you can spend years on it trying to make it perfect instead of just having half of it set and the other half work it on the go while doing the actual comic.

Keep in mind that manga itself was heavily inspired by western comics
>>
True true, what i mean is which fan base is likely to be more receptive. I should have been more specific.
My art style is somewhere between western and manga, more cartoony than the average western comic yet more detailed than the average manga. I try to keep some of the appeal from both. With that in mind I'm pondering how I should label it based on how likely each fan group is to respond positively. But stylistically you could honestly label it as either.
>>
>>95183981
Post an example of your drawing skills so we can get a better idea
>>
>>95183981
It's not a good idea to worry that much about pleasing groups. No matter your motivation for doing so, that effort would be better spent on just making your comic as good as you can (sure it's easier to get appeal and response, but there's a reason that's easier. Easy come, easy go)
In any case though, if it's in-between, you're in good shape (though your description makes no sense. how can it be both more cartoony and more detailed? and I hope you aren't thinking in such simplistic terms as if those are what define those styles) because somewhere-in-between-the-two is the most popular by far

Ah, my bad.
A better way of saying it is my designs are more stylized than the average western comic and they have a clear manga influence.
Basically western proportions with a manga flair. Sorry if that's not a great description.
I'd post pics but I've only got access to my phone at the moment.

And good point about concerning myself with which groups I'm aiming for. Making something with high quality is the top priority .

It sounds like your heart's in the right place, so I say go for it.
I don't suppose any of your art is online in a place where we could easily search for it

You're dead on, my art style is somewhere between the realistic cape style and an ecchi/shonen style.
Currently I've got none of my good stuff online do to going on a long hiatus, needed some time to improve and I didn't want to post my many mistakes during that period.
I'm going to be doing a bunch of promo type pics, portfolio pieces is the term unless I'm mistaken, staring characters from the comic before I start posting the comic though.
I'll post them here when I can.
>>
>>95184561
hmm, I guess you're right, like it will have a ellipsis there instead, though I guess it can go either way.
For the layout, hmm, possible it might be because the fourth panel words bleed into the first panel, so I'll change that. Maybe I should move the first panel's dialog higher too.

The puzzle pieces are all coming together now. It's funny how similar a rank amateur and a very serious professional can sound. I can tell now you're the latter. Mad respect for that, but if the stick up your ass ever starts to feel uncomfortable, feel free to remove it while you're here. Not so much that you can relax and not worry about judgment, but just that the more seriously you take yourself the more you're a magnet for it.
>>95184647
It is an odd quirk of grammar that is currently somewhat in flux. Stating out loud that you have a question is still not the same as a question, but we're getting to the point that it's almost official to -drop- question marks in sentences that would otherwise be questions, if they're fully rhetorical and spoken with a downward inflection. Things like "he's right, isn't he."

but thanks! basically the porn comic will be about witch superheroes (since that's the writer's thing and mine put together) and it focuses on light hearted mind-break and submissive stuff (plus minor other elements).
There's no real story involved since we're sick of ten pages of exposition before sex, so ours only has a page of set-up or immediate sex.

It is. In the text story at http://www.capeworldcomics.com/comic/magical-woman-1/ its explained that magical girls started when Amaterasu was attacked by Pele as revenge for Pearl Harbor. The sun goddess bled over Japan and her blood in the form of red light gave several woman magic power that passes down from mother to daughter.

These new superhumans were first called taiyo shojo or "sun girls" to honor Amaterasu. The rest of the world simply called them magical girls because that was the most obvious thing about them and Japanese culture gradually absorbed the term as mahou shojo. In modern Japan the two terms are virtually interchangeable, although taiyo shojo has old-fashion connotations.

A magical girl from a few generations back is more likely to be called a taiyo shojo than a mahou shojo.

Some of the lettering could do with improvement. The space is there, the text just needs to fit into the space better.

