Good evening owls,

I hope there's no eagle murder in this one
>>
On the other hand, I hope no eagle escapes this comic unmurdered.
>>
>>95048876
>:(
>>
>>95048895
Christ, what an asshole

I kind of despise baseball but I loved all the stuff in Foes with Boomerang and the New York Meh
>>
>>95048853
Hello, Storyteller.

>eagle murder
Seriously, this book got fucking weird out of nowhere, and I love it.
>>
>>95048910
>>
>>95048910
I don't care about baseball but my mother and I have habitually watched the Mets our whole lives, even if we don't pay attention to the games at all.

We're considering swapping our Mets subscription to a Met Opera subscription on your recommendation
>>
>>95048930
>>
>>95048941
!!!!

if you want advice on specific shows, just ask and I'll steer you good

Lethem:

>He gained an encyclopedic knowledge of the music of Bob Dylan, saw Star Wars twenty-one times during its original theatrical release, and read the complete works of the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick. Lethem later said Dick’s work was "as formative an influence as marijuana or punk rock—as equally responsible for beautifully fucking up my life, for bending it irreversibly along a course I still travel."
>>
>>95048853
But eagle is apparently really delicious!
>>
>>95048910
Baseball just isn't a sport in my part of the world at all but I kinda love what I know about Ichiro.
>>
>>95048971
>>95048915
there's a lot to be said for this 10-issue limited edition format, some of which is that it's really, really planned out and looking back you can see the slow burn

>>95048981
I loved the narrative box there: "Food must fly"
>>
>>95048853
So, this is apparently news that's like two days old, but
>Girls are too intrinsically moral for the Lord of the Flies (female version) to make sense
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/08/31/all-female-lord-flies-remake-faces-backlash-misses-point-women/

Haha. Fuck feminism.
>>
>>95048971
>Bob Dylan and Philip K. Dick
A man after my own heart.
>>
>>95048971
I totally tore through PKD's work when I was like 14 or 15. I still re-read him or bits pretty regularly. Vaguely want to give one of Lethem's books a try now.
>>
>>95048992
It's mostly that I spent too much time with someone who would narrate the entire fucking game to you when you're all "stop talking at me, please, I DON'T FUCKING CARE"

>>95049017
IMO the bigger point that's missed is that Lord of the Flies is a very direct response to a specific book of British adventure fiction and you'd really have to think about how to make it work with grils and not public school boys
>>
>>95048895
This feels kinda... grooming.
>>
>>95049017

Literally a quote from Golding
>>
>>95049017
If I showed this to any woman I know they would laugh themselves into a coma.
>>
>>95049017
It's ultimately landing in the right place (girl version is dumb) but they took the wrong road to get there.

You can't literally just swap the genders and keep the rest the same, you have to flip the tropes too.
>>
Hey can we read Hard Time after this at some point (if we haven't before)?
>>
>>95049037
I was so depressed that Phil Jimenez responded to Zirch about the idea by citing this godawful evopsych book that Dan Savage likes because it bolsters his anti-monogamy stance

I like Phil a lot but he has weird ideas about women. I'll take it over classic gay misogyny any day, but still, weird ideas.

>>95049061
upload it for me and pitch it to me because next was gonna be straight-up fucking Howard the Duck, original scans
>>
>>95048930
I really enjoyed that scene.

My sister and mother are diehard Yankees fans, and I continually give them guff for it (as they are the archetypal sports overdogs) but Mo was okay.
>>
>>95049041
There's a weird gap in both this and the original series where the sponsors of the kid put him in a situation that doesn't line up with them. Like James-Michael/Alex ends up in a really shitty situation but he's being trialed out by a private hospital and/or a literal millionaire super... something.

I think that adds to the weirdness and kind of "I'm looking at this through a camera (and everyone knows it)" feel which I don't have a better word for. But that sense of observation, voyeurism definitely has that sensation of grooming too. I agree.
>>
>>95049083
If we're on a Gerber kick can we do Man-Thing eventually?
>>
http //comicbook.com/comics/2017/08/30/Line-Webtoon-Outrage-Series/
>Sometimes you need a bully to beat a bully, and that's where the new hero Outragecomes in

Retarded and obvious bait.
Also reads like a "censor free speech" superhero. 5 bucks on the villains being fat white cis male trolls.
>>
>>95049083
I've never read it but it's by Gerber/Skrenes like the original Omega and it's pretty clearly a spiritual successor when you read up on it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Time_(comics)

I don't have it but I can go looking.
>>
>>95049121
that is definitely relevant to our interests

I still giggle at Parker getting that GIANT-SIZE MAN-THING joke into Thunderbolts
>>
>>95049121

We should do Man Thing b4 Howard desu, go chronological

Someone give storytimer Gerbers Defenders cause I wanna read that...
>>
>>95048994
I would give Astonishing Tales of Nutrition a curiosity buy or two.
>>
>>95049037
I would totally be there for LotF but with like, Wycombe Abbey girls though. If you thought about it. In a Hollywood film, they'll probably make the girls American.
>>
>>95049129
I've got it and can upload
>>
>>95049146
>>95049171
I love how this feels like an askew Marvel Universe
>>
>>95049184
how are you owls tonight

I am sitting here with a plastic bag on my head
>>
>>95049046
Doesn't mean he's right about it, though.
>>
>>95049205
hair color, or suicide?

