In biology females create "stationary" gametes while males produce "mobile" gametes that seek out female gametes. Hermaphrodites produce both gametes. The spectrum for a large majority of humans is male and female, with very few being "hermaphrodites" (extremely few of those are true hermaphrodites; they may have both sets of external/internal genitalia but usually only produces eggs or sperm). Usually, genetically, XX is female and XY is male; however, errors on the Y chromosome (the chromosome in humans that decides whether or not the human becomes a male or female) can cause it not to do it's thing, pretty much doing nothing and causing the human to be XY but produce eggs (often with female appearance) - this would be a female even though genetically one would expect it to be a male.


How the Biological definition clashes with the Cultural / Political / Psychological definition(s) is anything from how the encompassing political group of a society defines what a gender is to what the outward appearance of the genitalia are to the way one dresses/behaves all the way to whatever arbitrary noun a person says they are.
For example, the people and government of India recognize Hijra as a third sex; they often dress in feminine clothing are are sometimes castrated: in a biological definition, they are almost always biologically male but sometimes are biologically female, depending on whether or not they create eggs or sperm. When referring to castration, you usually say what they were before having their genitals removed (I know there exists eunuch to describe male castration but I know not of a word to describe a female / hermaphroditic version).
Another example, Sara was born with a vagina and penis but the family decided to raise her as a girl: biologically, if she produced eggs then she would be a girl, whereas if she produced sperm then she would be a male.

The main conflict with Bill Nye and others is that he tends to stray from the Biological definition of MALE / FEMALE and instead goes with Cultural / Political / Psychological definition(s) of said terms; a second large conflict similarly involves using sex, with the bonus addition of XX/XY errors being thrown into the mix (refer to the previous example in the first paragraph for a fun example).


Personally, I think it might be best to start using spermatogenic (sperm-producing) and oviferous (egg-producing) when describing gender in a biological sense as opposed to male and female as modern definitions often have clashing definitions that lead to great confusion. E.g. Jqhn's gender is oviferous in the biological and medical sense of the word while it is "identifies as an attack helicopter but has sex with pandas" in zhibrit's personal context.

This demonstrates a rather simplistic understanding of human sexuality. Firstly, gender and sex are NOT the same thing, gender is informed by biological sex (that being that the sexes have certain characteristics, i.e. masculine and feminine characteristics). Secondly, the presence of a penis or vagina, while good for determining the biological sex of an individual, is not the defining character, that would be the configuration of the 23rd chromosome. Males usually possess Xy, while females usually possess XX, but any configuration which contains any ys is male, and any with only Xs is female.

Also, possessing a vagina and a penis does not mean that both "work". The sexual organs are only considered functional if they produce the requisite sex cells (sperm/eggs). No human is capable of producing both types of these cells, humans can only be one biological sex.
