DC realized that their titles were hopelessly stuck in an outdated style of storytelling and characterization with the LOSH still being almost as stiff as it had been in its introduction in 1958. While Vietnam, Woodstock, the Kennedy assassination, the hippy movement, free love, blaxploitation and other things had utterly changed the landscape of what a kid grew up with in the US, the Legion were still rocketing around in Flash Gordon spaceship and having simplistic space cadet stories. Their uniforms were also never amazing to begin with.

So DC did the only smart thing. They let new writers and artists loose on the Legion. I wouldn't say they transformed it into anything groundbreaking or counter-culture (as would probably happen today) but they cleaned out all the outdated garbage and ushered in a fairly dynamic team of teen supers with relationship drama, emotional storylines and raised stakes. Jim Shooter had tried to put the Legion on this path during his run, but he had been increasingly cock-blocked by editorial, but now the bets were off. That's when the Legion became DC's most popular title (second most popular after Wolfman/Perez New Teen Titans came out). It was relatable to the readers at the time, more grown up in terms of plot and story, and it was sexy.

So no, nothing went wrong. the Legion was saved from being another dusty relic of the Silver Age that only gets unearthed for nostalgia's sake.