P1, P5 & P6: rearrange the line breaks.
P3: coFfee
P4: Center the text block; nudge it down and right a few pixels.
P5: No crossbar-capital-i for "If"
P7: A more circular speechballoon would fit better than a vertical oval.
>>
Suggested text changes,etc:

>>95186455
P1 Dialogue 1: Insert a line break into "Finish off // that bitch."
P1 Dialogue 2: End with a double dash -- instead of an ellipsis to indicate speech that's suddenly interrupted. Ellipses are more of a slow pause than a sudden stop.

>>95186466
P10, linebreaks and grammar: "Well, well... // Did you think // you could ..."

>>95186485
P4 & 5: double dashes again to link the dialogue.

-----

>>95187139
>>95176326
One other thing I've just spotted: In panel 8 I'd have the speechballoon tail exit from the side, next to "brutal", and point to his mouth, rather than from the bottom and pointing to his shoulder.

-----

Lettering is just as much a part of the art in comics as the drawings themselves; great art can be let down by shoddy lettering. Spending a little more time getting it just right will improve things considerably.

Alright then. The world's story is veeeery long but the gist of it is that the world's two major superpowers ended a war in a stalemate. One is Ankberia, an autocratic/stratocratic empire inspired by Nazi Germany + Soviet Russia, the other is Darrazee, a republic where corporations have more power than the government: in the aforementioned conflict they gave war loans to those poor nations that needed support, unofficially turning them into debt slaves and controlling them indirectly through economic power. The two superpowers operate with the excuse of world peace but do it at the expense of the independence of the countries they conquer, whether they're open about it, such as in Ankberia's case, or not, like Darrazee. The two superpowers exploit the continent of West Talar in preparation of a second war for supremacy.

The world is the same size as Earth but is a little colder. It's also more geologically active and the eruption of two supervolcanoes plunged Rejka in a volcanic winter with the zones closest to these craters turned into ash wastelands. The world has 4 hybrid sapient species, all anthro. The technological level is that of the Old West.

I'll stop here or I'll go on forever. Here's one of the uniforms I mentioned for the time being

Other Pele.

She did not take kindly to Pearl Harbor and wanted revenge (which in this setting Amatersu participated in. Part of the lore is that the Imperial Japanese government manipulated the kami through lies, threats, and promises to create an army to rival the American superhero population)

They had a huge fight all across the Pacific. The ocean boiled, islands cracked, and in the end they both retreated to their homelands to lick their wounds.

I'm trying my best to make Capeworld's lore rival other superhero universes. There's tons of lore just behind Japan's taiyo shojo.

Talking more seriously though, it's all about execution. Tragic backstories and clear goals mean nothing if their personalities and behavior are bland.

Goals and backstories do not equate to likeable personalities, and personality is the main element that makes a character endearing and enduring. Try describing your characters making no reference to their occupations, backstories, or goals. Do this for both your major and minor character's, describe what they'd be like if they were just some guy you had a short conversation I'm the bus with, and see what your main characters are lacking.

The terms are both used in the setting, but taiyo shojo tends to be used to refer to older magical girls while mahou shojo refers to younger ones. It's sort of like the difference between Lady and Miss. They sort of mean the same thing but one is a little more formal than the other.

>>95190931
>I have to wonder how Pele felt about the US in general

In this timeline the Blount Report of 1893 didn't get to be ignored by the provisional government and overturned a year later. Instead several American pulp-era superheros acted on it and restored the monarchy.

Pele actually likes America because the superheros seemingly carried out the will of Grover Cleaveland's government.

It's just one of many ways superhumans altered the timeline in the Capeworld setting.

Another fun Capeworld fact: China never went full commie like it did in our timeline. It's local superhuman population of superhuman youxia kicked the communists out and they formed a tiny splinter nation called the People's Republic of China or PRC.

In our world the PRC under the one China policy is China and Taiwan is the splinter nation. In Capeworld China is China and PRC is the splinter nation.

whom do you think you're talking to?
>>
>>95193108
I don't think that's possible.

Bad stuff is easy to comment on; the worse it is, the easier it gets to provide useful advice regardless of genre - whether it's superheroes or teen drama or space opera, if the spelling's wrong or the anatomy is broken beyond belief, you can point out what's wrong and make suggestions how to fix it.

