Yeah that's what I hate most about mechs of all kinds. The human body is not designed as a war machine, the human body is a long-distance-running and toolmaking machine.

A war machine should look like a tank or, if you insist on being freestanding, a tripod or spider-like configuration. There's absolutely no reason for an elongated torso and dangling arms.
>>
>>95061656
Lots of smaller mechs each individually controlled by a metal bender would have been cool. Make them different sizes so that the stronger metal benders could use larger ones.

Have Korra and the police take one down and have them pilot it.

Queue an Avatar piloted mecha that uses fire, water, and wind in addition to metal.

Then it gets ripped apart by all the enemy metal benders combining their will only for Korra to jump out Avatar mode and start ripping and tearing.

The drill was fucking awesome because we didn't get to see much technology like that, but it still felt natural and something conceivable. It was built up slowly by it's lack of speed, like a slow motion train trash which gave it this 'oh shit'.

A giant robot is fucking lame. We could have had giant tanks, guns and cannons but instead they tried to go EVA.
>>
>>95063334
Plus Eva units are more like advanced alien life with cybernetic implants.
>>
>>95061656
Well, I was originally hoping for them to mount the cannon on train tracks and just use it to out speed Korra, as a good technology advancement vs traditional bending fight.
But I love giant robots, so setting it appear was great even if it needed better build up. Its where they went with it the next few episodes that dragged it down
>>
>>95063491
Call me old fashioned but I actually like the tank-esk design. Something made of metal should look heavy. The giant mech in korra looks like someting out of evangelion and while evangelion made the "mechs" feel giant thanks to the animation and the framing (note that most of the time they are move by trucks) but also made feel capable of moving really well thanks to the color scheme that made them look not made of metal but plastic or some other futuristic material.
>>
>>95064078
the original avatar had tecnology as well but it evolved relatively slow, the tanks looked clunky and basic, the giant drill was slow and masive and the zeppelins from the second half of season 3 where a natural evolution of the flying ballon from season 1. Korra whent from biplanes to tecnology imposible even to modern 21 century humans.

We went from steam punk tech has just dawned on an ancient Asian culture to super giant death ray armed robot in a single lifetime.

My first thoughts were, good God Bryke couldn't give an iota of a fucking fuck. Korra was ruined and stupid the moment from the moment season 1 ended, but they kept driving the standard of writing lower and lower and lower to the point that they have Korra fight a giant sci fi robot. Literally. That's her final opponent. A giant futuristic robot. It's the equivalent of ATLA ending with the Gaang fighting Ozai on the fire nation's moon base.

The drill was also fucking lame.

Could've have the fire nation setting a new kind of super bomb, or fucking with a lava flow underground to get the walls to quake apart. But a giant drill shows up out of nowhere. It's obviously a Mike and Bryan idea. They're so tone deaf to genre and do a fantastic job of horribly ignoring the arduous amount of tight world building they create.

The Drill was this bullshit all stems from.

>>
>>95068517
"modernizing" the setting wasn't the problem, it was the fact that they couldn't pick a period and stick with it. The 1920s aesthetic was neat, and the early model cars were cool, all of that made sense and having some amount of technological advancement makes sense, especially with them trying to explore relations between people with literal magic powers and all the poor normies who can't shoot fire out of their dicks. Going full gundam was retarded, there was no reason for a jump in technological sophistication of that magnitude, it made no fucking sense. It would have made way more sense if the big weapon Kuvira was having made was just a nuke-equivalent using the spirit vines to make bombs, but I'm guessing Nick wasn't okay with something like that.
>>
>>95068608
While you're right it didn't have to be a problem, i do know some people who dropped LoK because of it's modernization of a fantasy setting. I do get why someone wouldn't like the modern touch to it since it is originally made to be mythical and those kind of stories/worlds just don't work very well in the mordern era. It's the same reason i dislike the idea of going even further into the future with Avatar, like space travel and cyborgs, at that point we're just not talking about Avatar anymore.

What i think was the real problem is that Bryke, and especially Bryan, seemed to want to make a sci fi story, not an avatar story.
>>
>>95068732
If that was the case then they would have had Aang live to be as old as Kyoshi and then have the next Avatar be in a group trying to discover water on other planets.

I mean... we had a cannon on a fucking train ala Railway Gun (look it up) in a world (and props to the writers on this) where guns were not a thing so they didn't even have a 'word' for what this 'thing' did when this burst of energy exploded outwards from the 'things' opening.

But we didn't put it on a zeppelin, we didn't put it on a super tank, we didn't just keep it on a super-train to drive straight into the city, We didn't just make a giant firing-base near the city... we put it on a fuck hueg robot.

This is why you need various opinions in the writing/storyboard room. THIS SHIT is what happens when you echo-chamber.

