AT did it but in the right way. it dedicate whole episodes to flashbacks and giving you small glimpses into the characters history. that's different from what SU does, which is throw the viewer the occasional lore bone and having it build up to a musical fight or something stupid.

also AT writers knew to not take themselves or the show seriously. SU tries too hard to be serious but just comes off as mediocre.

Most works of fiction like this drop in little things that they don't have an explanation for then later down the line they come up with something and then work those old clues into that framework, SU is no exception
