The entire show has these writing inconsistencies that reveals it's planned direction but feels unconvincing.
Keith is going to grow into a good leader - yet he's pointed out to have potential without setting an example for it.
Pidge develops a bond with Shiro due to his connection to her brother - yet it's completely dropped until she mentions missing him in S3, and you don't even see her reaction when they find "Shiro".
The reunion between the paladins and Kuron is toned down because he's not the real Shiro - it also reduces any emotional impact the revelation of a sleeper agent would have.

There's just a lot issues related to writing and pacing rather than the overall direction, which I think is fine so far.

that's not how it works, they have to get the writing approved by the suits FIRST thing, shit that's already in production isn't being changed. none of the interviews mention them having to go back and re-do things midway, only that their initial plans wouldn't

I get the feeling that the only ship that will happen will be Shiro/Romelle whereas Keith/Allura will just be teased at. Sven and Romelle were hinted to be dating in DotU. Keith and Allura had a lot of cute moments in the series but they never actually get together until the DotU sequels.
