Niiiiiiice. I definitely think we should have seen the black battle gear as the wartime armor instead of the clone trooper bits and bobs we got in CW and TCW. How did the Jedi get those anyway, when the clones are all of identical proportion?

Another Thrawn novel is not confirmed at all. It's one anon larping about having a job where he can see future novels.

We already know Luke is getting a book, Canto Bight has a four-story collection of short stories, and the Certain Point of View book to close out the year. We might get some extra TLJ tie-in stuff released when the movie comes out, like Before the Awakening was for TFA, but that's unknown right now.

I know you're only meming but that's actually sort of canon. In the novelization of TFA Hux says that they must lie about what happened to Finn in fears that it will inspire more traitors and in TLJ we learn that the First Order told everyone that Finn was promoted to Captain.
>>

>>
>>94944680
I feel like if they try and emulate Vietnam with the whole 'soldiers know what they're doing is morally wrong and it doesn't fully hit them until later' thing. Like have a lot of these soldiers show signs of depression for the horrible things they've done and not thinking there's even an alternative to doing these horrible missions for the First Order (which I now realize also has pottery with Rogue One). Then when Finn becomes a huge figure in the Resistance they realize it's possible to atone for their actions and they join the Resistance en masse. You could even have some cool EU stuff where the First Order is trying to combat this by sending spy groups into the Resistance.

Post the year you were born and then post whether you ever went through an anti-prequel/anti-Lucas phase

1991

never bought into prequel or Lucas hate but I was slow to get on the TCW train because I saw some ugly looking theatrical cartoon and didn't give a fuck but then in like 2011 I flipped to Cartoon Network and saw badass clone wars shit happening and found my ultimate waifu of all time Ahsoka

>>
>>94945780
1995

I watched RLM prequel reviews and found them kinda funny around 2013, but I was enjoying TCW and couldn't shake the feeling that I still loved and respected the world Lucas built.

Bought the blu rays to watch the Saga again, and cried at the end of ROTJ. Realized RLM was full of shit and that Lucas is a very bold and creative man that deserves more praise than he gets. Didn't think there was anything significantly wrong with the prequels, or ROTJ.

So I didn't fully buy into RLM, but I did attempt to hear them out because "the internet is surely right about the prequels", but ultimately I came to my own conclusion; Fuck the internet, I like Star Wars.

Side note: also bought into the machete order for a little while, until I tried it with my sister and realized some things are only good on paper.

Worth mentioning that despite being born in '95, I actually started with the OT, in case anybody accuses me of having a nostalgic bias towards the PT/Chronological viewing order. One of my oldest memories is being transfixed by the Trench Run. After watching ANH and ESB on tv, I would get my mum to rent out ROTJ and watch it over and over and over again until we had to take it back.

>Side note: also bought into the machete order for a little while, until I tried it with my sister and realized some things are only good on paper.
Yeah, I think most of the people who advocate machete order have never actually sat down and tried it. I think a lot of its popularity just comes from the fact that it omits TPM.

Born inn 1985. Watched Star Wars for the first time in 1995 when they were released on VHS "One last time"

I have hated George Lucas ever since he re-released the special editions as just THE EDITIONS in 2000 on VHS. I never liked the SE and when Lucas essentially replaced the originals with the newer versions I couldn't believe that he would basically tell his fans, "This is the version you should like and if you don't, then fuck you."

When Lucas released the Blu-Ray's and pretty much cemented the fact that the original version will never see any better quality than a laserdisc I stopped purchasing anything related to Lucasfilm until they were bought by Disney.

>>

Dude, I love Rey but.....no.
>>
>>94946028
no offense but you sound like a faggot
>>
>>94945989
One of the biggest problems about watching out of chronological order is the jarring timeskips, and the machete order only overlooks that it's adding ANOTHER huge time skip into things unnecessarily.

