Defend CalArts
>>
>>95125283

Alright I'll play devil's advocate.

CalArts isn't really as it is good. It teaches beginer artist the fundementals on a different scale than what you would learn in a class session.

It does help show progress on aspects of body fluidity and anatomy and animation on an average cartoon level.

Granted yes most people who do learn from CalArts tend to use the drawing style as a crunch and in thw long run may or may not learn to pick up new styles. But it what does teach his good consistency if a person does manage to find a different art style they loke and can get used to.

That's my veiw on CarlArts

>>95125283
CalArts just exposes hacks. It's such a simple art style that any 5 year old can draw it.
>>
>>95125524

If it's so simple 5 year olds can do it then we'd see a whole lot more drawfags in more threads, also I don't think most 5 year olds have the motor skills to make that level of art, stick rigures maybe, but a whole character with facial features and body expression? No.

What even is your persepective of a hack anyhow?
>>
People don't go to college to learn anything. They go to college to get a job. To that end, CalArts is fine. The studio has a lot of connections and can, at the very least, get people an internship at a big studio so they get a chance to work their way up.

In fact aren't there people that went to CalArts that don't use styles like this?
>>
>>95125283
A lot of this homogenization of artsyle which gets attributed to CalArts is more down to shows needing to simplify how their characters are drawn so that they're able to be animated on time and within budget, I also wouldn't be surprised if executive meddling has more than a bit to do with it too. If you look at the blogs and portfolios owned by a lot of the artists behind these "CalArts" shows they are actually able to draw and animate in styles other than that of OP's image.

Absolutely NOTHING of the CalArts meme makes sense.

If you believe in it, you are just an idiot.

Seriously, what you Fuchs even THINK that CalArts do? Most artists there draw in plenty of styles (you would knew if you followed them) and most of the shows attributed with a "CalArts" style aren't done by people who even STUDIED THERE. Even dumber because it's not the school who picks or give the budget to the shows, but the NETWORK.

I want to see you defending this meme.

Don't you try to pull that. It was made in the era of rampant flat Hanna-Barbera-like shows that CalArts graduates were constantly making. SJ had the same animation pacing and techniques as most other cheap shows at the time, only standing out because it was mainly action focused.

He's right, tho. Most Ivys have tremendous grade inflation, and classes not much better than your local community college.

If you want to learn, go to a State or land grant college. If you want the connections that will give you a huge step up in life over the plebes, go to an expensive fancy college where you meet the sons and daughters of the people who run the world, and you can put the university name on your resume so that other people who went there will choose you instead of the people who went to their local college and actually learned something.

This is true for most things. Especially with art, you can practice yourself to learn. Now I do think a school is useful to learn the current animation process, but I don't think there's a huge gulf between the big brand name expensive school and other schools. A lot of brand name schools in anything are more about connections than anything else. That said it doesn't mean they're bad just that there's more going on than the classes. A lot of them are also "gatekeepers" meant to sift out most of the people from certain classes as people like to hire others from their own class and social circle.

You go to get in with the right people and you pay so much because it pretty much guarantees you a high ranking position in any animation related job because of connections studios have with Calarts.

The USA is far from imploding, and even then most of the problems in the US are due to moving away from capitalism. Other western countries aren't any more of a blend of capitalism and socialism than the US, quite a few rate higher in economic freedom than the US, though I disagree with the presupposition that they are better off when compared to the US.
>>
>>95139533
>all other western countries are a blend of capitalism and socialism

Nearly all countries including the US are a mixture of capitalism and socialism called "mixed economies." In fact many countires using the so called "Nordic model" have much higher economic freedom than the US. They just also have a safety net that is really designed to support their free market systems. Safety nets aren't really socialist.

One cartoon with a certain style got popular and caused a bunch shows that came out thereafter to copy it. A true conservative party doesn't exist in the US, both parties are progressive in terms of how they create legislation and seek to shape policy.
Both of them are fond of the going to College is the key to life bullshit, in fact a lot of people would probably say that "conservatives" have a bigger hard on for it.

The real trouble is that they don't know how to regulate education, and so the cost has shot up since a lot of state schools double as research institutions and waste a ton of money that should be used on education for nonsense research and useless amenities on campus to draw more students.

>>95139578

hey, /co/. calarts kid here just stopping by.

calarts meme is bullshit. the school is fucking garbage for other reasons that aren't worth discussing on this board.
but nobody is forcing us to draw like this. they expect you to know how to draw when you get in. nobody is teaching us to draw like this. On the other hand, one of the figure drawing teachers here neglects draftsmanship in favor of loose observational garbage with zero structure in your second year, which is a fucking shame. there is a sense of wanting to conform to a certain standard to please teachers because of the competitive nature of the school, but that happens in any competitive environment.
But honestly if anything there was a point where the whole "bean" head thing was criticized heavily here. I think when Minkyuu Lee was teaching 2d animation here he referred to it as "butt eyes" or something along those lines and how much he hates it.
Hell, Joe Pitt used to fucking teach here and he's basically solidified the whole "bean head" thing thanks to gravity falls, so blame him, i guess.
Calarts has always been blamed for certain art style trends (ie, john k calling anything remotely disney "calarts"), when its cherry picking from a small pocket of students.
none of us fucking like this ugly bubbly bullshit. There's one person that draws like this, and none of us even like her, to be honest.