I had a half day at work and I got some errands done afterwards, it was nice
>>
>>95049220
hair color again, trying a different brand
>>
>>95049129
I half remember reading the first series back when I still trolled mIRC for scans to upload to /co/

It is a pretty solid book about a minor with lightning powers getting sent to Federal Pound You in The Ass Prison.
>>
>>95049205
They generally advise against that OP.
>>
>>95049205
There is fucking Christmas decorations being sold now. Cause BER season whatever.
>4 months of Christmas songs played repeatedly in malls
Comfy
>>
>>95049269
BTW we are ???? for tomorrow depending on plans, off Sunday and Monday, then on, most likely
>>
>>95049184
>I love how this feels like an askew Marvel Universe

Like it's 616* or something? I feel it too.
>>
>>95049271
>>95049183
Well, even if OP won't run it I'd appreciate reading it.
>>
>>95049205
Tired. Thristy.
Angry at myself for not clearing more backlog, or being healthy, etc. etc.
>>
>>95049287
OH JESUS FUCK THAT SHIT

Christmas should not start before Thanksgiving

>>95049318
I need to work out a lot more because I just hurt all the time
>>
>>95049205
Alright, I guess. I gave myself a haircut today, because long hair is annoying as fuck, and I naturally look like a jackass anyway. Hence, fuck it. Absolutely worth it too, feels great to not have a bunch of black strings in my fucking face constantly.
>>
>>95049341
>>95049343
short hair is the best

no maintenance
>>
Some bad news to anon: My copy of the first issue of Hard Time is corrupted and the copies in most of the usual places are corrupted as well. Trying to track a good one down but no promises because it is pretty obscure.

Here's all the Gerber I've uploaded so far:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/0kuropic1bxq87q/AACSv3PE52uuelXnHnsjzbEPa?dl=0
>>
>>95049358
>>
>>95049388
And here's one of those big dangling ends from the original
>>
>>95049382
It's OK senpai. Thanks for trying, and don't feel you have to go out your way.
>>
>>95049341
Well we don't have thanksgiving here, so it's 4 months Christmas with Halloween and storm caused dayoffs inbetween
>>
>>95049341
The background of weirdness in this incarnation of Omega is really, really nice.

Like, a nano-corrupted dismembered hand turning into a clone(?) That's some quality Weird.
>>
>>95049415
American Thanksgiving is a goddamn quality holiday, I will say this for it
>>
>>95049429
It is, and it's a great WTF hook that keeps you reading, too
>>
>>95049467
fucking lol

>NOT ENOUGH FOR YOUR ROBOT PARENTS TO BURN UP ONCE
>>
>>95049467
Having actually read some Omega the Unknown now... what the heck do you figure Tom King's Omega the Unknown (starring Wonder Man) was like?

Who played The Boy to Simon's Omega?
>>
>>95049467
>>
>>95049521
>>95049517
I feel bad that Wonder Man is now stuck with Zub, lol
>>
>>95049545
holy shit
>>
>>95049545
Duggan shoulda stolen him and had him (re)join the Guardians.
>>
>>95049517
References aside it wouldn't necessarily involve the kid at all if nobody made the connection

jesus look at the detail on this cover
>>
>>95049650
>>
>>95049545
I like how The Mink is nice to his employees.

And I just now realized that this is exactly what I've been rambling on about for ages. A superhero with their own mooks. Nice. Thanks, Gerber!
>>
>>95049694
Funerals are hard

I'm not remotely over the three I went to last year
>>
>>95049382
I found a copy of the first issue that works, lemme upload it

I don't think so.

He was pretty to the point even when he did start talking.
>>
>>95048971
Lethem is fucking fantastic
>>
>>95049694
This funeral is less impactful than the one for James-Michael's buddy, because Hugh was much more of a background victim.

>>95049704
>Gerber
>>
>>95049746
Bless you anon.
>>
>>95049721
Just because he's an asshole doesn't mean he isn't a superhero.

Seriously, if Tony Stark gets to still be a "hero", then The Mink is a fuckin' saint in comparison.
>>
>>95049784
It's much less of a shock, for sure
>>

TY
>>

that would have been much better

but of course why would anything good happen
>>
>>95049810
>>
>>95049740
Fuck, I want "You will be Avenged" on my tombstone.