But the main thing is that the whole "flashback" idea simply does not work in practice. You can't treat an entire movie as a flashback, let alone 2-3. By the time you get back to ROTJ, the stakes are deflated because you've lost the momentum of the story with Han, so it's actually detrimental to the OT experience, even moreso than it is to the PT.

If you really are a "show ANH first" purist, then just watch the OT, and then go back and marathon the entire Saga chronologically.

>>94946057
Machete Order was designed to "save" the Vader reveal by treating the PT as a flashback sequence.

4, 5, 1 (optional), 2, 3, 6.

Ultimately the idea falls flat by breaking the flow of both trilogies just to preserve a twist that everyone on the planet knows by now.

Not sure what order that is, but machete order is 4,5,2,3,6. Sometimes you'll see people include 1 between 5 and 2, but the creator of machete order considered it unnecessary to include 1.
>>
>>94946092

Can I ask why people have such a problem just watching them in the order they were released? It's not like anyone can claim that ANH does a shitty job of introducing an audience to Star Wars. It's not like people were utterly confused from 1977 until 1999 when TPM was released. What is wrong with telling the middle trilogy first, tons of people make great movies that are told out of order. PEople that claim the movies don't make any sense unless you watch them 1-6 are the same people that will only watch the cut of Pulp Fiction that is told in chronological order or the version of memento that is told from beginning to end.
>>

The bad news is that he's a complete fucking idiot.

Apparently Sam Witwer had fantastic luck showing his adult friends who had never seen Star Wars the following order: TCW, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6. The guy or two who watched it that way said they pitied the people who had to experience it in release order, they felt it was infinitely superior, but that's just a singular anecdote from Sam Witwer. I'm inclined to believe it though, however I have a tough time trying to insert Rebels and Rogue One in a sensible way
>>

never bought into AOTC or the clone wars shorts, this was before I seen the RLM unfunny reviews with the shit kidnaping jokes.

didn't care about the clones dying, for me they're just clones, if one clone dies 2 more will take their place but the Jedi on the over hand was more interesting,

I started getting all the EU books about the Jedi than the TCW came out and I got into that.

still, think rebel vs empire is better but that's just me.

After all 6 movies, the rise and fall of Vader, Luke's heartbreaking final confrontation, so much pain and tragedy and finally the Galaxy has a reason to Celebrate. I saw Episode IV at the Van Nuys drive-in in Los Angeles, and again at the Northridge Mall theater. It was fucking amazing.
I didn't like Episode I at all, because jar-jar and anankin were annoying and Maul's death was bullshit. He was too cool of a character to dust in his first appearance, convincing me that Lucas was a hack.
I liked Episode II because the pacing wasn't complete shit, the visuals were fun, jedi battle was amazing, etc. It had its faults but it was SUCH an improvement over 1, I figured Episode 3 would be a complete winner.
Well. To be honest, the actors did the very best they could with the script they were given.

Force Awakens was rehashed ass. Rogue One gave me real hope that the magic in the first 3 movies could be captured again and taken in a new direction. Oldfag out.

I spent my childhood loving everything Star Wars. I was introduced to the series through the prequels (even being reluctant to watch the originals, as young me dismissed them as "old"-of course I loved them too when I actually did it.) I didn't realize there was a lot of prequel/Lucas hate until I first went on the internet. That really blew my mind. I spent a bit of time being angry at anti-prequel stuff, before the sheer amount of it made me kind of decide they were crap and I'd just been a kid. Ironically, it was Darths and Droids (a webcomic whose basic premise is "fixing" the prequels through a Tabletop campaign) that made me realize that even if I did think they were flawed, I didn't buy into the over-the-top hate. Seeing stills from these movies I watched as a child, reliving them, made me realize I still loved them. Been a prequelfag ever since.

From what I recall, the only 100% CGI scene in the entire PT was the Geonosis Factory scene in Attack of the Clones. And even then, Lucas says, they wanted to use sets/miniatures, but the scene was added too late in production for it.

Besides that one scene, every single shot in the prequels makes use of on-set location shooting, practical sets, or at the very least, digitally inserted practical miniature sets.

