Beth is insecure so she compensates by trying to one up everyone and constantly be the smartest person in the room. To the point she can get downright malicious about it.
She's married to weakwilled loser who constantly reinforces her superiority complex but she basically has to babysit and constantly tries to get her to nurse his fragile ego.
She however resents him because she thinks she can do better. And she reinforces his learned helplessness by constantly putting him down.
