Appreciate it, I'll try to keep it on topic.

So the short of it is, it's about a 'war' of sorts over a mysterious energy that has a strong connection to the consciousness of humanity. The energy also has the ability to create sentient beings that are able to travel through peoples' dreams. No one truly understands the strange force, but its' power has drawn a lot of attention to it. Some characters are looking to take control for selfish reasons and are willing to do horrible things to get it, others seek it out to for more nefarious purposes. The story would focus on a small 'resistance' group of sorts of about four characters. Each character would have their own storyline before coming together to try and stop the war from destroying the entirety of human consciousness.

I took parts of this story from a webcomic I worked on in college, but the story's drastically changed from years ago. I've been keeping notebooks with me at home and work to scribble down any characters, plotlines, designs, etc.

>>
>>95013825
I've seen a lot of mysterious energy plots, phlebotinum that inexplicably connects to conciousness, and dream travel, but this has to be a unique combination of them. The idea that it CREATES conciousnesses weirdly knits together the less sensible parts of that.
I'm not sure I'm stoked that it's being folded into a resource-war and resistance story, but I wouldn't write it off entirely. Let's see a sample if you have any

>>
>>95012903

Yup it's a small little epilogue until we can get into the next arc
>>
>>95014451
Don't have any samples, but I'm up for discussion about other ideas/concepts I want to work into the story. Tulpas, psychedelics, and cults are also heavily a part of this story.

I'd been pondering about the origin of consciousness and imagination, so a lot of this story stemmed from that. I know it seems odd it veer towards a battlecentric story, but the more I started thinking about the Ether (a working name for the energy), the more I started thinking it was something people would absolutely be trying to take control of.

One character I have is the first woman to develop a consciousness, kept immortal by her strong connection to the Ether. She has a strong sense of ownership over the energy and has lived long enough to know some of it's most powerful secrets.
>>
>>95015059
I would definitely not go with ether. There are a million psychological and theological terms for conciousness, I'd pick one of those. What's it called in Gnosticism? That sucker is RIFE with great terms anyone can use.
I have to wonder what it would be like to manage to take control of something so ephemeral, and how one would actually hold onto it and what they'd use it for.. Definitely intriguing, I'll check it out, so keep us updated.
>>
>>95015121
Yeah I was fence sitting on that. I should probably commit to a better name now, otherwise it's gonna stick to me and it'll just feel weird to change it later. I just googled "Gnosticism and consciousness", holy shit do I have reading to do. Thanks for the tip.

I'll update again with some characters and plots later.
>>
>>95015259
looking forward to it
It's funny because I immediately thought of two franchises I really enjoy that use ether as their special sci-fantasy fuel substance, and both of them had deep interesting mystical crap and imagery built in, but not strongly related to said ether. One of them used gnostic shit all over the place so that's how I thought of that. the other, all tao kinda shit.
What's really fucking weird is the first thing I think of whenever there's a scifi element connected to conciousness is fucking star trek of all things. They never really fully followed up on the ramifications of the solidly-established and strangely-quickly-accepted fact that warp fields were related to thought

We meant to have 3 pages, but my artist lives in Texas and the weather hasn't been very nice there (fortunately he wasn't directly in the path of the tropical storm so he didn't have to evacuate, he just had a lot of rain).

The theme is magic + inventors (Alice is a prodigy of the white way and invented her own style of magic).

It still tales a story even without the third page.

What do you guys think?

Guys, I really want to make comics and learn to animate. What degree would I have to go into to learn this? I want this so bad.
>>
Has anyone here ever drawn something for others people, only to later see that they have made changes to your art without consulting you?
I sometimes draw characters for family, and I'm not always happy that they change my art or copy my drawings to use elsewhere. Maybe Its selfish, but I just don't like the idea of people editing or changing my art.
>>
>>95020160
Sequential art and animation respectively. Keep in mind you usually can only find those degrees at art schools, and that you dont need an art degree to be good at art or get an art job.
>>
Okay, so I'm making a romance comic and I need advice. I'm not sure if I should end the story shortly afterwards the couple gets together, or if I should include another more plot-focused story arc after the main characters hook up. My reason for wanting the more plot-focused story arc is because I want to show how the couple work together now that their relationship changed, as well as to give the individual characters some more growth. My main concern is that the extra arc will bore readers, since the main focus of the story, the romance, would have already been resolved at that point. Thoughts?
>>
>>95020820
Maybe you should focus on writing a story with a beginning, middle and ending instead of worrying about genre definitions.

