Post your art pls?

Are you a bad enough dude to rescue Cartoon Network?
>>
>>95086420
Its just a school and I already follow a shitload of artists that studied or study on the school.

So why the fuck should I care about your AMA?

I've got friends at USC's department, but no one at Calarts.

How many tumblrinas?
How far up their ass is the average character animation student? Do they all think they're writers and not animators?

post the portfolio that got you in

Congratulations, you are spending an unreasonable amount of money to make cartoons with people who think that it is ok to make mediocre crap.
What makes it even worse is that there is a good chance that you'll never make your own cartoon, and by the off chance that you actually do, it will be butchered by people who don't get a damn about them.

How naive, no one goes to art school just to learn how to draw. It's for connections and to meet key people in the industry.

My dad works in the CalArts grounds department.

I probably have better stories than the douches who go there.
>>
>>95087431
Calarts is the bourgeoisie of the animation industry. A bunch of pampered, pretentious kiddos behind a paywall who laud themselves for some concept of creativity when many of their works are assembly line manufacturing, "inspired by Sailor Moon" over a real knowledge of culture and cinema.

Is that enough projection, or should I continue?
>>
>>95087431
Of which calarts is teeming with, right, more than other major schools of art, right? So much more than conventions or festivals or animation studios looking for unpaid interns, definitely.
And no, leaning may not be everything, but it's a good chunk of everything you do in college, connections won't do much for you if you don't learn to do the job they'll want you do. In any case, pretty much the payment you give to the school is because of the "quality" of education you will supposedly receive there.
>>
>>95087616
I'm more curious by what the quality of work the average student makes is. You clearly need some amount of talent to get in, but most alumni draw basic looking cartoons the rest of their lives so what exactly is the criteria for acceptance?

They have to submit a sketchbook and a portfolio that shows that they're basically almost or already professional level
>>

>Trying to get real connections at a con
Yeah, those Homestuck cosplaying teenagers will get you a job at Disney.

You can meet artists, yes. Back in July I met a great artist who might be helping me with some concept art. But that kind of stuff isn't going to matter unless you already have a foot in the door, or headed towards the door, in some other capacity.
>>
>>95087731
I don't really dig the artstyle, but the sketchbook seems pretty good

Sailor Moon (the 90s anime, fuck the remake) is miles ahead of anything made nowadays in terms of design
>>
I went to another art school which is essentially worthless, but I work at Disney TV now which is dominated by CalArts alum.

Why are you all so defensive of having an unfair advantage just because you went to CalArts?
>>

https://youtu.be/iWwNUuVgDXg
Calarts sketchbook videos are the easiest way to figure out what they like. Loose lines, lots of color, and an assload of studies and figures are what always get accepted. It's really interesting that the school gets a lot of shit for the calarts style when the people going in have to be pretty decent at technical drawing to even attempt getting in. I honestly think that its more of a studio problem than a school problem
>>
>>95087640
Calarts is practically down the down road from Hollywood. Why else do you think their alumni dominate the industry?
>>
>>95086420
Are you a faggot?

I know this is an AMA but this question is rhetorical. Carry on.
>>
>>95087843
>fandom cons are the only cons
You totally got me there.
In any case my point is that schools are supposed to charge for the quality of what they can and will give you - in this aspect, calarts is extremely overrated - not of who you may or may not meet in the places were the school may or may not put you through, of which Calarts doesn't give you much advantage over someone who studies literally anywhere else and does a good research and a few trips or works his way up from a small studio making fan games.

>>
How many weeaboos are in CalArts? Percentage wise.
>>
>>95087731
Damn, I only started drawing recently but it's mostly digital stuff. Haven't tried drawing on paper too much except to practice. But that sketchbook didn't seem too complicated. I had to draw a 26 page sketchbook for a high school artclass and it was nowhere near that level but I really enjoyed doing it. Maybe I'll apply in a year or two just to see if that door is open for me.
>>
>>95087150
Sorry you didn't get in, cuck. Bunch of jelly neckbeards IRL, good luck never having your projects get off the ground
>>
>>95086420
Are all the other departments besides the animation department useless for getting a job in the industry?
>>
>>95087371
Was going to this college part of your plan?
>>
>>95088108
Cartoon Network has already moved almost all of its stuff online as part of their app.
>>
>>95087963
OK I may not be an expert but that's fairly easy: CalArts only admits people who are already near-professional level artists; people with big aspirations, passion and almost already working on projects of their own, CalArts alumni dominating gives these people with big goals and aptitude to achieve them the idea that attending that particular school is a requirement to make it big.
Thus, they attend CalArts, they graduate from CalArts and with some luck they make it big in the industry.
It's a vicious cycle started because a lot of it's students got lucky and made it big in the 90's.
>>
>>95087927

