Pickle Rick has honestly been one of the better episodes. Whirly Dirly was two good ideas for episodes shoved together into a disappointing mess. Rickshank was pretty great if you ignore how it was just a way to not deal with continuity.

Rickmancing The Stone - 4/10 Summer and Morty dick around in Mad Max world for 20 minutes.
Pickle Rick - 6/10 fun action.
Vindicators 3 - 6/10, the whole Saw parody is fun, but not exactly creative.
The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy - 6/10 felt kind of empty, but at the same time really light, and fun in a mild way.

Just a heads up, I'm grading these compared to the body of other R&M episodes. Compared to other shows and even stand-alone, most of these would have considerable higher marks.

I think The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy is one of the best episodes from all 3 seasons.

Better than the inception episode or anatomy park or gazorpazorp (in my opinon) and better than interdimensional cable 2, total rickall, rickle in time or schwifty.

The best episodes (in my opinion) are those that I enjoy rewatching several times, like the satan episode, the first counsel of ricks episode, unity ep, miniverse ep, tiny rick ep, wedding ep, and whirly dirly.

Every episode they act more and more out of character. Rick is a God machine in the first episode going far past what he was able to do in the past, episode 2 he openly cares about the kids while the kids are high and happy living in hell. episode 3 no one was making any sense even Beth was a mega bitch past what she usually is. Episode 4 Morty is just an asshole. Finally in episode 5 Beth goes full stupid and cares about a bf she has cheated on more than once and had a fucking epiphany three times in all three seasons that life is chaos and you should just enjoy the ride but melts when a boy doesn't want her. If I was to rationalise why I find it good, it's probably because the A and B plots were both good. I think it also had character progression, which can probably be compared to the vindicators episode (which didnt seem to have much).

The concept of the immortality field, the idea that Beth needs to prove something to herself, the idea that Rick and Jerry can get along when there aren't other factors involved, the idea that jerry is progressing as a character (which is interesting if you read the rick and morty comics, because there is a world where Jerry didn't meet Beth, and he ends up ruling the whole planet essentially).

I don't doubt that other episodes have good ideas, or good A plots, or good B plots, or good character progression, but this episode seems to have all of these qualities. In general I prefer the episodes that contribute to the arc or lore.

I enjoyed other episodes on a first watching based on their novelty, like the meeseeks episode, and cronenberg, but hey seem relatively bland afterwards.

I think every episode of RnM is good relative to most shows, but that these episodes are good relative to the rest of RnM. I mean, I barely remember the gazorpazorp episode, I often forget it even happened, and Morty doesn't seem to care about his son, unlike worrying about his dad every episode this season. Gazorpazorp practically had no character development, as far as I can remember

we don't need that, not the way they are going about it. That's the issue, the first two seasons this was a back burner that was a bonus to the wacky adventure, now it is the core fuel to them.

It did have character exploration, but as far as I can remember it wasn't really adding a new dimension, just exploring the same qualities of the characters we know.

We know that rick is somewhat of a cynic or a nihilist. Largely the episode is him professing this kind of attitude.

Then you have Morty who looks up to these people, and he becomes disillusioned with his heroes; which isn't much different to his disillusionment with rick or the episode where they switch universes.

I can't even remember the B plot of vindicators. But I'm watching the episode again now.

Again we have Rick caring about NoobNoob when he's drunk, but later forgetting about him entirely. This reminds me of the unity episode where they say he forgot the word for human.

It also reminds me of the unity episode, because we see that rick cares about unity, more than he cares about noobnoob (who he forgets).

It just strikes me as further exploration of the same dimensions of their character, and it's not made up for by the novelty of the plot.

I agree that we didn't explore new parts of their character, but you're missing key elements of the exploration.
For starters, the reason Rick gets drunk in the first place, we see Rick get actually envious, which hasn't happened since the Devil episode as far as I remember, and that was with Summer, and it also didn't hit him as hard.
We also get to see the way Morty deals with how his grandpa acts when drunk, we now know for a fact that it happens a lot, while before we just guessed it.
We also see how much more Morty knows how Rick thinks and acts, while in s1 Rick was basically unpredictable to Morty, now we know he has a grasp on that.
Not only that, we also know that Morty doesn't expect Rick to care about him, while Rick deep down does know that he does, at least a bit. This was in the final part, when they were arguing about what goes on the platform, when Morty suggests that it's a trap and every answer would be wrong, while Rick suggests "Morty" as an answer to the question "who does rick care about?".
Now maybe the last part is nothing new, but it's important that the /characters/ get reminded of it, so that to us when they react to it it feels more natural.