But for real, if you think a romance is "over" because two characters get together, you're writing a shitty romance.
>>
>>95020944
Mang I literally just said I wanted to continue the story after the romantic arc was resolved to further developing character's relationship.
>>
>>95020820
I'd suggest that you make it omake or a proper sequel, rather than the final chapter of a story with a different focus. That is, make sure that if a reader decides to not read on after the characters get together, they're not gonna feel like there are major plot threads unresolved.
>>
>>95020568
Get over it faggot
>>
>>95021160
Oh, I don't mean just adding an extra chapter. I intend the arc to be about 3-4 chapters, and take up maybe a third of the story. If I were to do the arc, I'd want to set it up and lay hints for it from early on, and since I'm still in the early chapters of the story I need to decide if I want to go with this arc or not.
>>
>>95021274
In that case it's hard to speak in generalities - the question becomes about how well it meshes with the main plot of the story.
>>
>>95015825

Bland boring comic thats impossible to read or care about, with boring bland generic characters that dont matter, also annoying colors.

That's a fair assessment. I was trying to go for more of an atmospheric piece with that issue and the characters were obviously supposed to be robotic, but I really don't think I succeeded on either front. Tbh, I'm taking all the criticism I can take. I draw as a hobby outside of work and school, so any and all pointers help.

>impossible to read
I had a feeling this would be the case, the whole holographic/cyber-text vibe likely wasn't a good approach.

Specifically the atmospheric colors, like the red glows? Or does this extend to the character designs as well?

I mean, criticism is criticism. It's better than getting the usual "I like it" crap from everyone else I know.

But yeah, I'll definitely need to work on text contrast. I like experimenting with character speech, mostly because I find bubbles to be boring.

Here's another example of something I'm talking about:
>>
>>95021818
Bones is a shitposter, he's not going to give you substantial advice because he's here for giggles.

That said, your four most obvious issues are color, depth, linewidth and composition. You're using neon lights in dark areas despite not having a sense for lighting or color theory. I'd honestly suggest stepping back and letting someone else handle colors until you have some sense foe the fundamentals. You're having some issues conveying depth as well, most notably in your figures. That's just going to take practice, but you can opt for simpler angles in your pages while you practice. Related to that is your near-uniformly thick lines. I encourage you to go read some black and white comics in several different genres to get a sense for how thick and thin lines alter how a piece or art is viewed. Flipping through the 100s in Cerebus, checking out some Zot, maybe even pursuing a wide variety of manga. Finally...your composition leaves a lot to be desired. I'd recommend reading the basics, like Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, maybe some 1960's Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby, and some contemporary books like I Kill Giants to get a better grasp on how your panels flow and interact.

Basically...double down on the basics!

>>

Maybe, but criticism isn't always constructive criticism.
Also it's bones. You can't trust it even if he meant well. He can't teach you anything because he doesn't know better.

Just think about what makes the story good. You have to have conflict and resolution, yeah, but it doesn't have to be the romance that has already been resolved. It could be something else. How they're going to get a place together, the difficulties in that, how they get over their early serious fights, etc
a movie like Fatherhood or Father of the Bride always good as an example, because it was slice of life before slice of life was a thing, but managed to have no particular pace ands till keep you interested all along

*Colors: I'm no expert, but your characters and the environment seem disconnected. The first half has a dusty background that's so overwhelming that the scene is meant to be dark and brown from the whipping sands...but the purples and reds are still highly saturated for some reason. It doesn't look like they're glowing either, it's just garishly purple and red despite even the rest of Mr. Purple Textbox's body practically shouting "It is a bit dark and brown in this scene." The other part has the near opposite problem, where it looks like you just slapped a coat of red on him and went "yeah that works."

*Panels: It's probably because your comic is so vertical, but all you really got going on is two even panels or one wide panel per row. It isn't varied enough for the changes to have an impact, but it lacks the consistency of uniformity as well.

Tbh I wouldn't hate CF's pedovibe work as much if he just up and admitted it was his fetish instead of calling anyone who dislikes his wank material a prude who can't understand "innocent nudity"
>>
>>95024517
Wait, when did I deny it was my fetish?
It's just not something that comes up in my comic. I cover that shit in my non-comic work.
And for the contest entry, for god's sake there was a really obvious spot for an upskirt here that I could have taken if I was going that way, but I wasn't. Because this story is about a magician's apprentice. Now if she was like 3-4 years older and the story was about falling in love with her wizard sensei who was not a 12-ton rock creature, then yeah maybe it would fit the vibe. Shit, that actually sounds like a good idea.
>>
>>95024612
oh wait, I can think of a perfect example of when it WAS used in the comic, as a joke. That time when I wanted to reference Tale of Genji, while bringing back 2 characters. The joke that he seemed a little too close to his adopted daughter and his name turned out to be Genji and shit like that. That was supposed to be mildly awkward and funny, particularly because the last time we saw the girl she was a villain. But mostly just a reference.

