>"Lucasfilm and Colin Trevorrow have mutually chosen to part ways on Star Wars: Episode IX. Colin has been a wonderful collaborator throughout the development process but we have all come to the conclusion that our visions for the project differ. We wish Colin the best and will be sharing more information about the film soon," read a Lucasfilm statement.

>Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that script issues have continued to be an issue during Episode IX’s development, with Trevorrow having had repeated stabs at multiple drafts. In August, Jack Thorne, the British scribe who wrote the upcoming Julia Roberts-Jacob Tremblay movie Wonder, was tapped to work on the script.

>Sources say that the working relationship between Trevorrow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy became unmanageable. Kennedy, who had already been through one director firing/replacement on the Han Solo spinoff movie, was not eager for a sequel and tried to avoid this decision.

Sounds like it's a good thing he's gone.

Nothing about Trevorrow's career to this point gives any indication that he can handle a Star Wars movie. It would also be a handy explanation for why he's able to outfit the First Order so excessively, rather than handwaving it with an "Unknown Regions lol" bullshit excuse.

I'm really really really fucking hoping that IX redeems the ST. Let's think of some shit we wanna see in the new movie?
-more focus on Kylo, so much pottery potential there
-less focus on Finn or Rey, stories aren't very interesting unless they do them well this time, otherwise I don't really care
-Something that's actually interesting and not just a big plot twist that happens with Luke
-They trash all the designs for the FO shit right now and redo them other than Kylo's suit

Anon, Rey is the main character of the sequel trilogy. Let me repeat that with more emphasis: REY IS THE MAIN CHARACTER OF THE SEQUEL TRILOGY. You will not be getting less focus on Rey. Not in a million years. Focus on her is going to increase, if anything.

Is the Death Star fueled by Kyber Crystals or does it simply use Kyber crystals? It seems odd that it would take so long just to get the amount of crystals necessary for a single shot but expect the Death Star to hold the entire galaxy hostage with the threat of limitless shots.
>>
I won't repost things from last thread that chronologically appeared before TCW (TPM and AOTC), so here goes.

The Republic Escape Pod (reused in Star Wars Rebels) doesn't look quite as good as the escape pod launched from the Tantive IV in ANH, but it does look quite a bit roomier inside.

Possibly the least original design in all of Star Wars, the Droch class boarding vessel has been seen almost without any change whatsoever in damn near every scifi franchise since the 1920s. Starships that drill and bore into other ships are a very ancient trope.

The Venator class Star Destroyer is one of the most beautiful ships in all of canon, absolutely perfect design, wholly original while retaining the basic Star Destroyer shape and design philosophy, echoing the Executor with the "tail," and having the novel and exciting carrier function where the deck opens up to disgorge its fighter complement. Fantastic design, easily within my top 5 favorite ships in all of Star Wars.

I dunno, she let Gareth Edwards (a fairly unconventional filmmaker) make a movie based on the pitch of a special effects guy at ILM where he ends up killing off the entire main cast.

Even if thats the biggest risk she ends up taking for all the movies up until 2020, it was still a pretty damn big one and it paid off. She even talked at Celebration about how it was so exciting to see risks pay off with Rogue One, and she looks forward to encouraging some more unconventional and shocking stuff in the future.

If anything, Rogue One made her realize that she fucked up with her safer L&M/Trevorrow picks. I also think she is very aware that people were unhappy with how safe TFA was, pretty much the only praise she has left for that movie was about having a "strong female lead".

So then L&M end up turning Han Solo (Lucas's own movie pitch he had been sitting on for over a decade) into a fucking joke, and Trevorrow was proving to be a hack who was probably going to be an even worse JJ for the final ST movie, and she had to take action.

Not saying I like Kennedy or anything, but I am saying that I am glad these directors are getting the axe. We need more people like Filoni and Edwards making the creative decisions, and less people like Abrams. And I think she is aware of what the fans want now too.