This shit really gets me thinkin; We always bring this topic up as well as other topics where we all scream "this looks stupid as shit" and we spend three seconds on Google Images to post better looking shit that, generally, a lot of us agree on.

So how is it that the creators thought in any way this was a good idea?

I'll repeat; we found sexier, better designs by spending three seconds on google images. They could've looked at those and taken inspiration...

The original concept was aang waking up on a post apocalyptic future he was supposed to be frozen for a 1000 years not only 100 but I guess part of the problem is that if you make the setting to similar to the real world you fall in some kind of suspension of disbelief uncanny valley, to strange to be relatable but to similar to real life to make it fantastical. That is why when you have a story with fantastical elements the character usually travel to another world like Narnia or the black tower or enters a secret world with its own rules like harry potter.

Fuck you, magitech is kickass when its done right. The problem is that the Avatar universe advanced way too quickly by going from slightly more advanced Three Kingdoms China type setting straight into 19th century era technology in the span of two generations. Then they started bringing in mechas and other bullshit steampunk which made the jump in technology even less believable. They also neglected a lot of the more spiritual aspects of Avatar outside of the spirits which were handled rather poorly compared to how they were in the previous series.

Well since it runs on a dual track. You will be building new rail lines for it. Which you then assemble the gun on the spot. The track will have a curved section to give you all the firing arc you need to whatever city you're aiming at. Hope this answers your question.

Metal bending is bending the impurities. Even Tof needed to have some point of contact with the metal to begin. Naturally other people can use sight in lieu of vibrational awareness but without awareness of your target there is no bending.
The thick platinum coating would do the trick, especially if it was moving and people were being attack so they were unable to focus on sensing and interacting with the metal inside.

Not that guy but
a) some shows with mecha in them don't seem to scale appropriately. For example the walls in Knights & Magic are large human scale siege walls when robots are basically the same size or a bit shorter. that would provide no feasible defence from creatures (as there are huge ones) or enemy humans. The scale of the world should be massive to meet the advent of bipedal mecha.
b) there's no reason for something so top heavy in our current world. Tanks can fire shit more stably and likely move faster. If there were still things left to siege rather than starve out or bombard then there might be a need which mecha could fill but until then there's not much at all
c) we will never advance to mecha until at least space. As it stands now there will never be another 'real' war. Just proxy guerrilla wars. Nukes make war immediately accelerate to its logical conclusion. Regardless or army sizes as long as both parties have nukes it will come down to whether they are willing to use them.
tl;dr fuck nukes. If we'd never figured them out war would be much more prevalent and we'd have way cooler technology.
>>
>>95076691

Feels like it's been a thing since LoK started. It's not really that interesting though.

no alchemists. when bending exists, especially water bending with its healing abilities, the worlds scientists would look to that as the gateway to immortality moreso than just mixing and refining chemicals.

seriously, the process to make black powder really isn't intuitive if you don't already know what it results and how it works

Yes, for two reasons:
1. Box cutter design is pretty smart for keeping a sharp edge, since if it breaks or dulls you just click a new blade section up.
2. The box cutter is a crazy girl murderer meme, and that particular Eva is piloted by the crazy girl.

wasn't there for the other threads but feels weird the avatar universe can make robots and giant lasers but not basic guns.

>>95080041
what about greek fire? sounds like something the fire nation would love to use against the water tribes (flames keep on burning even in water).

Hahaha holy fuck. I watched ATLA but I never watched Korra. Do they really do this?

Not to mention that Eva was one of the shows where robot mechas was a part of the premise, so it's pretty easy to overlook.

In the last season, but yes. They also did some weird astral projection fight.

It's important for a thread about the giant mecha to establish why there's exactly only one gun in the known world. That they had all the technology to build a giant robot and a giant cannon but couldn't figure out a better way to defend it than having it slap itself.

Which is also why it's so stupid that the solution to beating it was to fly straight up to it with a miniature saw and cut a hole in it.

>Humanoid tank but on threads
What is the goddam point of that? Like, the entire reason a mech might have feasibility whatsoever is because of it's legs. That's just the monster trick equivalent of a tank.

God made men and Amon made them equal.

the other one has wheels.

basically both haven't cleared the whole "legs for walking" hurdle.

No. Obvious answer is that it's kids' cartoon and those seldom have firearms.

As my go-to expalination for lack of firearms in fantasy, easily accessible magic left no market for early firearms (Those were weak and unreliable compared to bows) so they never had experience to improve to better models.

Unless someone invent semi-automatic rifle from scratch, guns will never catch on.

With its tall profile, high centre of mass and relatively narrow feet, mecha is a perfect combination of vulnerability of a low-flying helicopter and mobility of a superheavy tank prototype that was never produced because no bridge in the world can cold its weight.

So the series would still be nice and kept with the AtLA vibe that people wanted and want to go back to?
You're just making me upset, anon.