Just saying.

The no-vagina thing always bugs me when it comes up. Like especially if it's a mermaid or something. Everything* has a vagina, it's just a question of whether it's serving double duty as your anus
*except extremely simple animals that just vomit everything up out of their mouths

In the case of the alien I'd just ask how the hell they reproduce, and give it a shot. Something must come out of somewhere, right?

and

>>95019084
>>95019116

and even though its by Cold "Pedo King" Fusion we got

>>95014192

Which makes three. We actually have a contest now.

We might have 4 entries if someone else enters before the day is out.
>>
>>95024982
Coldfusion if you actually bothered to act semi-professional and not REEEEE whenever someone posts at you people might warm up to you.
>>
>A comic about fighting in a semi-realistic world
>One of the four main characters is based on anime tropes

>"My friends are my power!"
>"I'll only use 45.8% of my true power!
>"Let me explain to you my punch I just threw"
>Let me scream to power up"

In reality he's just a major weeb that has an above-average reaction time and natural potential that adopts anime personas to make himself more confident. He's often shown to be(and occasionally failing at) going out of his way to try to make things look more cool than they are to the bewilderment of onlookers. Learns that usually the world doesn't follow or care about his anime-based actions and sometimes uses those to trick or fake out the enemy. He's able to pull off being a cool guy with varying degrees of autism that may or may not be ironic. Also he's vaguely asian.

I need a name for this guy. I was thinking of

>A.) A made up name that sounds vaguely asian but is from no distinct region, possibly a play on words regarding anime

and/or

>B.)A name that sounds like a special attack from a fighting game

I've come up with names like Shoren Shinryu but I can't quite get one that I like
>>
>>95025890
That's actually pretty durn clever. Not only would it make him more confident, it might intimidate his foes, if it doesn't make them laugh so hard that they can't fight.
I would go with a name that combines extremely common name-parts. Like it should end in -taro but it should start with something equally ubiquitous and generic. Ichitaro or something. Except that sounds bad
>>
>>95025759
>Magic comic contest

No thanks
>>
>>95025890

Give him a generic Shonen name like Jiro, Hiro, Joe, etc.

He needs several different power forms and a running joke where he forgets which one is which.

"Ha! Now to transform into Ultra-Knight Golden...I mean Hyper-Knight Golden!"
>>
>>95025935
Coward or uncreative?
>>
>>95025973
>"My name is Ichigo-no-Ichiro! I'm the number one of all time!"
>"Doesn't that mean #1 strawberry?"
>"IT'S NUMBER ONE OF ALL TIME!!"
>>
>>95026174
Bingo. Make him a fun character but with flashes of nobility. He's goofy, but he has a heart of gold and refuses to let his friends down or let the bad guys win.
>>
>>95026224
whenever he japs it up he'd use all the rude personal pronouns and crap
and on the occasions when he met actual people from japan, he'd wonder why they're treating him like he's being so rude instead of being cool
>>
>>95026224
Out of the 4 friends, he's actually the worst person.

>Doesn't take training seriously and relies on his natural talent
>By far the most self-centered, to the point where it becomes a detriment to the group
>Is the strongest in the group most of the time yet always relies on his friends to bail him out of trouble.

His personal character arc revolves around his power-level gradually dropping off as his friends and everyone else start to pass him up him learning the importance of hard work and gaining enough real self-confidence that he doesn't have to have an unhealthy reliance on pretending to be anime characters he thinks are cooler than he is.

Anyways, I'm still brainstorming the name but I'm also thinking about an english name that is very close to a japanese name. Close enough that he could've just started calling himself that in school and it eventually just caught on
>>
>>95026367
In that case, Joe does work well. It's a perfect anime name cliche and it's a totally believable anglophone name
>>
>>95026326
>>95026174
>>95026224

I haven't thought of that actually. Him meeting a native-born japanese that's disgusted by his weeb status could be a pretty entertaining and appropriately-cringey scene.

Reminds me of another idea I had where his weeb ways betrayed him

>Bad guy finds a picture of a girl in his wallet
>Bad guy uses girl as hostage
>Johnny McWeeb tells his friends that the girl in the photograph is actually his childhood friend who promised him that she would marry him when they were both infants that he just never told them about
>Tries to hide his identity as they save her
>Is ultimately revealed that the girl doesn't even know him and he's just a creeper who has a crush but was always too nervous to talk to her so he stole/took a picture of her without her noticing and kept it in his wallet

And thus, the first time his anime persona gets completely 100% destroyed.
>>
>>95026543
The way I see it, that girl (or any other genuine jappo) would be too polite to say anything, so his little world would continue undamaged
>>
>>95026692
A japanese person might be too polite to say anything, but he still has enough awareness to feel awkward. The girl idea is more about getting caught in the lie in front of both his friends and the girl herself
>>
>>95026894
Oh okay so he's not fully full-on deluded.
>>
>>95026543
It sounds like an interesting idea for a story, but you'd have to be careful writing it so that he doesn't come off as TOO creepy.