This. The only worry now is who they'll get to replace him as director. Trevorrow was kind of an unproven quantity- he'd made exactly one movie before JW and it's clear the only reason he was hired was because JW made a gajillion dollars. Now we just wait to see if Kennedy replaces him with another new guy who's only hot because of one high-grossing movie, or if she pulls a Solo and replaces him with a more experienced director with a proven track record.

We only have leaks from (((inside sources))) but supposedly they were pushing Alden to improvise, as well as adding tons of immersion-breaking quips and jokes into the script. Apparently Alden himself complained, and they took it to Kasdan, who took it to Kennedy. Kennedy sat down to watch some test footage, and was shocked at all the forced comedy, and the fact that the action scenes were so weak that they were embarrassing compared to Rogue One.

All the reports indicate that they were encouraging too much ad-libbing and both Kasdan and Ehrenreich were uncomfortable with it. Yub Nub is great, but Victory Celebration is hands down the best change in the SE
>>
>>95135635
That's similar to the story I heard, except the immersion-breaking jokes and weak action scenes.

What I heard though was that Alden complained about the improve, which got back to Kasdan, who throw a fit because they weren't filming his script as written (which just make him more of a tosser in my opinion) and then he complained to Kennedy, who sided with the wanker.

Rian and Gareth have talked about how this is bullshit though.

They both worked with Lucasfilm and were given tremendous freedom for their movies. Gareth even mentioned being surprised when Kennedy said he could kill everybody.

And we all know about fucking JJ seemingly getting freedom OVER Lucasfilm for the first movie.

I don't know how it is over at the MCU, but the first three Disney Star Wars movies all seemed to have a lot of freedom for their directors. It's only after L&M went full retard and got people complaining did Kennedy have to put her foot down. And Kennedy is head of Lucasfilm, so this isn't some nameless Disney executive neither.

I don't know about all that, but it did seem like they were going with directors that were fresh and up-and-coming, but so far in two cases it turned out they really weren't up to the task (well three, we're all forgetting about Trank). But as others have pointed out, Kennedy seems to be aware that this wasn't the most solid decision since she replaced one of the fresh-faced directing team with Ron fucking Howard. I'd actually say that Miller and Lord are probably the most experience after Rian and that fuck Abrams.
I mean they started with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, which was what brought them to peoples attention. Then they did 21 Jump Street, Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street, all of which did good in both box office and critical reception. As well as writing and producing a bunch of other stuff.

As for Trank, Edwards and Trevorrow?
Well Trank made Chronicle, then started on Fantastic Four. And then before he'd finished that he was attached to Star Wars
Edwards made Monsters then Godzilla, then was brought into Star Wars
And Trevorrow made a movie about an old internet meme, then Jurassic World, then Star Wars.

Rough outline of Michael Arndt's first draft for THE FORCE AWAKENS. Interesting to see what could have been.

>The Resistence led by General Leia Organa is at war against the First Order. Both sides have their own superweapons: The Resistence has the warship Warhammer, and the First Order has the Doomstar Base, capable of destroying stars.

>Kira, a hotheaded scavenger who lives on planet Jakku with her surrogate father, a former Rebel pilot, finds a map in the sunken remains of the Death Star, leading to an ancient Jedi temple foretold to hold great power. She then becomes a target of the Jedi Killer, a member of the First Order who uses artifacts to maintain an artificial connection to the Force, and kills Kira's mentor.

>Meanwhile, Stormtrooper Sam grows desillusioned with the First Order after witnessing the execution of a Rebel squad and forms an alliance with John Doe, a captive bounty hunter employed by Leia to find the map. The two escape to Jakku. Doe dies, while Sam is rescued and revived by shaman Maz Kanata.

>Kira and Sam cross paths and are rescued from the Jedi Killer by Luke Skywalker, who has been following the Jedi Killer to avenge the deaths of his students. Luke leads the pair to "Crime City" so Han Solo can lead them to Leia. Kira and Sam find out that the Jedi Killer is Han and Leia's son, who was corrupted by the sorceress Uber, leader of the First Order.