Decent-to-good stuff is much harder to talk about constructively, especially if it's of a genre you're not yourself into. Like, take >>95184221 for example. I can't give that any meaningful advice because I have little way to tell apart actual flaws in the anatomy and stylistic choices that will enhance the story for its target audience of twink-loving gayfags.

I guess I could post at every single page where I don't see any glaring flaws and go "yeah that's decent", but that's not really doing anything other than wasting time and bump limit.

Honestly though I see no problem with making the main characters the least interesting. It's tradition

"Decent investment"? That's what people who do webcomics full time produce in the amount of time your guys have been at it! I started mine some months before your and I've got around 130 pages done (and 21 pages left to the end of this arc), you guys have done an outstanding job

Spring, Summer, Winter
Spring, Summer, Fall
Winter, Spring, Summer

We've got nine, though we could end it at five. Five is the height of things, but the idea is that we'd end it with Jam going off to college and getting away from her family. Felt like a nice bookend to start her off very enthusiastic about learning magic and then end it on her trying to be happier with herself.

We think of our issues as episodes, so it helps with the flow of things. Generally eight-or-nine issues to a seasonal arc. Mostly they're sorted as arcs by who is in focus. First year is mostly on Erin, second year is more on Beatrice, last year is more on Jam; but you can see how that's more of a guiding mentality that practice. Erin's not so much the main character of the first two seasons, she's just the catalyst for a lot of the bad stuff.

>>95200193
We appreciate that. Posting four pages a week might help it feel like it flows quicker, or there's been less pages. We also produce by way of scenes, so each update feels generally self-contained.
>>
>>95201068
oh man, college Jam definitely sounds like a point where it would become a new series and gain a new title or something
>4 pages a week
that's what it is, I'm not thinking of each update as multi-page, even though it is.

Things get a little fan-service-y on this and part of the next page. But the black-haired character is being controlled in her sleep to steal things.

Each person controlled in their sleep is being shown something different. This character is kind of a pervert, and at least at the moment has a crush on the MC after she protected her from someone. So when she's being controlled, she sees a version of the MC, in a skimpier outfit both to appeal to the perverted one, and also so she has a different outfit in case the real and fake MC appear together in the future.

This is going to build to where the guy who controls people in their sleep is a major villain. But in this part, it's the one old guy, his cyborg daughter and his secretary trying to set a trap for a thief who is stealing things- and this character being controlled to defeat the trap.

Oh man, now I REALLY have to get back into this, then. I first I thought it was going to be more of a trilogy; Chapter 1 to the one called "The Truth" being the first "book".

Still, I find it insane that Peter manages to draw 4 pages a week while ALSO making some of the best looking pages in /hyw/. I don't know if I've mentioned it before, but I also appreciate how the comic isn't too decompressed; looking back at old chapters, each update moves the story significantly forward, feeling more like a self-contained "scene" from a TV drama rather than something which requires the context of what came directly before and what'll come directly after in order to make sense

Many webcomic artists I think work with the idea of a published comic issue or chapter from a manga magazine in mind (i.e. what matters is the final product) without thinking that the reader often has to wait seven days for the next page.

I ->try<- to do that same; not always successfully, but The Sisters is a perfect example of each update standing on it's own. If anything I need a proofreader to help me avoid dumb shit I regret putting in the comic a month after the page is up on the site

yes, it's called drawing backgrounds.
in all seriousness look up perspective made easy, do all of the exercises and start drawing the scenery around you. draw your room, your kitchen, the view outside your window, your local park, and whatever else you can think of. as you start to get a better feel for things, start constructing scenes from imagination, applying what you've learned and observed. you improve at drawing backgrounds by drawing backgrounds, so get to it

Terrible idea, dozens of chapters of random side characters having fights of little to no consequence to the over-arching story is one of the worst aspects of Bleach. The worst offenders are probably the final stage of hueco mundo and that fight for the pillar things at the beginning of the Aizen battle.
Now Bleach is a battle comic but I don't think this method would work well with any genre except maybe comedy or gag Comics.
If you're at a point where you can't write anything but this, you should just go on hiatus instead. Kubo, Kishi and to a lesser extent Oda (and pretty much any WSJ battle manga) have lots of crappy quasi-filler because of creative methods like that. It's the shedule. To illustrate: this is why hxh puts everyhting in current WSJ to shame - when you spend 3/4 of a year in hiatus, you have enough time ti develop your storry without having to resort to cheap trick to combat writer's blocks.
>>
>>95234569
Well, post SS, Bleach just kept getting worse and worse as new characters were introduced, so I'd advise against it.