Including all the otherworldly establishing shots.

>>94951031
u got tricked m8, its okay. It's "common knowledge" that the PT was all CGI thanks to misinfo spread by people like RLM.

It can be a shock when you see that the PT actually probably had more practical effects than the OT and ST combined. In fact I read somewhere that TPM alone had more practical effects than the entire OT.

They shot on location in Switzerland, Italy, Tunisia, and Lucas even sent a crew to film the real Mount Etna erupting for footage for Mustafar.

The PT does make use of CGI in a lot of places, but no more so than TFA did, but the amount of stuff in the PT that is practical is shocking. Like most of Kamino, and Coruscant. Pretty much every interior shot in Coruscant scenes is practical, and all the external shots of the buildings are practical too. The CGI was almost entirely just the landscape.
>>
>>94951140
They're assholes who can't actually back their arguments so they're rather make shit up than provide proof.

Bigger question is why did JJ buy into this meme so hard. It was clear that people inside Lucasfilm weren't happy with the "it was all CGI, we have REAL PRACTICAL EFFECTS" bullshit that was being pushed. The Star Wars Insider even put out an article highlighting a lot of the practical effects work of the prequels after that stupid sizzle reel just because of how huge the misconception had gotten.
>>
>>94951140
Because its not just about having an opinion, its about completely discrediting and devaluing the PT because it makes you sound like more of a nerd to have strong opinions like that.

RLM (and similar people) dont care if they bend the truth or outright lie about Lucas and his work, as long as they get to appeal to the cynical psuedo-intellectual armchair critics
>>
>>94951163
What I find hilarious is that some of the stuff touted for practical effects in TFA ended up needing CGI. They brought out BB-8 at events and made a huge deal about how it was a REAL effect, but in the movie itself very few shots of BB-8 are entirely practical. Most of his shots needed to be either assisted by way of an on-camera puppeteer to be erased later, or made entirely CG. The BB-8 puppet ended up not being as practical as JJ expected and even he had to express frustration with the fact that he couldn't just rely on the remote controlled puppet.
>>
>>94951172
JJ himself is a purist, he only really gives a shit about ANH.

He appealed to ESBfags in TFA too, but thats it. I firmly believe that JJ does not like Star Wars beyond 1980.

He happily threw the rest of the franchise under the bus to say "It's like the first two, don't worry ;)" to try and stir up the sentiment that Lucas was wrong to take the series in the direction he wanted.
>>
>>94951214
>only cares about ANH

I noticed
>>
>>94951227
He'll never publicly admit it, but following the marketing campaign and all of JJ's press interviews circa 2015, I suspect that he actually straight up dislikes ROTJ too. He has never shown that movie any love, but he knows it would be marketing suicide to criticize it and throw jabs like he did at the prequels.

So I noticed he just never spoke about ROTJ period. Like it was the black sheep of the OT. It was always "ESB is great, but I was always an ANH guy. By the way, we're going back to practical effects ;)"
>>
>>94951214
>I firmly believe that JJ does not like Star Wars beyond 1980.
It's not too difficult to believe. I mean he had his close friend Simon "I don't really have any respect for anyone who thinks those films are good. They’re not. (They’re) a monumental misunderstanding of what the (original) three films are about. It's an exercise in utter infanticide ... (like) George Lucas killing his kid." Pegg on as a fucking consultant for TFA

How did simon pegg even end up on the clone wars after all his bitching?

i used to think this was satire but these openly expresses these feelings completely straight faced every time star wars is brought up
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUkCJDkG3fg
>>
>>94951280
Lucasfilm animators thought it could be neat to connect Maz Kanata to various seedy places around the Galaxy.

Flags at her castle include Ziro the Hutts, Hondo's, Visago's, and various Podracer flags from The Phantom Menace. (Also neatly connects to a Maz-lookalike doll in Anakin's room in TPM)

Fans caught onto this when the first TFA trailer was shown, and were quick to point them out. JJ found out and immediately requested the flags be removed and changed into mundane monotone meaningless flags, claiming to "want to be making something new" and "the movie isnt about Podracing".