Have it so that they're friends but far from close friends. Because taking a picture of a girl without her noticing and carrying it around as a token of his waifu is extra creepy.

Hey guys, I'm bouncing around an idea for a comic about WW2. I've always been interested in it as a subject but I want to really research it intensely for this project. I'm curious if any of you know of any visual resources for things like uniforms, weapons, vehicles, etc. I can search things on google images but I don't really trust that for finding accurate reference for a lot of that. Also, I've arranged a few interviews with some vets from the local American Legion. I want this comic to be as accurate and true to life as possible and while documentaries and books tend to give a lot of information over the course of the war and how it played out, I want more info on the small visual details, things that normal media doesn't necessarily show you. Thanks ahead of time, any info would be greatly appreciated.

Oh also if anyone knows some other good comics set in WW2 I'd love to check them out. The only one I've read is Maus and while it's a really great book it doesn't really focus as much on the war.
>>
>>95035367
>I don't really trust that for finding accurate reference for a lot of that

>>
>>95035428
Unfortunately I never knew any of my grandparents. Like I said, I'm gonna be talking to some vets, and while I'm hoping they can tell me a lot about how things were, I still need visual resources. I've seen a few images from the Men at Arms books and those seem like they'd be helpful for uniforms but I don't know of any pdf's of them and unfortunately the library near me doesn't have any of them. I also need some good reference images of vehicles.

Panel 1 Dialogue 2 is right up against the panel border; nudge it left a little. Needs a crossbar-i at the start.
Panel 3 Dialogue 2 also needs a crossbar-i in "I needed".
Panel 4, centre the dialogue.

Suggested dialogue adjustments (note line breaks):

That last bit of pain was to give you
what you always wanted...

To be a magical girl forever...

Yeah there's a constant struggle inside me between the nerd who wants to point out "well actually" about six details on my characters that the fanartist interpreted properly, and the part that knows that's a douchey thing to do. The former wins once in a while
What one should do in that situation is consider making the designs clearer in the comic, so people wouldn't make that mistake.
>>
>>95042298
I think another issue you have is that you're not really looking at the picture.

It's like you're going off of an idea in your brain, but you're not seeing it on the paper and making adjustments. It looks bad because of this.

You need to continually ask yourself "Does it look good", and if it doesn't, make changes to see what will look better.
>>
>>95042298
It is daunting, isn't it?
But not all of us learn that same way. Some just learn by observation until we grasp the same basic principles in those guides.
>>
>>95042298
>>95042328
I think you've really got a lot of depth and form to your art, but it could easily be from eye-balling what feels right to you as an artist, and that leads to stagnation when others expect you to understand perspective.

It looks like it's all right, but some of the lines on it make me do a double-take because they don't really follow the over-all form.
>>
>>95042328
No, I just lack skill because I am taking caution and breaks during the process

>>95042341
I don't know how I learn, I just want to give up now
>>
>>95042398
The best way to learn is through experience and practice.

Draw some basic forms from life, and apply perspective to them.

I think you're just lacking in perspective and design, and that's killing you.

Those are 2 fundamentals you need to master, but perspective mastery comes first. It's the entire reason you can make a figure look correct.
>>
>>95042444
Post work
>>
>>95042398
>I just lack skill

Yet that's incorrect.
You lack aesthetic sense.

Your figures don't look good because you haven't analyzed the general shape of the figure and decided whether it's appeasing to the eye.

To give you a good example, it's like deciding whether you want to use a thin, thick, or wavy line to accomplish something. You choose the line that looks the best to you, and that's the best line for other human-beings.

It's the same thing when you're creating anything on paper. Whether it's a land-scape, or a house, or a warrior. You have to break-it down into things that look nice in order to have it be successful as a piece of art, and you're not doing that at all. It's a lot of time and effort that you're completely skipping because you picked up some fundamentals and probably forgot what you used to do before you ever started using them.

A good drawing looks good because someone looked at it and obsessed over what looked good to them.

Some people will have an easy time doing it, but some people might struggle with it as their brain is wired internally as opposed to externally.

That's what "talent" is when it comes to artwork.

The main reason you're not getting it is because you're not doing it right.

