Why? wouldn't the finnish or possibly swedish version be closer to how it should be? Jansson was a swedish-speaking finn after all, and wrote the scripts (or maybe it was her brother, but Jansson at least wrote the original books and comics, a lot of the dialogue is from her)
It's not a japanese creation at all, so imo it's not the "original" language, they don't even pronounce the names right and fucked the spirit of moomin up completely the first time they tried to animate it

Well the thing is that the Finnish original version was missing three episodes which the local censors thought back in the days of being too extreme for kids (yet they allowed us to be traumatized by Groke and that ONE FUCKING VAMPIRE EPISODE!).
Anyways, there's a new dub around that is going to include all episodes, also picture quality is apparently better since the original films got a bit exposed and darkened, causing Moomin to have a darker coloration in Finnish TV than on most other versions of the copy.

While I really love the atmosphere of the moomins cartoon and books, the comic books and movie that was based on them are in a totally different, edgier tone. It's not as appealing and the concepts it deals with are lighter.

For those of you looking for new moomin content, here is an absolutely beautiful Russian stop-motion Moomin film I watched a lot as a kid. Both my parents were immigrants so we had a lot of Russian movies on VCR. There's an English version that's ok if you don't like subtitles (I can't stand the musical changes, the originals soundtrack is amazing) but the original is one of my favorite stop motion pieces. Perfectly captures the comfiness and innocence of the original.

Basically back in the 90s Finish Broadcasting Corporation (YLE) managed to acquire 25 years long license for Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka, recently the license ran out and MTV3 (not related to the American MTV) managed to acquire rights to air Moomins. Anyway they originally planned to use YLE's old dub but then some jewery happened (no one is sure whether it is because YLE decided to be greedy jews and demand shitload of money or MTV being stingy jews and refusing to pay anything more than a plug nicket, probably both if you ask me opinion) and MTV decided to make a new dub instead of using the old one. Well the problem is that YLE's dub benefits from the fact that it is a state owned corporation and thus has plenty of time and money to throw around, meanwhile MTV3's dub was made on a budget and extremely quickly and it shows in quality. To make matters worse YLE owns the rights to the script they used in their version which was based on Japanese script with further improvements from Lars Jansson (Tove Jansson's younger brother) meanwhile not only is the new dub based solely on the English translation of Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka but it also pretty much written in the Finnish equivalent of Basic English (for comparison YLE used richer and slightly old fashioned language in its dub).