Plus, you can't have a large cast in a webcomic unless you update 3-4 times a week. Else you either don't give most of them them enough screen time, or you have a huge cast of shallow character
>>
>>95235587
Shallow but likable characters are good if you have a big fanbase who fill in the blanks themselves. More fan art means more readers
I mean most of the trolls in homestuck are shallow but suddenly Eridan wears drag sometimes
>>
>>95233771
Awesome.

I think you explained once that most of your short comics are conected somehow but you really ought to do a consecutive story, ongoing or at least a dozen chapters or so. You have incredible potential.
>>
>>95235539

>>
>>95235637
Again, HS updated multiple times a DAY, and the author already had four very long "Acts" involving only four characters behind the story.

Plus, as someone else pointed out, you're choosing to get writing advice from the only "Big 3" who had his manga cancelled because it kept going down in sales. Kubo treated his manga like some sort of fighting game series where you just want to see what new character they add in the next installment. Oda had an actual ADVENTURE going on, character with a proactive goal (Find OP, defeat Mihawk, draw map of the world, etc...) while Ichigo's was reactive (Gotta protect my friends!)

Also lastly, you're not Andrew Hussie. Say whatever you want about HS, but Hussie is a writer with some years of experience and HS is a fairly complex story to pull off. You, I'm going to guess, probably haven't written/drawn much besides a couple of short stories (feel free to prove me wrong)
>>
>>95235954
>he wanted to be a fashion designer
just look at his dyed hair, corny shades, and tight shirts. he doesn't want to be with the mangaka crowd, he wants naive aspiring models that he can take to the backroom and "draw". not dirty fujoshi pestering him about the intricacies of the relationship between whatever gay couple they ship.

ONE managed to make OPM have lots of characters and be successful. Sure it started with Saitama and Genos just fighting the next monster of the week, but then it shortly became about lots of different characters who build up to Saitama
Series that juggle between dozens of characters aren't so uncommon that no one can aspire to do it

What's important though is if the fights matter at least to the characters fighting or at the very least be interesting. With Bleach during the fake karakura town arc and Naruto during the great war arc the characters fighting could have been doing it with someone else and it would have mattered just as much and the choreography is phoned in
You can have supporting characters fight each other, but you can't have to many of them fight. Over saturation never works. These detour battles did work in the earlier arcs of bleach and has worked in other series but when we're seeing an episode of the 5th seat of the 11th division fight the 20th strongest enemy who can care?
There's also that the pacing of these episodes suck to because they dont want to catch up with the manga

My bad. I haven't browsed pixiv without an account in over a decade so I had forgotten how impossible it is to navigate without one.

I'm still trying to figure out what to do about hosting an actual web comic. This isn't that though, this was done for a contest which is why it's not as spread out across all 8 of my social media accounts like some of the other stuff is. But it's good to know what to link people to and what not to link people to.

I'll take wordpress under advisement.

What about this link: https://bridgefirecomics.deviantart.com/gallery/60429275/AATR4-Comic

Can you reach it there?

Used the link on your dA to actually get to your pixiv to read it (honestly would have dropped it because of the insane amount of work it requires to read a comic on dA) the premise is quite interesting, if a bit narrow in the scope of the people who can relate. What about uploading the rest of the chapters to pixiv? Only seeing chapter 1 (which is split into two parts? pixiv album image limit?)

After doublechecking I found the rest in your illustrations tab, whilst the first chapter is under manga. Very weird. Can't fathom why pixiv won't let me stay at maxres either, so it's not like dA is the only lazy website.

