That's what most Tumblr art really lacks. Appeal. Most characters that are designed well are designed in such a way that they are interesting to look at. Whether that appeal comes from being cute, sexy, cool, scary, or even just so-ugly-you-can't-look-away its something that appeals to the audience in such a way that the character holds their attention. A lot of Tumblr art lacks this despite the characters being designed to be ugly, because they are ugly in such ways that aren't usually very interesting or attention-getting. Just not fun to look at for any extended amount of time.

And today characters are pretty much always "aged up" so people complaining about it are usually complaining about nothing. Any actual shota content is outnumberd a million to one by "now the characters are generic pretty 25 year olds they are the same age and they work together in a coffee shop" art.

As for the gore and psychopaths though, that shit and fascination is very real and I have no fucking idea either.

As someone who's been in the fandom circles where it was common it's somewhat of a derivative of the 'lolsorandumb fandom'. A bunch of girls who obsess the fuck over things in order to belong.

It's sometimes also done for attention and to make themselves look more edgy and 'mature' than other people. A way to express their deep seated teenager angst in a way where they can find people just as angsty. You can't stab a person you're angry in real life, but if you draw it you'll sometimes even be praised for it. The thought of dominating and destroying or characters dominating and destroying each other is cathartic for them. In a way the artist/shipper/writer gets to play god and have power over their creation/objects of their adoration by choosing whether or not they get to live or die or suffer. It gives a sense of control that a lot of the more hardcore people don't have in their lives.

Serial killers, or at least the psychopaths that are used in these ships, are often considered 'quirky' in a 'strong' way. Confident, smart, charming. Things girls often find very attractive. It makes it better if the girl, or the character who she likes to ship with, can overcome the homicidal tendencies and be 'the one'. Or in the case of the abuse ships, be the object of obsession of the abuser. This somewhat relates to an attraction to 'bad boys'.
