The first Toffee appearances were brilliant because he was so much different than Ludo.

Star is a child. Ludo is a threat to her, but a playful, ineffective one. Marco literally arranges a Ludo attack to cheer her up. Ludo is, at best, a playmate for Star, and at worst a toy. He doesn't challenge her at all.

Toffee is different. With his slick suit and somber attitude, his careful mechanations and no nonsense demeanor, Toffe saunters onto the scene and within instants takes control of the entire situation.

Toffee is an adult. When Star tries to take him on headfirst like she did Ludo, she gets stomped and only advances Toffee's plan.

The big disservice, then, was how Toffee was dispatched. Toffee should have been a wake up call for Star, a sign that she needed to grow up and mature too if she wanted an hope of matching him,

But nope, she just has to Star Harder than ever before and win without any technique or strategy. Instead of rising to the challenge of Toffee, she doubles down, and the show rewards her for her staticness.

The writers are what went wrong. Battle for Mewni felt like a cheap attempt at trying to gain hype for the show. Having a movie focused on Star fighting Toffee then filling it with pointless shit after moon the undaunted until the end was fucking dumb. I really hope this show doesn't peak at season 2 because all of that was great.

I guess that is fair, but while season 1 was mostly meh with a few hits, season 2 was mostly hits with a few misses. From the 7 episodes we've gotten from S3 they've followed the S1 ratio more. I did really like the first two and last episodes, so I guess we'll just have to wait for the rest.

Dunno if this is an unpopular opinion but the tapestry being a ridiculous embellishment was a great decision re: Moon and the setting in general. The execution of the flashback itself was more iffy, but the right idea was there.

Toffee ended up dying pretty much as I'd expected he would; no complaints there. The difference is I thought that'd be a season-finale thing instead of almost exactly the halfway point. For me, the biggest disappointment about him is that they didn't make enough use of him overall-- and I don't just mean BfM, but S2 as well. It's fucking surreal to see the S1 episodes where Toffee actually has multiple lines and interacts with other characters; only his very last appearance really came close to that.

I find Toffee's death being the catalyst for Eclipsa's freedom kind of a too-convenient setup, would've liked to see them interact, but I guess how that works out depends on what they do with Eclipsa. Still wondering if a connection between them is dumb fan speculation or really a thing-- I keep waiting for it to be disproven but we know almost nothing.

I guess really my only issue was he simply wasn't used enough, but his actual plan and defeat played out pretty damn close to what I'd expected, like, back in S1-- character stayed consistent even if it felt like from S2 on they started writing him as slightly more of an overt edgelord, and the tension/drama around him was played well.

There was a time when it looked like they'd play his past tragically but that was never a given, though even I was expecting it once. I'm kinda glad they ended up not getting sappy, but while they didn't portray him in the past as LOL I'M EVIL it seems they could have done more with him as General than they did, ex. how would he have defined his motivation then...another example of not doing enough. Though anyone expecting redemption or innocence was delusional; suicide-bombing Ludo's castle and everyone inside was already signing his death warrant.

It feels like a lot of the reactions about the direction of the plot come off that way. It's only clear in retrospect but Battle for Mewni seemed to be how they'd originally planned to end the second season, and if those episodes would have aired immediately after the February bomb, as in the same week, maybe there wouldn't be as many negative reactions to stuff like Toffee death.

It's a season finale plotwise but placed at the beginning of a season, and so the months in between with no idea of that may have caused fans to expect all of 3 to be Star vs. Toffee, while beating the villain is more expected at a season's end.

Also I'm not referring to fans thinking individual episodes sucked or that certain things weren't executed well; that's a different issue that has nothing to do with the when the episodes aired. I mean more people being mad/surprised at the most basic idea of the episodes' plotline itself.

No, he definitely is a Magneto type character. While Xavier is trying to convince the world to stop fearing mutants, Magneto's busy setting mutant rights back hundreds of years by committing random acts of terrorism. We saw that in the episode, where the mewmans and monsters are trying to set up a peace treaty while you've got an army of monsters outside screaming about how they're going to kill all mewmans. Both Toffee and Magneto had a point, but their attempts at fixing shit do nothing but make things worse for the people they're fighting for.

I think he'll still show up in flashbacks. Maybe to explain why getting his finger back was such a big deal to him, or to show why he rebelled against the monster king and how he managed to persuade other monsters to do so. Real talk, though, everything about the show paints Mewmans, as a race, as massive assholes towards monsters. There are some villains on the monster side (like Toffee) and some good people on the Mewman side (like Star), but the factions as a whole are laid out pretty clearly. The Mewmans are shitters who stole from the monsters.

So if what you mean to say is taken to be truth, you may also assume that the only natural path for the show to take is to either

A: Make Eclipsa into a sympathetic character and the arbiter of the Mewman Monster conflict

B: Show that both sides have done things in the name of their kind that was deplorable and thus they come to a consensus and join together against a greater evil (You can argue this already happened, considering that Buff Frog helped Moon and Marco get to Star, indirectly helping her get resurrected and defeat Toffee)

C: Absolutely blow the underlying themes she's been laying down to some overarching holier than thous message about not judging a book by its cover and dropping the ball hardcore

Choice C makes me cry, just thinking about Nefcy blowing the opportunity to make this a more serious show would be a huge bummer.

The only problem I have with this movie is that its just so damn hard for them to do serious stuff given the tone. And its hard to be serious without at least acknowledging the stuff that came before. Even a slight nod would help alleviate the gripes people had. If Marco had mentioned the confession, even if Star said "We'll talk later", it'd have been more believable.

There are a couple moments like these during the serious parts of this show where it being a kid's show serves it poorly. They just can't afford to do it as dark as they want to. But maybe Disney will let them do whatever the fuck they want in the next two seasons. Considering the season just started and we watched the main character melt the fucking face off the big bad. Tell me you thought that was happening after watching the first episode.

Either way, we'll know in a couple months.

Seeing this discussion about the Mewman-Monster conflict made me wonder if we'll get some answers about the wand or why the Queens are magic in the first place.

Star's version of the events made it seem like the Mewmans were going to get wrecked by the monsters until the Queen saved them. I think this kind of implies the Mewmans didn't have magic when they first invaded (maybe it was a sneak attack or defenses were low or a weak tribe lived there) but the Mewmans somehow got magic before the monsters could retaliate in larger numbers.

Did Glossaryck give this power to the Mewmans? Why?

Obviously shipping is THE thing for fans but the characters had so much more going on it would've felt stupid, like all the show really cares about is high school drama after all.

It's a good question. Odds are Marco will put a lot of distance between himself and Jackie, her being happy to have said distance.

How Star and Jackie would interact is certainly worth pondering. Star I imagine would try to keep things friendly, whilst being awkward in the process. Jackie's response to this is beyond me however.

Given how she reacted to Star's crush reveal, I'm getting this feeling she'd either try to awkwardly go along with Star attempts to be friendish, though ultimately both of them know it's not gonna work out in the end, or It's quite possible that Jackie might become openly hostile to Star, combining the angst of being #2 with the self loathing that comes from knowing she never stood a chance in the first place.
