In D&D terms, Stephen would be an Elminster-level archmage, one of the most powerful spellcasters within their plane of existence. L20+ wizard.

(I'd allow for there being some more powerful beings than Elminster, as there are sometimes more powerful mages than Strange running around, but that his connections and status still effectively put him at the top of the heap.)

Doom, throughout most of his history, struck me as a novice mage at best, maybe a 2nd level wizard. Over time he has experienced magical powercreep but even now he strikes me as maybe L12 or so.

Considering that, DOOM probably can use magic but without suffering the setbacks. For example, all the others call upon gods and beings to grant them power, but DOOM just... harnesses it, like any other energy. That's pretty based.

Eh, dunno. He does have some good in him. I'd believe that for Luthor who gave up literal Godhood and who blew up a whole planet to get at Superman, but Doom's a bit more restrained than that.

So because he's well-versed in one specific, high-risk/high-reward school of magic, but all the others are versed in several different schools, he has an edge over them somehow? What a stupid argument. And do you think the other sorcerers don't also know black magic? They just don't use it because it's risky. He's not Sorcerer Supreme because he isn't as powerful, learned, or skilled a sorcerer as Strange or Voodoo or Mordo or whoever else. Doom has restraint because his ego is bigger not less. After a certain point he just surpassed many of hurdles that lesser men would consider worthy of their attention. It's not about good or bad, it's about having a great and almost unattainable goal for which he will surrender other things.

Everyone talks about how horrible a villain he is, yet every damn one of his reads, at least the ones that I've seen or been suggested to see by /co/, depict him as more of a fucking antihero than an actual villain.

Don't remember if it was retconed or not, but Doom and strange both competed for the title, and Stange barely won.

Doom also isnt the best at any one thing, except that it has been mentioned that no one has been able to integrate science and magic together like him. In that hybrid-field, he stands above all. He also has a few things that he specializes in, like time machines and future timeline viewing.

Pretty sure Doom is actually novice level and the only reason he was able to keep up in Triumph and tragedy was because he used his suit to analyze the other mages as they casted magic so he could copy it. Doom actually had to be tutored by Strange before he could enter Hell because his magical aptitude wasn't very high. Strange also told Doom that simply knowing how to cast a spell wasn't the same as actually knowing how to use a spell

He was built from the ground-up, and part of that building was a machine allowing it to replicate brain waves. I don't think he's the greatest "programmer" in the MU - I've literally never heard or seen that on page before - but don't downplay his accomplishments. He is still considered the grandfather of artificial intelligence, though. Jocosta is not the only robot to call him so.

Simply because he is not as good of a sorcerer as Doc Strange. He relies on technology to enhance his powers, instead of truly mastering a spell. He is also extremely arrogant and very selfish, preventing him from becoming truly great.

Just check the Doom / Strange crossover. He is recording a mage all-out-brawl and copying others movements, and even messes up an incantation when attacking Strange which is why he gets beaten.

He basically had no formal training from an actual master like the Ancient One, and he is not humble enough to accept anyone as his master anyway. There was a what-if where the Ancient One taught him regardless, and he ended up saving the world but dying in the process.

and I don't even think if Marvel makes any distinction between light and black magic, the only rule is that magic has consequences (like a disappear spell may actually just dump shit into a magical realm, whose ruler would eventually get pissed off about it and then go and wreck your shit).