>The Jedi Killer retrieves the map and kidnaps Kira, who is strong with the Force. Luke, Han and Sam then join the Resistance on an assault on the Doomstar Base, which Han sacrifices himself to destroy, leaving the Millennium Falcon to Sam. Meanwhile, Luke and Kira defeat the Jedi Killer, who flees to reunite with Uber. The heroes then split up, with Kira leaving to train with Luke and uncover the secrets of the Ancient Power, while Sam joins the Resistance as they prepare to strike back against the First Order.

>Brad Bird and Matthew Vaughn were reportedly approached to direct the movie before J.J. Abrams was selected.

>Elizabeth Olsen was approached for Rey, but couldn't commit due to scheduling conflicts with AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. Saoirse Ronan and Shailene Woodley were also considered before Abrams cast Daisy Ridley.

>Alex Pettyfer, Ed Speelers, Matthew James Thomas, Jack O'Connell, Jesse Plemons, Dayo Okeniyi and Ray Fisher auditioned for Finn before John Boyega was cast.

>Chiwetel Ejiofor, James McAvoy and Joel Edgerton were considered for Poe Dameron before Oscar Isaac was cast. Early drafts featured him as a bounty hunter and later a Jedi warrior before he was made into an ace pilot.

>Poe would originally die in the TIE Fighter crash, but Abrams changed his mind after meeting Isaac. The character was named "John Doe" in early drafts.

>Lee Pace and Eddie Redmayne auditioned for Kylo Ren. Michael Fassbender was also linked to the role early into production.

Old Republic on the other hand has lots of potential since he could basically just do anything without getting in anyone's way, and there's tons of Legends shit to use as basis.

This was the biggest problem. If they wanted Poe to live past the crash then they should have made him an actual character and not just a side character. Poe should have been with Rey and Finn from the beginning. Would have been far more believable and a hell of a lot cooler if Poe would have been the one flying the Falcon on Jakku instead of Rey. Plus, seeing interactions between Poe and Han would have been fun since Poe knows who Han is and probably what he is like since Poe works closely with Leia.

>How similar is Jurassic World to Jurassic Park

Both films are about a theme park with resurrected dinosaurs. In both, something allows the dinosaurs to break lose, and the main characters have to find a way to safety.

In Jurassic Park, the power is shut down by Nedry as part of a plan to steal embryos for a rival company. Chaos ensues as the Tyrannosaurus and multiple Velociraptors escape and wreak havoc.

In Jurassic World, their genetically-engineered new dinosaur the Indominus Rex breaks loose using the natural abilities it was engineered to have, and it wreaks havoc as it goes from the secure paddock towards the main park.

>and how does it compare to TFA to ANH

TFA is a lot more similar to ANH than Jurassic World is to Jurassic Park.

Jurassic World at least tried to be a little bit different from the first movie. TFA didn't even begin to try.

Even if they asked him to, I think he's so soured on so many things around it (hated directing big movies, hated how people shat on him, hated how TFA was handled, relationship with Kennedy kind of frosty) that he wouldn't do it. I don't think there's a scenario in which he'd want to do it.

Besides, even if 8 and apparently 9 are following his notes more closely than 7 did, I think Lucas would still see this as someone else's creation rather than his own. I don't think he'd enjoy writing the final chapter of a saga where he didn't have a chance to also write the previous chapters.

There's this guy from college that has two big ass star wars tats on his forearms, the Alliance emblem and the Imperial crest. He loved TFA, thinks it was the perfect sequel, and has never watched The Clone Wars (that 3D one? That's shit, dude. The really old 2D one was much better) nor Rebels.

