It really does look that way.

I'm sure that it is genuine and coming from a sincerely creative place to further flesh out America as a character and open up new story opportunities for her. I mean, I'm sure that Ms G Rivera is not at all the kind of extreme reactionary that would have America break up with her established girlfriend just because she's a blond, white girl. I'm also sure that the fact that America's former "true love" just happens to be a Mestiza is a total coincidence, and that she was meant to be introduced as organically as possible.