The 500 ANH references were apparently A-OK though.
>>
>>94951312
I think his feelings cooled down and he was opening up to non-OT Star Wars, but then he got a minor position of power alongside an OTfag who had the opportunity to just revert everything to be as OT as possible, and Pegg proved that he never actually gave a shit about the Prequels after all.

Probably only took the TCW gig because he was voicing an OT character.

>want to be making something new

Also Podracing was really awesome, one of the few things about TPM I liked
>>
>>94951277
In-universe it's a horribly impractical design to begin with. You have the various tool compartments on the actual ball itself so it has to always make sure it's aligned in a way where the compartments are not only unobstructed but level with whatever it is the droid needs to work on.
>>
>>94951323
>>94951344
The best part is that he couldn't even provide a plausible excuse for why he did it. He was asked and just said "well we removed them because y'know, the movie's not really about podracing" as if this were some massive distraction that took over the scene.

Its a plot derived on convenience and irrational leaps rather than solid plotting and characterization. Even the name of the movie makes little sense, since the protagonists are never threatened or attacked by clones. The clones are, in fact, supportive of the protagonists and Yoda announcing 'Began, the Clone Wars have' makes even less sense in the context of the film.

The clones as a military force show up without announcement at the end of the film, yet apparently are an already integrated part of the Republic military despite their existence only just being discovered days earlier to the complete surprise of literally everyone, and the reason for the existence of the clone army being developed by an anonymous Jedi Master, not even a Republic government official, is barely questioned by anyone at all except as an aside.

Everything just happens because its required to happen. The movie barely has a narrative.

Yoda doesn't consider this a victory because war was something he didn't want. This isn't hard to figure out, he practically says it outright.

What? They clones have their own structure. The Jedi then take command of squads at Geonosis. The full integration comes later. You're complaining about something that doesn't even happen in the movie.

>being developed by an anonymous Jedi Master, not even a Republic government official, is barely questioned by anyone at all except as an aside.
What? The fact that this is fishy is hell is a dominant part of Obi-Wan's subplot. Mace and Yoda actually order him to bring Jango back for questioning. That's the entire reason Obi-Wan followed him to Geonosis.

Did you even watch the damn movie or are you just going off memes you heard?

>>

>What the hell are you even talking about?
You're not very bright, so this is going to be a tough conversation to have.

>What? They clones have their own structure.
When they rock up they're completely kitted out and under Republic authority, or they wouldn't have rocked up at all. The integration of the Jedi came later, but they were already fighting for the Republic completely out of the blue, without announcement, they're just there because they were needed to be there to wrap up the movie.

This is an army no one knew about two days ago, but are already operating as an official strike force.
>That's the entire reason Obi-Wan followed him to Geonosis
And was completely dropped as a plotline the second they got Obi-Wan where they needed him. 'Oh well, time to move on to the next set piece.' They even kill Jango rather than try to take him alive for questioning, because that plotline was discarded the second they found it inconvenient.

I have issues with the Prequels, though I prefer to just either Machete Order them in or not even bother after having watched them a few times. Characterization, plot, cinematography, and acting were some of the bigger beefs that I had with the Prequels. I will say, though, especially in light of TFA, the Prequels had a bunch of original creative ideas and pretty unique mechanical designs and set pieces that weren't seen before in the OT. A shame that they were mishandled by a director who is really better suited to be the creative ideas guy. And, outside of Episode II, John Williams did help deliver impressive memorable orchestral music for the Prequels, which is more than I can say about TFA.

Immaculate conception.
Podracing is the chariot scene from Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ.
His love for Padme marks a break with the Jedi order in an alanlgous way to how early Christianity's preaching of radical love and voluntary association posed an existential threat to the ecumenism and social structures of a paganism concerned with 'balance'.