Hell, they could make him someone that actually abandoned his family. It would tie in with the core of his character, as someone who runs away when things get too dicey. He ran away from his family to join the First Order, he ran away from the First Order because they turned out to be evil, he runs away from the fight against them. His turn towards heroism would have an even greater impact if running away is something he's had a long history of doing.

i think he should have been part of the massacre and the rest of the film/trilogy is him trying to make up for his actions. They were too afraid to taint their hero to the point where two thirds of the way into the film he says that he was basically just a janitor, further removing him from any potential evil of the first order. If he was just a janitor then why was he on a seemingly important mission with phasma and kylo himself in the firstplace. Him being a storrmtrooper now has no relevance and was basically just used as a plot device in the film

They weren't friends, but the "Before the Awakening" book explains that he was the only guy on the squad that wasn't a complete asshole to Finn.

He still never gave Finn a name, which was common in the First Order as an acceptance thing, which is why Poe giving Finn a name was so significant.

This was all supposed to explain why Finn felt so detached and easily able to turn on the First Order, although I still wish the movie put a bit more effort in developing this too. Especially when you consider that without the context of the book, Finn's "friend" dying only makes it more confusing for normies as to why Finn would turn so easily.

What I found confusing there is that according to the book, Finn kind of had a history of being a softie. He was the one who'd go back and help "injured" comrades despite being told repeatedly that the mission was more important and fuck your comrades. Phasma even gives him a lecture about it.

But in the movie, Phasma claims Finn had never shown any issues. His history of being too compassionate is definitely something to bring up when you're wondering why he refused the order to slaughter a bunch of innocent people.

I think that's one of those things you have to chalk up to damage control. Before the Awakening at least explains why Finn seems to be fairly normal and even-tempered for a guy who was raised to be a killer, at the expense of making one of Phasma's lines contradictory.

If anything you could just pass it off as Phasma lying because she doesn't want to admit she fucked up with one of the trainees- which oddly enough would be in keeping with the extreme "look out for number 1" attitude we know she has thanks to her novel.

Was Trank officially hired though? Or was it like the Stephen Daldry situation where he was "in negotiations" to direct a Boba Fett standalone and then after Fant4stic and his twitter rant plus all the stuff about how he acted on set they decided to not continue negotiations with him. It's not like he was fired or replaced or whatever. Cuz I don't recall them ever officially announcing a Boba Fett standalone, or even officially announcing Trank directing a standalone in general.

Have they said anything officially about Daldry/the Kenobi movie yet? IMO if they're smart they should put that on hold for a little bit and let Episode IX be the main focus after TLJ and The Adventures of Young Han Solo
>>
>>95138229

Why are they called FIRST ORDER? Wouldn't THIRD ORDER be more accurate?

You've got Palpatine's dictatorship over the Republic (First). Then you've got the Galactic Empire (second). Now you've got the Third Order, which also sounds like Third Reich and we know their supposed to be Super Nazi's. Wouldn't it be in keeping that they see themselves as the next generation of the Republic and the rightful heirs to the galaxy and they see the new Republic as an abomination. Kind of like how in Heir to the Empire, Thrawn always refereed to the New Republic as the Rebels because he didn't see them as a legitimate government.

Should have been "Final Order". It would establish them as the true endgame villains, and it fits with them being the final order of Sheev, as he basically created them by tearing down the Empire and making the FO rise from the ashes.

The LSG did a good job using Rae Sloane to explain the name, but its clear that they only had to do this because JJ was lazy as fuck with the name in the first place.

JJ isn't a bad director, especially given his ability to make consistently watchable, if mostly unmemorable movies that include drawing out good performances from his actors. The problem is that he's a journeyman director who wants to be Spielberg, but lacks the latter's understanding of what makes a story work on a deeper level. It's actually why I question the claim that he was a fan of SW given that TFA never quite felt like a SW film to me at several points (although your mileage may vary on this one).
>>
I think it's pretty likely Rian will direct IX. I just can't believe that they would hire someone else when they already have this guy who everyone loves because he's so enthusiastic about doing his job, who's never made a turd of a film, who now has the experience and has worked with this world now, and who is eager to work in it again.
>>
>>95138748
Poor Sloane. At least she isn't Mon Mothma.

The things they had to do in order to justify JJ's retard fan fiction is up there with Aftermath.

I literally moved to San Francisco and reports in physically to Lucasfilm a lot.