You thought about entering the currently running shounen jump universal manga contest? Basically submit an oneshot in any language to have it judged and evaluated by some publishers at Shounen Jump, any language even.
>>
>>95242814
"Any language" had a bit of a brainfart there, only the supported languages. English is of course accepted. It will be automatically translated into JP by the MediBang staff for judging.
>>
>>95242814
I thought about it. However, I wouldn't attempt to enter something like that unless I had some intention of trying to win. And with my current job I absolutely cannot commit to serialization in Shounen Jump. Unless by that they mean they're just going to print the one-shot in Jump. Which would be cool (but not what I think of when I think serialization.) I definitely might try for a future one. I have a few ideas for One Shots that might appeal to the Jump crowd.

Preview of a text+comic story I'm planning down the road. What do you guys think?

They didn’t think Ned Kelly was real, not at first.

The police were warned. People smelled the smoke, heard the hammer, saw the armor.

They didn’t believe them. A man made himself a homemade suit of armor like something out of King Arthur to protect himself while he robbed people in broad daylight? It was too strange. It was too fantastic. It was too fantastic for 1880. There were electric lights, steam ships, aetheric generators, and spirit cabinets in 1880. But Ned Kelly was too fantastic even for an increasingly fantastic world.

And then it happened. And when it happened and their bullets bounced off his armor like pebbles they said Ned Kelly was the Devil, or a bunyip, or a ghost. Those things were more believable than Ned Kelly and his armor.

And that is why we do it. People think the little boring patterns they run their lives by constitute reality. They run up against someone stronger than they are they act like the world’s crashing down. Someone tells them to get on the ground they scream for the planet-moving superheros to come save them. They will call you sir. They will cry. They will beg for their lives.

And all you are is a man with a little more power than them. All you are is a man in a tin can who did something unexpected.

But to them you’re the Devil himself.

That is why we do it.
>>
>>95248327
Note: "Kellyman" is an Australian term for anyone wearing powered armor be they superhero or supervillian. The term comes from the infamous Ned Kelly.

>>
where's the "how's your cartoon going" thread?
>>
>>95251304
I honestly wasn't basing that image on that picture.

I can tell you exactly how it happened. Once I realized the pattern brush meant that I could regulate the size of the paper dolls based on pen pressure, the first thing I did was start layering from small to large to create perspective.

In the process of doing that, the idea of the vortex just seemed obvious. And if you'd read the story, based on how it ends, you'd know why it was an obvious choice.

I'm not saying that to get you to read it. I'm saying that because whoever that artist is, he didn't invent the idea of a vortex. It's not a stretch that someone could come to that same conclusion on their own.

If it were an homage. I'd just say that. I don't have any problems referencing other art culture in my work. I don't believe it's a crime or anything like that.
>>
>>95251153

This is the prologue to the next part. If you're referencing the original story itself, then how THAT ends is sort of a beginning.

To be honest that is the 4th part of an ongoing story. But I don't have any expectation that people would try to read the whole thing. You'd only know about parts 1-3 if you were either involved in those tournaments, have been following me this whole time, or stumbled upon links to them in my gallery.

But let it suffice to say, this is the "prologue" to Part V. Although really it's just me messing with the designs in comic form. There will be a more appropriate prologue that actually has some narrative structure incoming soon.
>>
>>95250839
I've never seen that image before. It looks like it could have been an illustration in Dante's Inferno.

You're not wrong.

It's honestly never occured to me to sit down and re-post all of my comics on one readable platform.

That's partially because I sucked until recently where I've reached a point where I don't hate my art as much.

And partially because a lot of these stories are for contests that I didn't win. So they don't have endings. I-IV are unique in that I've returned to that contest and was able to link an ongoing narrative even through all the defeat. But the last one that I finished (and won) would not be acceptable art or story-wise.

My second closest one isn't bad but I never wrote the ending for that one. Still haunts me to this day. Pic related. (And I can barely stand to look at it art-wise. Panelings not so bad though.

late night bump, but a bump with a question

Maybe it's a dumb thing to ask but is correct to say "this guy will kill me from the bile"? The context is the guy in question being really careless so the other one pretty much "sheds the bile". I'm not entirely sure what "sheds the bile" means in your language, but in English, "bile" refers to really angry and hateful words, usually paired with the verb "spewing"*.
So "I think I might drown from the bile this guy is spewing" or something similar might make sense if the guy in question is being really rude towards the person making the statement.

