Simplistic. Keeps budgeting easier when your characters and backgrounds don't take ages to draw for every scene. The animal people actually does a fantastic job of distracting from the lack of detail everyone gets in addition to providing most of the background humor for the show.

No, political cartoons tend to be exaggerated caricatures with special attention payed to distinctive facial details of the political figures, often using excessive shading and skin toning to make it look disturbing. OP's stuff is the exact opposite: a willful attempt to not be cartoonishly exaggerated, causing all distinctive facial details to be rounded out despite the diversity of bodies and faces being displayed.