Because it doesn't add anything to the story and was only added four movies in while not being brought up in any shape or form in the OT. Its existence is basically one of many pieces of evidence that George really should have run his script for TPM past more drafts and eyes before filming it.

Why did Mace leave to arrest Sheev and not first message Yoda and the other Council members about the truth?
>>
>>94953901
>For all we know Watto is Anakin's father.
For all we know Sheev was visiting Tatooine and ran into Shmi at a cantina. After a night of drinking her took a blind drunk Shmi back to her place and did the nasty. Ordinarily Sheev uses protection be he thought 'When's the next time I'll come to Tatooine right?' Deeply ashamed of her behavior Shmi explained the pregnancy as an 'immaculate conception' (just like Mary did, remember back then unmarried sexual activity could be punished by stoning). tl;dr? Sheev is Anakin's father.
>>
>>94954828
You are completely and totally wrong.
>>
>>94954977
Because he got overconfident and assumed he could take on a Sith 1v1. Emotions likely played a part too with him being so angry that he probably wanted to get rid of Sheev as soon as possible. If Mace got all the council members back together, got a bunch of non clone military (keep in mind he knew about Order 66 by now), and stormed Palpatine's office with shit loads of backup everything would have been fine.

Ok now aside from the fact that I told you immaculate conception refers to something entirely different, it's also a theological explanation that was only codified in the middle of the 1800s, almost 2 millennia after Mary lived. Secondly, she was already married to Joseph you fucking retard, and even then adultery, prostitution, and out-of-wedlock sex was hardly punished at all, let alone as a capital offense.

>Ben-Hur isn't Jesus though
It's about the most famous christian film, though. For someone like Lucas, steeped in pastiche and reference, this is about as clear as it gets. And Lucas would've been, what, 15 when the film came out? It was part of his cultural makeup. And then there's this, too: http://www.starwars.com/news/the-cinema-behind-star-wars-ben-hur

>Reaching at best. Anakin's downfall is attachment and fear of loss.
Sure, much more open to interpretation. But you could make that objection to virtually any argument. Also, consider that the prequels are very obviously dealing with the decline and fall of the Roman empire via allegory.

And we're not even getting into the whole 'chosen one/savior' angle. That's another big one.
>>
>>94955132

>he knew about Order 66 by now

How could he possibly know that for certain?

All the council knew is that the army was commissioned by Sifo-Dyas 10 years before AOTC. The chips in their head that caused he clones to follow order 66 was only ever discovered by Fives and he was killed before he could reveal that to anyone.

The only way the Jedi could be suspicious of the clones in any way is the fact that Jango Fett told Obi-Wan that Dooku recruited him to be the clone template. But by the time of ROTS, the clones and Jedi had built up such a relationship that I doubt the Jedi could fathom the depths to which the clones betrayal would go.

TLDR: Mace could never have had the foresight into the clones betrayal because of built up trust and lack of evidence.

Ben-Hur's only relation to Star Wars is that the Podrace is clearly an homage to the chariot race; anything beyond that is reaching. However Ben-Hur is undeniably the best Christ-kino.

I suppose subconsciously Lucas might have made ROTJ a small thematic homage, in the sense of Luke's attempt to bring out the good in Anakin; it feels like Lucas attempting to rewrite the Judah-Messala conflict with a happy ending where that most Christian of all virtues - forgiveness - wins out. Incidentally that recent Ben-Hur remake did just that, but I can't bear to watch it because of shitty shaky cam.

There's nothing here to be really "hype" about, but this does show that unlike JJ, Rian is comfortable to admit that Digital technology is not inherently inferior, and is an invaluable tool when you're trying to bring a foreign Galaxy to life.

Hopefully this means we will get at least one prequel-esque fantasy planet, like Felucia and Coruscant.

In the original version, Anakin gave Sheev his saber to kill them. That's why Sheev uses Anakin's lightsaber for the entire duel (yes the entire duel). They changed the blade color to red because it's really hard to notice in the shot, and Ian wasn't good at saber fighting, so they didn't want to reshoot.