Could you explain what the expression in your language means? There might be a better translation than a direct one.

*"to spew" is when you cast something out in great amounts and getting it all over; used literally of vomit, lava, and geysers, used figuratively of insults, hate, etc.

I second this anon, it really depends on context in your language for the individual words used.

"bile" can either be angry or hurtful words or literally the shit soup in your intestines.

What is the character being careless about?

If the character is concerned about getting into trouble the phrases we would use would be like:

This guy'll kill me for this shit.
This shit will get me killed.
I'm fucked.

It really hinges on how your using the words "shed" and "bile."

It'd be next to impossible to argue for this Statement convincingly.
If you look at art from a historic Point of view there's plenty of examples of artists coming up with similar ideas, composition and even concrete Images completely separated through time and space.
The Image in question is not specific enough to proof the "fake" as such by simple comparison. Maybe that anon has seen the Image before, maybe he hasn't. There's simply no way you can know.
Now, if that anon had come up with say the Image of a crime fighter detective dressed as a bat and a bird-themed sidekick it'd be fair to say that everything you said applies.

Nah, fuck that. Healthy artistic progress relies on a balance of focused study, working on more results-oriented stuff like drawing a comic, and just plain fucking around with a pencil for funsies.
Just drawing comics will make you plateau, just doing studies will leave you directionless and never starting your comic, and just fucking around 24/7 will give you tons of ideas but without the ability to express them.

>>95262885

Regardless of whether you recall seeing that specific piece, the similarities are so apparent that you clearly pulled either from it or other works that have either homaged or reused it, subconsciously or not.

You just look like an ass claiming that you can't steal via cultural osmosis. It's not uncommon. An "Oh, my bad." or "I didn't mean to do that." would suffice, but instead you're acting as if what you have clearly done is impossible to do.

Given that technically only one thing is in common, I think it's more than plausible it was a coincidence. True a vortex of flying things seems similar, but it doesn't have two people standing on a rock in the foreground, it has a guy, hands outstretched, in the midst of it (this itself is something we've seen before in other things, it's the common way to draw "oh man all this stuff i'm involved with is all around me" )
if he was on a rock, with the cutie shapeshifter, in the foreground, and there was some kind of glowy object in the center, then it would be too much to believe it was a coincidence.

I see, so it really changes a lot between languages.

In mine, the expressions of the bile are related to the organ/some liquid the liver makes and that gets done in excess when you get really angry, so we use the expression "derramar bilis/hacer bilis" (which kinda translates literally as "shed the bile/make bile") for when someone makes us really angry or stresses us a lot.
>>
>>95262522
When it gets cringe worthy and not in a funny way
>>
>>95266571
Cont. (sorry clicked post before adding the scene context)

So the context is pretty mcuh guy A is always reckless and throws himself into danger to save others, and guy B is always getting stressed and angry over it, with the last case being really extreme on how lucky guy A managed to survive. That's when the expression comes, because guy B complains about guy A stressing him too much to the point of dying.

And you look like an enormous tool for getting so worked up over someone drawing "Person standing in whirlpool of objects", as if that's such a completely one in a billion concept that it is absolutely INCONCEIVABLE for anyone else to design a similar composition. Just look at the Dennis the Menace fiasco. Two artists in two completely separate parts of the world happened to have the same idea at around the same time to design a rascal young boy who's name snappily rhymes with "menace". According to your logic, coincidences are impossible and everything is an act of plagiarism.

Fuck off, man. Honestly.
>>
>>95266571
>>95266678
Oh, I see. A similar expression that works better in English would be B complaining about A giving him dangerously high blood pressure or putting him in danger of a heart attack.
>>
>>95266496
Just stop, Anon.
Giving (You) the benefit of the doubt, I get what you're trying to do but you chose the wrong example to cling to.
Had you given other examples of his work that were derivative that's another thing but you just latched onto this hilariously simple concept. If you continue this charade you're clearly baiting.
>>
>>95266738
>getting so worked up
Where?
I just butted into the conversation because what he's saying is dumb. People pull from sources they haven't actually seen plenty, there's nothing wrong with that. There's no need to act like you're immune to copying things second, third, fourth, etc-hand.

