I'm reading the John Carter books right now. I love them. Disney really fucked up making a live adaption instead of animated one.

A Princess of Mars would have been perfect because they could sell it as the "princess" line but with a princess they haven't done yet... An alien princess! I've never seen the movie though, so I don't know if it's good or not. I heard it wasn't but the point here is I think it's a waste of potential.

I don't think they could make the sequel even close to the second book. Not only did they change the Therns completely, the ending of the movie pretty much shows that they get a happy ending instead of leaving room for them to go to the River Iss.

Also since people in this thread know about John Carter I want to pitch an idea and get your opinion.

I want to write for DC, that's my life goal. And I want to specifically write for lot of the lesser loved characters. For instance Hawkman and Martian Manhunter.

That's why I even started reading John Carter because I wanted to see what someone else's fictional take on Mars was like. I think Mars is way cooler and more interesting since it's our damn neighbor. Life on Mars would effect earth a lot more than life anywhere else, but these cape universes have so many aliens Mars is just another planet. It should be a lot more important.

In order to highlight that I wanted to do a book called

>Carter Hall of Mars.

Basically one of Hawkman's previous incarnations got zapped to Mars ala John Carter. Now in narrative, Edgar Rice Burroughs is actually John Carter's nephew. He's just rewriting the diaries he received. I'm playing off that to say Carter Hall was the one who went to Mars and Edgar Rice Burrough changed a lot of the details because life on Mars was a big secret.

So the actual comic would be about Hawkman and J'onzz teaming up and having adventures on Mars. Basically fleshing out it's history and it's interaction with Earth. Like one big moment in the past was a telepathic Martian who was talking to someone via telepathy, but turns out he was talking to earthling! An ancient earthling in the DC universe. That earthling's descedant is the one who brought J'onzz to Earth. So the two neighbor planets have been interacting with each for a long time.

Something bad just happened killed off most life on Mars obviously.

Would this be a good book or too much of a rip off? It's supposed to be obvious homage and play on similarities of all the characters involved. Less ripping off Burroughs and more of a love letter of sorts.

When I imagine movies I always imagine trailers first, like the first thing you see from a movie.

For the Gods of Mars I think that first trailer scene would be like

Well, I wouldn't say that - standard superhero spandex doesn't show nipples or genitals in any detail. It's silly and unrealistic, but I can kind of understand how just showing the curves of a woman's body is supposed to be less scandalous than a real naked woman.

There would be no way to translate them well in the story either since the Therns in the books were cowardly weaklings, while in the film they are alien mages.
