I think it's more or less the way he was drawn. For some reason the artists at Sega exaggerated the size of his quills, his smile and eyes. Really, Tails' design stuck for so long because it felt similar to Sonic while still having unique design choices compared to him. It's aimed at a very niche group of people who have nostalgia for games like Sonic Heroes and that nostalgia carries over years later and blinds them to the very obvious flaws in the Modern Sonic of today.

Look, I hold no ill will to these people. Actually, I feel bad for them. Sonic Team shat out so many mediocre games that most Modern fans have to resort to clinging to the characters and story instead, rather than the actual gameplay itself. And even those two things often require a heavy amount of "fanon" to become even remotely appealing.

Essentially, I think a lot of Modern fans are experiencing a strange form of Stockholm syndrome after years of being slapped around by Sonic Team, and go to great lengths to find anything even remotely resembling quality in those games. They then inflate said quality in an attempt to prove "Classicfags" wrong about how lackluster Modern Sonic really is. Most arguments for Modern Sonic games start out with "Well, it's not AS bad as people say..." or, "It's not great, but it DOES have some redeeming qualities..." To Modern fans, ask yourselves these questions: Is that how you want to describe your favorite franchise's games? Are you okay with settling for less just so you can hear your favorite characters spout memes and so you can soak up more material for your fanfiction? Do you actually enjoy 3D Sonic games where the main objective is to hold down the boost button while you dash through long stretches of nothing followed by menial platforming sections? Do you actually enjoy gimmicks that are specifically designed to distract you from the previous point?

Be honest with yourselves. Stop guzzling down whatever trash Sonic Team feeds you. You deserve better.

The problem is Sonic was made to be the hip counterpart to Mario. But what is hip changes overtime. At best, what was once hip becomes nostalgic and perhaps, decades down the line, become cool adjacent again. Mario was never cool, but he was supposed to be.
