I think the show clearly wants people to laugh or recoil at first, then trails philosophical underpinnings to keep them from feeling they wasted their time.

However that scene where Xavier is on the phone with himself is eons beyond Rick & Morty.

This show is a great plebian filter.

And the scene that probably bothered me the most was the Drug/Mascot episode where the kid finally breathes and takes in a shitload of meth.
It's hard to explain, but a lot of it has to do with the show's sound effects. It does a really good job of accentuating these scenes with bizarre noises.