>Two people came up with a broad idea based on wordplay.
Yeah, that's a coincidence. Pretty different from using one of the most common and referenced compositions in modern art. Stargate did it. Shin Megami Tensei did it. There's so much media that does it that it's pretty much impossible not to get a secondhand version of it. That's why this is such a silly claim to make. It's like saying "No I wasn't influenced by the Pieta I just drew a person draped over someone's arms in the same fashion." Even if you've never seen the Pieta, you're likely to reference it. It's that ubiquitous.

>plagiarism
I thought I made it pretty clear both times I've posted so far that I'm criticizing what he said, not what he did. There's nothing wrong with references and influences in your art, especially to the classics. Pretending you came up with stuff this famous and often recycled in a void, however, is fucking ludicrous.
>>
>>95266929
My computer's on/off button shamelessly plagiarized that SAME composition! ((((they)))) must be stopped!
>>
>>95266920
Again, you're going "I don't agree so this is bait, drop the act bub!" instead of actually discussing things. And I think you're conflating my point with the rambling of the anon who started this garbage reply chain.

I'm not making some kind of point, or calling him derivative, or criticizing his work, or whatever the fuck else. I mean exactly what I said: "I didn't see it so I couldn't have pulled from it" is bull. We constantly pull from famous works, regardless of intent, and indirect influence is common. That's just part of making art.
>>
>>95267083
Ah, I see you've resorted to erecting a straw man instead of just saying you disagree and attacking whether a similarity exists rather than the actual point of contention. Really hope you aren't the artist.

Even humoring that, there's quite a bit more similarity in thousands of bodies making a circle leading directly to the center, where only whiteness remains, than a single line circle and one large line nearly bisecting it. You could argue that there was some influence there, but thats a matter of personal opinion. I don't think so, but what about you?
>>
>>95267083
Why is your computer upside down?
>>
>>95266862
Oh yeah that works well too, thanks anon!
>>
>>95265698
I'm not sure on what to settle yet, that's why I asked for suggestions in general.
A backstory, an education, a name, taste in food; as long as it's important for the character and I can meme the Axis in there.

a better example here would be accusing something of being T2's ending just because it's a dramatic lowering into a vat whatsoever.
cultural osmosis is certainly a thing, but this painting is relatively obscure. it's not as if he's doing Pieta. everyone does Pieta and few know it's a reference

/co I failed out of uni. Should I follow my dream of making comics or reroll?
>>
>>95154898
So I want to do a webcomic that's a fanfiction so I can mostly focus on practicing.

Good or bad idea?
>>
>>95269199
Depends. How many pages is it?
>>
>>95269222
The story itself is pretty long.
>>

It's ok I guess

>>
>>95269371
Why?
>>
>>95269248
Yeah but how many pages? How long does it take you to draw a page? How many hundreds of hours are you going to have spent on it when it's finished?
>>
>>95268555
What uni?
>>
>>95269656
Not in the US. But I was studying bio.
>>
>>95269699
If you passed the math parts of your Courses you'll be fine.
But don't try to make a living with webcomics, it's imossible.

A: a tablet PC can't do what a Cintiq or similar can do - it lacks features like pressure sensitivity and tilt, so it's little better than just drawing with a mouse.

B: Whether it has a screen or not, you're gonna need to plug a proper art tablet into a pc - it's not a separate device, it's an input device like a mouse or keyboard.

C: You're not gonna find a proper tablet that lets you draw directly on a screen for less than several hundred dollars. The cheapest I found was $449, but I only spent a few minutes and maybe you can find an older model or one with a bit of mileage - I don't know about tablets with built-in screens, but the one I've got has worked near-flawlessly* for nearly a decade now.

D: A lot of people don't feel like drawing directly on a screen is that big of a deal; it just takes some getting used to. (personally, I really like that my hand never covers up the thing that I'm drawing.)