I advise you to learn all about how boxes rotate in perspective, and watch and observe how they affect everything in reality.

Everything in this world has 4 sides.

Everything is in perspective.

If you can rotate a box, you can rotate a fore-arm.

Once you know how to use forms in your artwork, you can draw like easily.

this is how arms work.png
141KB, 894x658px
>>95042846
This is good advice, but in practice, things don't have four sides, and it's really hard to apply these things to anatomy
Instead you have to learn things like how to draw cylinders in perspective. Sometimes all it takes is drawing a coiled spring shape and going around and around and around til it's the right thickness for the perspective in question
There's also useful things like this that use boxes and cylinders together, or even just sticks and circles
>>
>>95042982
You're right about things not having 4 sides, but, in my experience, each proper cylinder/sphere/pyramid is constructed from a box.
>>
>>95043035
It's definitely a good way to work if you can manage it
Also, if you can imagine a square moving through the box, and imagine just how big a hole in said square would have to be there, for the limb to fit through.. Yknow basically thinking about cross-sections. that helps. at least in deciding what angle you're looking at

I recommend you do the falling box off of the cliff exercise (The one marked number 6 in the picture I'm attaching), and study these tutorials I posted

BE SURE TO UNDERSTAND VANISHING POINT MOVEMENT BEFORE YOU START TRYING TO MAKE BOXES FALL OFF OF CLIFFS

Don't just look at them, put them into practice, or you won't understand and try making a circle of falling boxes (falling both UP and DOWN)

>>95042232
>>95042203

Then check out sketchfab if your computer can handle it, or even draw objects from life, and apply perspective to a figure using boxes.

Here's a good model to start with:

https://sketchfab.com/models/2ff06863e40541a1b029ee3a98e6b209

Also, be sure to understand gesture/figure drawing, and be sure to understand how shape affects your figure. I recommend Force by Mike Mattesi
>>
>>95043321
You probably won't understand everything about vanishing points and boxes right away, but I advise you to download some 3D software to run perspective experiments if you can.

It helps you to learn more faster.

Don't expect to be the box master right away.

I'm never gonna make it.

I'll just try my best for now but I still feel bad that I couldn't do better. And perspective is my weakest point since I never draw exteriors, landscapes or inmobile objects
>>
>>95044355
If you draw a human head, you need to do it in perspective.

I never draw landscapes or inmobile objects, but I do draw a lot of people, and I have to treat the human body like it's a structure just like anything else in the world when I do draw it in order to draw it successfully.

Boxes are they key, and until you learn to use them in perspective, you'll never be good at drawing because it's the only real way to recreate reality on paper.

We get one of those every other month. The last one was an antro-animal action comic with early disney cartoon aesthetic. Looked absolutely amazing, guy posted his concepts for a few weeks then disappeared never to be seen again.

Well I already do freelance work, and this is a passion project that I've wanted to do for a long time, but I'm just now finding the time to do it. The problem is that because I want it to be factually accurate I need to do a lot of research so it will probably take a long time until I get to a point where I can start producing pages. I'm determined to create it though, and I'm going to pace myself on the work with it to avoid burning myself out. A great project gets created by years of planning, work, and dedication, and I think a lot of people who have those great ideas end up expecting to see results quickly and they jump into production and realize they didn't plan properly and have to go back to planning and dump pages and get dissapointed.

>>
>>95048696
Some people just want to see the world burn

And artist aside, the comic is not half bad tbqh, it's decent for a one-page little gag.
>>
>>95048696

although i didnt read it it was a fun comic it was like a scene out of a cartoon and it all just kind of worked compared to the other comics which where really basic in its visual story telling ability to convey action and motion, the other comics where very basic and just following the theme instead of bringing it to life in an almost animated way the way coldfusion did, just saying lol
>>
>>95048696
the important thing is the best one is in first. we knew that one was going to win anyway even if it was less cut and dry than the last few times.

Thanks for the corrections. Sometimes when you are in a hurry you make odd mistakes, and also sometimes the lettering process is you changing your mind over and over about what the dialog should be- and it can end up mush if you aren't careful enough.

There was also layer order mistake in the first panel, with the white eye shape over the ink layer, covering up the redhead's eyes.
>>
I was thinking of putting the rest of my comic in Black and White so I could get it out faster. I'd try to keep the values and everything just making it monochromatic. Should I do it or would it be too jarring to the reader? I'm about 70 pages in. Pic related.
>>
>>95045487
To mention a positive reason, maybe artists are more likely to draw for someone worse than them because the receiver is more likely to appreciate it. I know I've drawn art before for people as good or better than me and they either didn't respond or barely said anything.