>>95088271
Do you work in cartoon, i know you can't tell, but how it's to be in your childhood job dream, how are people in animation, is this place still see as a boogyman, like you can get your reputation ruined for pos here?
>>
>>95088014
You're essentially saying schools should be judged on the rigor of their curricula rather than their industry "brand." I agree with you completely (it would be a dream of mine to check out Gobelins's English-language MA one day), but that doesn't change the present situation in which around 90% of Disney directors attended Walt's school.
>>
>>95087640
This is ridiculous autism. The whole point of prestigious name brand colleges, whether it's Harvard, USC, NYU, or CalArts, is that you get valuable connections in the industry way ahead of anyone else. You don't git gud at these colleges, you have to BE gud, then you learn how to blanden your work up for the lowest common denominator to sell, THEN you make connections.

But you wouldn't know any of that because you're a fucking redcuck with twenty dicks in your ass.
>>
>>95088271
Sheridan?
>>
>>95087731
It's good but I don't know if I'd call that professional level.
>>
>>95088487
Eh, lots of others facts besides BEING good. Good fucking luck getting into an Ivy League if you're white or Asian for example, you can't just have talent or intelligence you have to be a top 1 of the top 1 percentile of people. Even then, good luck because you have to compete with the Senator's kids whose parents gave the school millions in donations. There's tons of assholes with Ivy League degrees now who were far from the most qualified, Harvard got shit this year for having more minorities than ever in their freshman class and for good reason, brown people didn't just up and all become smarter there was an institutional push to place greater importance on race. The remaining non-whites were all likely fabulously well-connected.

Not saying getting into those schools isn't impressive, but it means less than it used to. Same with getting rejected. There's just a lot more factors at play now than "how smart/good are you?". You have to be a special snowflake since birth now.
>>
>>95088452
That's because no one ever stopped to think if had they not attended calarts would they still be there; I believe it's like getting american citizenship based on academic or athletic achievement, if you're good enough for that, you could've made it pretty much anywhere. And because no one will ever say "I attended the most prestigious and expensive art school in the country and still didn't made it anywhere".
I'd bet it would also be interesting to know the percentage of alumni that compromises "90% of Disney's directors".
>>95088487
And then there's this projecting corporate tool with the attention span of a cricket on LSD.
>>
>>95088194
>near-professional level artists
Looking at those accepted sketchbooks, they look about decent student level.

Goeblins seems to have a much higher standard.
>>
>>95088756
*Gobelins
>>
>>95088756
OK, it's fair. But you still get my point, yes? CalArts is just insanely overpriced and overrated.
>>
>>95088674
>Not saying getting into those schools isn't impressive, but it means less than it used to. Same with getting rejected. There's just a lot more factors at play now than "how smart/good are you?". You have to be a special snowflake since birth now.
It was always like this, the scales are only now falling from peoples' eyes because they're favoring slightly different special snowflake qualities, and people who would have coasted in in the past are left out of the new trends.

It's a mistake to attribute this to some massive shift in how things are done, it's the same old shit from a differently skin-toned asshole.

>>
People complaining about CalArts always say the dumbest shit, and ignore that the worst things out there are made by non CalArts students (some times for the sake of not hiring CalArts students, like SU and NuPPG)
>>
>>95087897
It's funny how the right image looks so fucking dead compared to left.
>>
>>95089106
Also, related to it, its also really fucking dumb from most of /co/ to think that artists usually can only draw in one art style.

Like, Seth Macfarlane worked on plenty of shows in the past where he was drawing in different art styles before going to Fox, in the same way, Genndy and Butch like to draw in a Kirby-esque style, Rebecca Sugar actual style (on the pilot of SU) is very different to the style of the show (that actualy take after Ian art style).

Usually regarding this type of things about the industry, /co/ is excepcionaly dumb and had no idea on how things work. Wouldnt surprise me if 30% of the board thinks that most episodes of cartoons are done in 2 months.
