I'm not defending the writing, regardless of Shiro being there or not Keith really needs to socialize more with the others. His relationship to Shiro is good, but he didn't start hanging out with others before late S2/S3 and it's still a bit awkward.

Definitely. Really, they both do though. Shiro holds the paladins at arms' length aside from Keith (it shows in how when the rest of them try to comfort Keith all they can up with is "wow he was pretty cool, what a legend haha"), and Keith just wants to husbando Shiro all the time, maybe talk to Allura or just brood alone.

Being unable to portray multiple relationships at once is more of an issue with the writers than anything. I actually feel that problem more with Shiro than Keith, Keith had his rivalry with Lance set up from the beginning and some nice interactions here and there with Hunk, plus tension with Allura over the Galra thing. Shiro had a really nice relationship with Pidge that it feels like the writers just dropped and even now that Keith's relationships with the team are evolving, Shiro still feels like his interactions are all Keith-focused and he has no relationship with half the team despite being the previous leader. Would it have killed them to have the others show a little more concern when he was gone?

Reminder that Lance has always been the one to trigger Keith by yelling at him because of muh rivarly. Keith is already and has been friendly with Lance but Lance chose to argue with him instead of being civil. They're becoming cordial now because Lance is being civil for once.