Vindicators is a good episode of RnM, just not one of the best ones in my opinion. It's probably just my personal disillusionment with super hero films, and this kind of parody.

Sure we get new information about the characters, but it's less of showing, and more of telling.

I think the reason I don't rate the episode that highly (and I'm writing this while watching it again) is that a lot of the episode is discussing the dynamics between the characters that only show up in that episode.

Compared to other episodes, like the rick and unity episode or the evil morty episode.

We havent seen evil morty again, and we havent seen unity again, but the episodes give us information on the dynamics between our main characters and once-off characters.

The vindicator episode is largely the dynamic between once-off characters.

I think the postcredit scene about gearface is more interesting than the dynamics between the non-main character vindicators, because gearface seems to be a recurring character.

Every episode explores new parts of the characters, without having character exploration.

For example, the ricks must be crazy.
There isn't anything we learn about rick or morty that counts for major character progression. And the B plot doesnt have character progression for summer really.
We already know rick doesnt give a fuck about "real universes" like the cronenberg earth, so its not really a surprise that he'd destroy a miniverse.

The part of that episode I enjoy is the interaction of rick with other characters AND the concept that they explore, and Zeep is a pretty interesting once-off character, unlike the vindicators.

Or, well, lots of obvious other moments. I'm not arguing that he shows it well or that it redeems him in any way, I'm just saying that it's a part of his character.

I wasn't even trying to convince you to like the episode more or anything, I was merely explaining why I personally liked it, and these character explorations make it a pretty enjoyable episode for me.
Oh and it also seems to be establishing a dynamic where Rick sort-of-cares-but-not-really and Morty grows gradually sick of his shit and more jaded, which would probably ultimately lead to Rick as the new voice of reason, but that's just me guessing. I thought, since the season seems to have some sort of low-key progression, where the final episode would complete the arc they seem to be going for... then to me that's probably the arc that they choose. With the final episode probably leading to the complete role reversal.

So here we are again, and next week there is no new episode, so this one will set the mood for a while.

The idea that Rick and Morty go on a break from adventures, going by the rather predictable/cliche tempo of season 3 so far (although I really enjoyed last week's despite it,) is going to result in one of a few things:

*The family goes on a legitimate vacation to a normal destination like Hawaii and try not to be bored out of their skulls at a great location on Earth that pales in comparison to alien worlds.

*Rick and Morty stay at home and try to thrive without adventure, resulting in Rick initially being grumpy but finding something that fulfills him, like a poker group or woodburning, and Morty realizing it's the only thing that makes his shitty life cool, as he continues being a nerd and a loser at school that fails with Jessica.

or

*Rick being Rick, creates clones of himself and Morty to go on an adventure instead, which makes no sense except in Rick's mind, and the clones try to take over their lives once they realize what's happening.

Personally, I'm leaning toward that last one, just because it's typical Rick dickery, and it's not ~totally~ cliche, but will probably play out as such. Maybe they'll go for a cheap mind fuck and Rick actually transferred he and Morty into the clones to make Morty appreciate their adventures or the clones will take over or whatever.

You are right that Rick seems to care about Morty when he isn't drunk. It's arguable that he doesn't want morty to get too cocky, which is why some people speculate that morty will become evil morty.

And I just rewatched the part where morty says they're his heroes. So I guess its arguable that rick was envious or disappointed.

So it does change my opinion of the episode, it does appeal to me more. It probably is one of the best episodes, or atleast borderline one of the best.

Wow, wasn't expecting that, well I'm glad I was able to let you understand my point of view. It's, well, this show tends to drop these kind of miniscule hints about this stuff and it's easy to overlook so I get it, plus Rick as a character is really bipolar meaning that one moment he's genuine and he cares, the next nothing matters to him, one moment he's manic, the other depressed, and it sort of works, surprisingly, but then that makes it hard to interpret which Rick we're watching in any situation.
I do think the Rick and Morty main cast (aside from summer) is well developed. They're assholes, yeah, but they have reasons, you can empathize, that's one thing that I like.

It's difficult to shift from reading textbooks for university and for fun, and then sporadically trying to write on 4chan about a cartoon. It's like when you speak two different languages, if you hardly ever speak one of the languages, it takes time to readjust to speaking it.