>>95047585
While I've had a lot of webcomics that didn't have endings, I did finish one once. The host for it doesn't exist anymore though, so it's not online now. I hope that the comic I"m currently making will have an ending. I know what the ending will be already.

ive completed several short stories and chapters.

see i treat every chapter like its own separate project becuase i plan to keep each of my 4 projects going on forever so once i complete 1 chapter thats like 1 project completed. if that makes since to anybody....

ALSO working on a new page now, but its super big with lots of shit going on and backgrounds and stuff, the next three pages i digitally penciled out in chicken scratch form have a lot of panels to them and very little word balloons because i want to convey a lot of stuff going on in just 3 pages

Interesting story! Is she going to end up fighting the other girl?

I love the ruins, and I like the weird incongruous look with the girl wearing a schoolgirl uniform and a helmet. She looks like something from a Suda 51 game.

I feel like it could have been compressed in a few places, and design wise I feel like she looks slightly too school girl. I mean I get what you're trying to do but maybe it could look a little more ragged and worn? It looks too perfect for the setting.

It's still very neat. Do you have a website for your work?

I think more people care about the contests than you think. You have to remember there's always a gap between views and replies/participation. Just look at any youtube video and compare views to likes/dislikes or comments. The responses will always be a tiny fraction of the views.

I do stuff on /qst/ and it's a very noticeable phenomena that often discourages new game masters who see that they're getting 1-3 replies and think only 1-3 people are reading their quest.

These challenges have been pretty helpful in getting me off my ass and at least practice comicking instead of just thinking about it. But I understand that most people here who already spend what little free time they have on their own projects most likely don't have time to participate. I think it's a really nice push for those of us who want more practice and get some exposure for feedback.

Currently the Ghoulquest threads. You know the /co/ spooktober threads? That. They're shameless waifu quests but I have fun running them and my playerbase is great, I get like 20+ players per thread.

I've done others. Slasherquest about being a movie slasher villian, Statesmen quest (which I'm bringing back soon to tie into the website, the Statesmen are a superhuman organization in the Capeworld universe), Mechagirl quest about being a gynoid gladiator (and also 200 percent magical realm)-its where I met my artist by the way, and Bioarmor quest based on 90's anime OVAs like Guyver and Genocyber.

Tanis Quest is next in line where we play as a black magician based on Alister Crowley who has to protect the Egyptian afterlife, should be fun.

So, I have been working on an idea for a comic for the better part of the year and I wanted to ask your OPINION /co

Do you feel like the comic being FURRY detracts too much from an interesting story? To be perfectly blunt I ask this because I've drawn a lot of furry art, I have a decent furry following, and if I tried to make a comic with human characters they would probably look like shit because I don't enjoy drawing people much, therefore they likely wouldn't get too much effort put into them.

Thumbnail related for my general ability to draw furry characters.

I am ready to start the comic, and I've seen furry comics do well enough, but at the same time I seem them usually mocked. Is it really because they are furry, or because they are furry AND have shit stories?

I think I have an interesting plot and I'd prefer to draw things I enjoy. Anyway, feel free to shit on me, but if you wanna answer honestly I'd appreciate it.

I hate it when people keep asking that. I swear the only time I ever see the supposed taboo on furry mentioned is when people are like 'hey is it okay if this has furries in it?'
Just erase the concept from your mind. Furry isn't a thing.

>>
>>95053477
The more humanized the furry characters are, the more I avoid the media, specially if they have tits.
>>
>>95053450
It's fine. Furry will always get mocked, but if you can have a good story with it, it should do well. Appealing art is always a plus, even if furry. Some people do it well, some don't. I think yours is done well enough to attract a wide audience.

Don't worry about it, just push ahead.
>>
>>95053541
I didn't mean to bite your head off, but it has been asked so many times, and I'm convinced the caution is the only reason the taboo exists
>>
>>95053450
if you really dont want the stigma of furries, then just dont mention them being furries. just pretend like its completely normal in the comic. most people probably wont even pay attention to the fact that they're furries, until you start acknowledging it. keep it unnoticed
>>
>>95053589
No, its not something that would come up in the comic at all. Its not a comic that is self aware and is "kawai we are furries owo", its more nochalant like Bojack.

No I understand, thanks for responding anyway!

>>95050077
Thanks, man. Its not as fancy as the stuff they use for the metal gear, its just a signal beacon. Even though the girl made a marker using the geo-location satellite thing she is holding, because the local area change so much from historical records, the balloon is just making it easier for the people who will come to recover the bodies. The thing she attached it to is just the handle of the machine gun for the machine gun nest dead solider setup.

>>95050484
My god, sounds like a great idea, I might expend on that in the future.