He CLEARLY is liked there, and knows what he is doing. He even helps with the non-movie projects.

Rian staying on is honestly a safe but perfectly fine outcome.

Aftermath was passable, though. get past the first book and you get an average EU series.

>>

>Rian staying on is honestly a safe but perfectly fine outcome.
Yeah, and as others have mentioned it helps to have the person in charge of the middle chapter of the trilogy also handle the final chapter. The way they were (and maybe still are) going to do it is to have Rian just do his stuff for 8 and then have the person handling 9 come up with their own shit. We know that's what happened between 7 and 8, JJ came up with the beginning and didn't have any kind of plan beyond that and Rian just has to come up with something. It's a weird relay race concept in a trilogy that needs to have some kind of unified vision behind it. The ship has already sailed for a unified vision dictating all three movies but having the last two helmed by one person would at least ensure some smoothness between those.
>>
>>95139318
Not really. The story itself wasn't the problem, but the terrible writing style made it a slog to get through all three books. Give that same story line to an experienced, competent, author like Zahn or Stackpole and it would have been gold.

I'm never going to forgive Wendig for shitting on Wedge either.

I don't think all of the angles of the Finalizer were bad
>>
>>95139368

Yeah. I was worried about the ST not having a well defined aesthetic and feel to it, like the PT has, but when we think about most of the PT flavor came from Episodes II and III. Episode I introduced the Jedi Council, Maul and Droids, but that's really just that. The Clones, the ships, the big battles, the drama, the planets, all the things that make Star Wars what it is today were introduced and fleshed out in the latter entries.

TFA was our Episode I, and now we'll get what we all were really waiting to see.
>>
>>95139318
The point of Aftermath was the Battle of Jakku. Are you telling me that THAT was an adequate adaptation of it?

I really want Filoni's next project to be a retcon of that entire thing so no one will ever have to remember Wendig and his horrible books again.

The Battle of Jakku as a whole needs more love, because BF2015 is still the best version of it

Everything Wedge in new canon is because of Lawson unfortunately.

Truly one of the greatest losses form the old EU. Lazy bugger.

So, Mandelore is obviously supposed to be analogy for Germany. Are there any other nations or represented in the Star Wars cannon/legends?

Yeah I think the PT will be retro futuristic 50s, the OT will be retro futuristic 70s, and the ST will be retro futuristic modern day. People shit on the iPhone troopers but that's probably the point of them looking so sleek and modern. The iPhone changed how modern technology looks and greatly influenced the aesthetics of our modern world so having the Stormtroopers reflect the look of our generation's technology makes sense. Then when you look at the First Order ships they look a lot like modern military technology. Everyone dresses like Kanye West, their speech patterns resemble modern people, and the sort of crazy disjointed peace that's gonna fall apart any moment reflects the modern world as well.

Also the main character is a young girl who doesn't know who her parents are (look up how many families have fallen apart in recent years) but has survived alone keeping herself busy with back breaking work that she subconsciously realizes is for nothing (see: kids killing themselves with jobs to pay for pointless degrees) and she spends her free time playing virtual simulations. Then the main villain is a religious extremist who regularly massacres innocent people and wears a dark mask because he wants to intimidate people. And in the upcoming movie they encounter a planet of rich snobs who sit around drinking champagne while everything around them falls apart (see: Occupy Wall Street) and they enlist in the help of a hacker.

The Gungan-Naboo War

The Naboo and Gungans fought an open war between 150 BBY and 121 BBY, and during the conflict, the ruler of Naboo was killed. Once hereditary within the Jafan royal family, the Naboo elected a new monarch to lead them in the war. In an effort to turn the tide of the war in the Naboo's favor, a coalition of noble houses struck a secret deal with an offworld mercenary group, though the war was soon resolved without the need for external intervention.

>b-b-b-but Rey is the one

Rey is the key to the ST.
Jar-Jar was the key to the PT.

This means Rey will barely be in TLJ and only appear a few times in XI with one line of recycled dialogue from TFA.
