They did that in the 80's. It was called New Mutants. You even had them in arcs where they competed with Emma Frost's students named the Hellions.

Claremont X-men in general were filled with slice of life moments. In between superhero action you had soap opera drama and the cast chilling playing baseball or watching tv together.

And then there was X-Men Evolution, Generation X, the New Mutants revival, etc, etc.

Slice of Life is what X-men used to become mega-huge during the 80's and 90's.