>>95049838
That was the idea for them to be rivals and also become friends. They are also characters in my current story, give or take 15 years. They are not just normal girls and mostly cyborgs, in the sequal I abandon they do look more ragged when they are a bit further into their missions.
>>
>>95053843
A it'll come to you. keep it in your head, keep sleeping, some morning it'll pop into your head
B motivations for other characters meaning what? tell us something, we can help
C just think about something that makes it possible to change your interaction with it. A way it can be enhanced, a way it can be stopped, etc. might help to think about other magic systems' rules and what you like and dislike about them

They are not salvaging the machine gun nest, its just a signal beacon and the balloon makes it easier for the recovery team to spot because there are a lot of high rise ruin in the area. The string keeps the balloon tethered.

As part of her mission, she also signal for recovery any remains of soldiers that she came across.

Looks OK. Blondie and Redhead in panels 5 and 6 could probably do with a few minor highlights (eg on the hair and the bridge of the nose). Just enough to pop them out from the background, but not as much as Blue and Meganekko, to keep them the focus of the panels.

P1 "I have already found..." is now too far left; it's hitting the cloud lines. Nudge the position of those particular lines towards the left a little bit, and move the text back towards the right, so it's got a little bit of breathing room all round and it's not touching the panel borders or cloud lines.
P3 Space and double-dashes at the end of "All I needed --"
Still missing some crossbar-i's and "THE last bit" in P4.

What, if anything, do webcomics have to do differently from regular comics to do well? Like, the obvious ones are keeping to a regular update schedule and having a navigable website. But is there anything else?

I was thinking that maybe webcomics are better off being more character than plot driven, since it's easy to loose track of complex plots when you're following a story over a long period. Characters on the other hand grow more familiar when you keep coming back to them over long periods, so if they're done well they'll keep the reader's interest. Of course plot's still important, but I don't think it should be the main focus. Maybe that's just me though.
>>
>>95058899
My comic is called Juneau. It's about girl (named Juneau) being randomly selected to have universe busting powers and is using those powers to save the Galaxy from bad guys. Most of it is supposed to be satire on comics with parody characters of comic heroes and villains. (Ex. Paralactus being Paralax/Galactus). I don't want the plot to be too deep or crazy. Just pretty linear adventures of Juneau and her cohorts going on an adventure to save the universe. This is the first official (to me) comic I've made and I wanted to kinda grow with this, get better at storytelling and art. I have a project for a later time that I've been thinking about for... 10 years now? But my goal is to be 100x better than I am now to do that.

Anyone else create characters that are too similar too each other? Just realised that two of my female characters I'm planning too include fall under the tomboy category so I might have too change that up a bit. I don't really know many woman so I guess I fall back on hobbies and things I enjoy, instead of more things woman might enjoy over men.
>>
>>95062049
Being sporty is too close for you? Because just being tomboy is pretty broad.
>>
>>95062091

Well one is kind of a sporty type, and the other one is kind of nerdy and likes comic books. So maybe they are differant enough.
>>
>>95062133
It's fine to consolidate characters if you think they're too similar or don't have enough purpose, but you should stay your hand if it's something as vague as an archetype.

Nothing screams "fake" as loud as a cast with zero overlap...usually.
>>
>>95062049
As a girl, my guy characters are kind of the same. Anyway, if you're writing a dramatic story, just give them a key event, for example, maybe they go ruin someone's party on purpose, if you have a couple key traits (eg : trouble working in teams, picks fights, etc.), and a key event (or two), it kind of writes itself.
>>
>>95062133
Those aren't even necessarily tomboy traits.
Ballet, gymnastics and horseback riding are all pretty classic girl interests that still require a shit ton of athleticism, and while superhero comics aren't particularly aimed at girls, manga has a huge female audience.

Even if you do make them both tomboys, they can still have different approaches to femininity outside of that. I've known a bunch of women firefighters, and they run the gamut from skinhead lesbians to ordinary soccer moms when they're not on duty.

I have a hard time putting it in words.

She is one of those "doesn't look her age" type, who is much older than most characters in the story. She separates people between what she considered "children" and "adults", and have different expectation for them. She always speaks in a sort of gently condescending way to people she considered children, but she is generous and kind to them. However she doesn't respect their opinion and tend to butt into their personal business, misguided or not.

She's been through some hard times in her formative years so she likes to feed people. A lot of times when people comes to her with problem her solution is just to stuff their face with delicious food. Sometimes, she can be a bit of prick, she likes to poke at people who certain hang ups if she spots them.

She is much more serious when dealing with magic side of things, because that's where a lot of "people of her age" is coming from, but also pose much more of a threat to everything she is working on.

