These are ok opinions. The rest of the opinions are trash, though. ANH is a bit clumsy, but it introduced us to the world in the first place, and set up a lot. Likewise, The Phantom Menace is clumsy, but it introduced us to the world a bit deeper. TFA ignored the rule of change, making the rebellion eternal. No surprise, as Disney and JJ are of the Revolutionary Spirit.

Why does everyone outside of /swco/ prefer TFA to RO? I get weird looks every time I say I prefer Rogue One elsewhere.

You don't NEED to watch Rebels or TCW or read Catalyst to understand everything in the movie.

This was /tv/'s number 1 complaint about Rogue One, because they couldn't possibly fathom that Star Wars fans would actually enjoy the series to be bigger and better connected to the cartoons and novels.

But the movie does a good job establishing everything independently for those that aren't so heavily invested in the series.

You don't NEED to read and watch all the other stuff, but you will get a much stronger experience and have better context/enjoyment from Galen, Krennic, Gerrera, ect.

Kinda like how you don't NEED to even watch the prequels to enjoy ANH, but you will certainly have more context and enjoyment there if you do, like Alderaan and Bail, and the Skywalkers actual identities, ect.

Star Wars works best this way, where the stories are strong enough to be self-contained, but still fit together like a jigsaw to make a huge beautiful painting if you so wish to see it all.

They kept me in the fandom, along with TCW and the EU.

I sort of enjoyed TFA, and liked Kylo as a character if not an (even temporary) antagonist, but R1 was all flash no substance, and the new EU has failed to grab me. I've gone from checking in on new releases and spending time on the thread than anywhere else on 4chan, to practically forgetting about SW and clicking on the thread once a month or so.

I also have a really bad feeling about TLJ.

This is one of the reasons why I love star wars so much. I would even go as far to say that it's refreshing to rewatch/reread stories with new knowledge about events and characters. I haven't seen ANH in a while, but it became more enjoyable to watch it with everything that happened in Rogue One in mind and I'm sure it will get even more enjoyabl once Rebels ends.
The same thing happened with TCW and the prequels. TPM, AotC and RoTS now feel like a proper prelude, beginning and a bitter end to a war that really was a long galaxy-wide conflict.
Now if only Lucasfilm could do the same treatment to the Galactic civil war. They did a good job so far with Rebels and Rogue One.
And I really hope they will do something similar about the ST. For a trilogy that's so far trying hard to double down on nostalgia, it really feels disconnected from everything while also having bizarre story decisions (Luke's failure, the whole thing with Han and Leia, and the overpowered but """"small remnant"""" First Order).

I'm not being negative for the sake of being negative. My issue with most Canon novels is that they're not really taking enough time to build self-contained stories with their own lasting effects. Or, they can do something on the scale of Aftermath, but at least let it advance the story somehow. My biggest issue atm is when they do a spinoff novel off some movie or animation character, build up their own little cast for a few hundred pages, then come down to a completely unsatisfying narrative arc, never to be seen or heard from again (see Ahsoka, Phasma).

The Phasma book is in between TFA and TLJ so we don't know if any of those new original characters are not to be seen again, but of course it is unlikely. Cardinal held an important role in the First Order though, and Vi brought him to the resistance at the end so it's possible he'll show up at some point, but also unlikely, as it might be difficult to summarize his origins.

I'd say your criticisms are justified if we end up never getting sequels to the books you've mentioned. It's only been a year since a lot of books came out, it's possible there just hasn't been time yet to resolve the lose ends. Anyway, the books are pretty enjoyable on their own.

Yeah, but it's highly unlikely they're going anywhere with Ahsoka or Phasma. Nothing truly lasting can happen to Phasma outside of the movies, and Rebels has Ahsoka. Which is why I'm advocating for more book series' with their own casts (i.e. Aftermath, but not shitty).

Catalyst, Bloodline, and Thrawn are exceptions to the rule, I feel. Catalyst tells a good story because there was a story to be told offered by the movies (which they rarely do); Zahn's just that good; and, like with Catalyst, there was a story in Bloodline to be told because, I believe, Rian Johnson extended a hand to the author with some ideas. So it really only works out when the movies (or whatever they're spinning off) allow them to, and there are good self-contained stories like Thrawn, but at the end of the day they're still a minority IMO.

In Thrawn's book we find out that he's doing some kind of intel work for the Chiss and that he's sent Eli to the ascendancy, but no idea why or how or when. He's not mentioned in any other book beyond the Aftermath trilogy, where it's implied he's supplied the map of the unknown regions for the Imperial remnant. Rebels still has this upcoming season so it's possible his story ends there. It's also possible Zahn gets another book to expand on the details of Thrawn's purpose for infiltrating the empire. The season 4 trailer for Rebels brings up the Death Star, which Thrawn was just discovering at the end of his book. This may be the motivating factor for his departure from the series, as a result of death or defecting or returning to Csilla to report on the Death Star.

In Bloodline we get this huge buildup on the beginnings of the First Order as a public group, with Carise Sindian being behind it somehow. We get very little information on how she became part of the First Order and nothing on what happens to her later and are currently to assume she died on Hosnian Prime or there was some sort of split within the senate when the First Order became public. Further, we are introduced to young senator Casterfo who has been sentenced to death by the end of the book and that was never resolved. The beginnings of the Resistance were also implied at the end of Bloodline.

All of these story lines weren't tied up though. Loose ends are everywhere.

Sort of, but the Wookies were a threat to the Empire which is why their world was razed to begin with. A Wookie is still considered dangerous and they would be watched carefully and not left to their own devices.

But the Empire didn't consider the Ewoks a threat when setting up shop because they're a bunch of diminutive teddy bears. Anybody could look at a Wookie slave and see the value in convincing them to fight, but nobody but Luke could see the value in the Ewoks. That's the whole point.
