Sonic can and has worked fine in both. He's just had colossal and unforgettable shitshows in both too and garnered a cancerous fanbase and rep from both.

Boom cartoon is fine, Archie under Flynn is fine, and 2D Sonic is mostly fine, as is boost.

Don't get me wrong, there could be far better than boost, but I really liked Modern Sonic in Generations in levels like Seaside Hill, City Escape and Rooftop Run. Colors relied way too heavily on 2D but had its moments, and I generally think day stages in Unleashed were well made aside from the last few. The main issue with boost is an over reliance on 2D and automated segments, but I more chalk them up to not making the most of the style or evolving it.

That's retarded. The problem with the comics, and the earlier 3D games, is that they're adapting a simple videogamey narrative into a full fledged story, when it's not suited to that.

Sonic is about a cartoon animal that fights robots made by a wacky evil scientist. When you start introducing X-Men style drama with romance, clones, time travel, and sacred prophecies, it no longer resembles the original premise.

You can't adapt games that have excuse stories where the appeal is the gameplay into a purely narrative medium.
