Yes…for the cover of a horror comic. A cover in bad taste, for example, might be defined as holding the head a little higher so that blood could be seen dripping from it, and moving the body over a little further so that the neck of the body could be seen to be bloody.

For the 50's I'd say it was. Not enough for the reaction it got, but enough to give them a stern warning to keep covers that anyone can see tame. Inside of the book can be as gruesome as they want.

I think without the drool and the eyes it might not be as bad. Even though they're simple, and non-gory, things it still adds to the "gore" of the image.