... I don't know if this is what you are looking for. Its kind of nebulous what I wanted out of her in terms of personality, what I have in my head is more like a series of images and scenarios in which she reacts a certain way.

Basically everything "between" violet and red is.

>Purple, unlike violet, is not one of the colors of the visible spectrum. It was not one of the colors of the rainbow identified by Isaac Newton, and it does not have its own wavelength of light.

This is why purple is my favorite color.
>>
>>95069529
>a missionary
What? No. There's cities, and governments, and multiples cultures and religions with a lot of history in africa. not just slavery and huts. We have little use for missionaries where I was born.

My mom is white, born and grew up in the capital same as my dad who's also native from there. I was born there too and raised by my mom until I was 11, then my dad, both in the same city. I went to France, and Belgium or Switzerland to see the family members on my mom's side every year, so that plus tv helped with the culture mixing.
>>
>>95069459
I mean, it's not a guess, it's just the complete spectrum
it just so happens that while color is a circle, light has wavelength, so there had to be a 'cutoff point' and it happens to have included a section of the color wheel. it's fascinating in its own way

what's weird to me is finding out that the additive and subtractive color wheels aren't actually totally reversed from each other, it's just that the subtractive one darkens while the additive one lightens. it makes sense once you internalize that a lotof the 'browns' you get from mixing secondary colors are actually dark oranges or yellows
>>
>>95069552

"Radiolab rips the rainbow a new one."
Kek. not sure why the title on this one kills me so much. maybe its cause the description is basically the same.

okay those people sound either retarded, colorblind, or their grass was fucking dry and dead... and maybe their sheep were constantly bleeding, and maybe they bled so much it made the sea wine colored...

I took a trip to visit a friend up in Rhode Island recently. Drew up some stupid shit about it.

I know I fucked up the accent, it was hard for me to get it down.

Went to Florida recently, I can say the same thing about Southerner's driving abilities.
>>
>>95070327
Florida, yeah, probably. I'm from VA. Worst I can say is we have a tendency to drive 20mph over the limit at all times.

New England drivers... are different. Maybe it was just because I was in a city, but it was noticable. I've driven in Boston before and it was intense to say the least.
>>
>>95070362
Yeah. I live in Western Mass where its pretty quiet. My town is just old people really.
>>
>>95070289
Where do you have to come from for frozen lemonade to be an unusual food? They have them here in the Southwest too.

It's not like English lacks terms describing more than one color; cool colors, warm colors, earth tones, etc.
And remember, you can subdivide colors - just like english red can be be pale, deep, yellowish, purple-ish etc, if your language has one word that describes both the blue and green colors of english, you can usually say something like "aoi like the sky" or "aoi like the grass" when you need something more specific.

>>95070287
Well, Greek didn't have a lot of different color terms at the time so they had to make do.
>>
>>95070454
I'm from VA-- mentioned it in an earlier reply.

It's just never really come up in my life, honestly. Maybe there's a spot nearby but I've never found it. My friend was astounded, and completely failed to describe what it was like to me. I thought it was like a slushie at first and he was absolutely emphatic that it was nothing of the sort. It was an ongoing argument for, like, months.

Eventually I drove my ass up there and had it and now I can comfortably say that it's like the bastard child of a sno-cone and a slushie. Good shit, honestly.

Hey thanks guys! It was fun. So I get to choose the theme? I had an idea for a short story involving giants, so how about that? It could be giant people, monsters, whatever you like!

How do we roll for the genres, does anyone have the chart?
>>
>>95070488
I can understand aoi being the color of copper oxide for a language developing around the bronze age or whatever, but how the hell you gonna have the same color for wine and water? unless it meant 'clear' and their sheep had really shitty thin wool
>>
>>95070639
That's a hell of a good theme
>>
oh that's right I said I'd make the new thread
is it okay if i make it now? i'd rather not wait for page 10, i've got shit i've gotta go do

Giants, nice!

>>95070639
Not sure where the chart is. The anon that organizes the challenges usually has it.

>>95070913
Thanks, I should warn you though my quests aren't for everyone. Don't go into the ghoulquests threads unless you like /co/'s spooktober threads. (Although if you are into that sort of thing then welcome aboard!)
>>
wheres the new thread?
>>
>>95064156
i would have voted for you if i had even realized this thing was going on sorry. i loved the lava comic you made and i love seeing your stuff on my dash
>>

man, this thread survived a long time. Maybe that janitor had a point. I didn't realize a thread on page 7 on a saturday night would still be on page 9 an hour later.
pologize for calling you a fag, yanni. I mean, there's nothing wrong with having two threads up when one is past bump limit.. but..
>>