>Beloved Stooge, Lost in Paraworld

Two lines that give more story than an entire trade worth of Bendis.
>>
>>95049205
really shitty my only two friends haven't picked up their phones in days so I have no plans whatsoever this weekend but being on this board
>>
>>95049746
That one is borked for me
>>
>>95049784
I'm really interested in the extent to which this a mirror desu. The original series never really unified. This is much better at unifying, but some things are changed up to be much less impactful (the whole domestic situation is given way less pressure and passion). But a contiguous villain, or at least antagonist, does a lot to keep the weird background stuff moving and connected.

>>

Not lately.
>>
>>95050080
It's absolutely pitch perfect, all of this

>>95050085
I wish Marvel would do this more often, giving a srs bzns lit person an off-beat collaborator and the keys to something unusual

I guess the DC equivalent of this is kind of Dial H, yes?
>>
>>95050093
>Literature, Pop Culture, and Robotics

Is Alexander going to build a breakdancing robot that quotes Emily Dickinson?
>>
>>95050113
Sure, and Dial H is itself a recommendation for this kind of project.
>>
>>95050113
When do they fuck?

I asked the same question of James-Michael and Amber.
>>
>>95050138
This is the only comic Lethem's done and there is a co-writer credited but man, he's got some good shit going on, full credit too to Dalrymple--I wonder how collaborative this all was? It's certainly not just "illustrating a script", we all know what that looks like
>>
>>95050173
>the humanities got funded

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

:(
>>
>>95050197
>>
>>95050220
>>
>>95050173
Some of these pages are novelist's pages. Like this one is >>95050113 with all the dialogue (as good as the half-sniping between prodigies is) but they keep the letters up and down so they can still show you the scene and Dalrymple keeps the background moving so the beat panel bottom middle works brilliantly (and you have a sense of time) too.

One of the things I really, really loved about that werewolf comic I posted (which I'm still in love with) is that although the top and bottom of the page were paralleled you actually know from little touches that the top is happening slower than the bottom. It's wild what people can do with comics, absolutely my fave goddamn thing in the world when people use construction like this.
>>
>>95050197
>>95050220
>Not sure if the robotic Robotics faculty is thematic, or an indication they are nano-infected Symbol Talkers.

Or, y'know, both.

Actually, wait, shit. That's Professor Chestbook, isn't it?
>>
>>95050093
Somehow I only just now noticed this, but I gotta give props for all the characters looking like normal ass people. The weird shit distracted from that a bit.

Note to all comics artists, this is how people look. Notice the lack of exaggerated supermodel physique. More of this please, you fucking hacks.
>>
>>95050252
It is!

>>95050251
I think it's fine to have a novelist page here and there as long as the dialogue is *good* and the art helps it flow. Just don't ever do that fucking Bennett page from her SW mini.
>>
>>95050251
Incidentally that page is a perfect example of where as a Bendis page it would be the worst thing in the fucking world, and Bendis would MAKE the artist make it be that bad.
>>
>>95050308
m-m-m-m-meta

Thanks for reading, if I don't end up passed out from a Day Out we'll be back tomorrow, if not, Tuesday
>>
>>95049545

Poor Simon is always suffering
>>
>>95050308
Sure, sometimes you're gonna be wordy. Just one last thing I wanted to say about that page and the beat panel is how good it is that Alex has already clasped the book and locked eyes? You absolutely know that happened *instantly* and then the pause but you don't need to SEE it happen.

Multiple anons ITT have talked about how characterful this book is, with a lot of personalities, and IMO a good hunk of the that is in the art.
>>
>>95050308
>Just don't ever do that fucking Bennett page from her SW mini.
???
>>
>>95050380
You're right, that's a masterful beat panel, that's what they're meant for.
>>
>>95050328

I think I may try to track this down in dead tree.

Thanks for posting as always, Storyteller.

Yeah, this book has me by the balls now. It's making me realize preferences I didn't know I had. I kinda like all this weird, vaguely spooky shit combined with a sober tone.
>>
>>95050308
At least this is a novelist that has adapted well to comics- Jodi Picoult and Brad Meltzer were both awful at it.
>>
>>95050428
>Bendis does a monologue.jpg

Although, I think, not enough copy pasted identical panels to create the illusion of effort.

Hahaha HOLY SHIT. WHYYY
>>
>>95050496
Because she needs to get in this lecture about being proud to be a mutant and hammering in the parallel to whatever real life oppression you want because it's virtuous
>>
>>95050518
At least put the speech bubbles in an X-shape or something so it's there visually as well. I've said before, but Bennett is a really indulgent writer sometimes to her detriment.
>>
also I have to say that if Brandon Graham is namesearching himself, hi

you scare me when you break the fourth wall :(
>>
>>95050570
