It's a long shot since, on one hand, animated films that aren't made in Japan or made by Disney/Pixar have usually bombed in Japan, especially if it's DreamWorks.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 was actually released direct-to-video there, and Kung Fu Panda 3 was a Netflix exclusive, because of the sheer unpopularity of non-Disney animated films.

There are some miraculous exceptions like Illumination's films (for some reason), Ferngully, Thumbelina and Anastasia, which managed to do well in Japan despite not being from Disney, Pixar, Illumination or some Japanese anime studio.
But only time will tell if Ballerina will become one of those films.
Also, The Peanuts Movie managed to do well because Peanuts is really popular in Japan.

While on the other hand, Carly Rae Jepsen is really popular in Japan to the point that some of her songs, as well as a music video, were Japan-only.
Her latest full album, E-MO-TION, was actually released in Japan months earlier than the rest of the world.
It was a huge success in Japan while it bombed horribly in most other countries.
It was still critically acclaimed and is a cult classic, though.
And because Carly Rae Jepsen has two new songs for Ballerina, maybe the Japanese will go watch this movie for said songs.

And the number of many other pop songs in the movie may attract Japanese audiences too.

This is actually my favorite non-Japanese foreign animated film from last year. And my fourth favorite foreign animated film of last year behind In This Corner of the World, Your Name. and The Red Turtle.

If you don't like the English dubs, watch the French version (with subtitles if you need them), but the French Blu-ray has no subtitles, there is a torrent circulating in some Russian websites but either the audio is out-of-sync (either the French version or Canada English dub but not both) or the subtitles are out of sync (easy to fix), if they do have English subtitles.

Also, all the English subtitles I found for this movie are dubtitles based on the UK dub, fansubs aren't in circulation but the dubtitles generally do a decent job if you don't speak French.

It feels like a Disney wannabe kinda like Anastasia but it also has a very Ghibli-esque feel to the movie akin to Ghibli's own Kiki's Delivery Service while feeling distinctly French.
The pop songs, especially the Carly Rae Jepaen ones, feel Ghibli-esque for some reason and I actually like them.
The animation also looks really great and on-par with Disney at times.

I really recommend this movie.

Theater I work at has an IMAX screen, so over here we're also going to be playing the first two episodes of a TV show that everyone else can watch at home in four weeks. Also Wonder Woman got brought back for some reason.

At least we packed two auditoriums for Mayweather-McGregor on Saturday night, even with single ticket prices boosted up to $40 for that event. Not getting Leap, though, that got sent off to a smaller theater downtown.

The ballet instructor is not there to give "tips" to girls in a ballet class. He's there to teach them how to do the fundamentals of ballet and then reinforce those fundamentals for years until they have built up enough strength, stamina and muscle memory to move on. Dancing on your own doesn't teach you the positions of ballet, where to place your feet, your spine, your arms, your chin, etc, in each position. It doesn't teach you how to properly flex your feet in ballet. It doesn't teach you how to dance en pointe properly (if you've built up the strength to do so safely) or do fouettes or pirouettes and so on. A girl who just joined a ballet class and whose only experience dancing is doing it wildly on her own would never out-perform girls who were in the class for years.

The film was refreshingly realistic at first, showing how Felice was dancing in a "mimic" of ballet, and the things she had to learn were fairly on point (no pun intended) in terms of learning the positions, learning that you need control ove ryour body, that you don't just "jump" in ballet, you have to move and land in a very specific way, etc. It's just that she learned it in a few hours, over the course of less than a week, rather than over months or years.

But, the entire film is unrealistic when it comes to the ballet portion, from the show being performed to the casting process to the style of ballet being shown, so it's not surprising.

Honestly? I watched it, and the biggest problem I had was that Leap just tried to tell too much story in too little time. There were a lot of parts where it felt like the movie should be building up some atmosphere or drawing out a scene, but instead just quickly jumped forward to the next bit. At its core, Ballerina's message is one that champions hard work, perseverance, and passion, which is more humanist than mainstream US cartoons where one merely needs to be born a royalty, or with magic or some divine providence. Unfortunately, it doesn't go far enough with it, never exceeding what is expected of a kid's cartoon.

It's further diluted by not one, but two unnecessary romantic plots, and a preposterous villain whose motivation is never meaningfully justified. I couldn't help but think that the movie would have been far more interesting had it been told from the viewpoint of Felicie's rival, whose inner turmoil and struggles are sufficiently dark enough to make these kinds of sports stories work.

It is closer to a hidden gem than a dud. Some aspects of the story seem less contrived with repeated viewings, mainly because the direction is so straight-forward that there's no emphasis on what should be notable scenes. But most reviews of the film's visuals are unfair. It trades flash for grace, with solid design and good cinematography throughout. It's been two decades since Toy Story, and it's time we start judging CGI films by film standards, and no how many characters and effects it can throw onscreen.
