I'm on episode 6 and it is very good so far. Stakes but not at the expense of being funny.
>>
>>94886042
Just finished watching. Pretty good. Disappointing that we have to wait until January or later to get the second half, and depending on when/if it gets a second season, it could easily be a year or more from now until we get the first half of the second season.

It's interesting that Lady Liberty/Batmanuel love/hate relationship might be moved onto Lint/Overkill.

Seems like Overkill might be the hero who had his hands smashed when Arthur was a kid.

I wonder if BIC soda is related to The Terror. They had a commercial for it running during the SDCC off-site, and there was shit that implied brainwashing or secret underground group related to it; and looking at the logo for the soda, the "i" is more shaped like a "T".
>>
>>94886042

I was glad they initially set it up so you think that the Tick is from Arthur's imagination, which they were also doing in the pilot, but then prove that he's real not long after.

Its how the creator rolls. He parodied Silver Age and now he's taking a swing at Dark Knight and such.

I had reservations about The Tick but the actor is solid and does a great job capturing the bravado of the character.

oh shit, i didn't recognize him inside the suit, but it kept reminding me of him in the ads. yeah he's actually a good tick. i want to watch it now. i'm just bummed out the original live action was cancelled it was so good.
>>
>>94887732
The Tick is pretty much in-line with his cartoon version but everything else is a more adult tone in terms of humor and plot.
>>
>>94887748
There's obviously something going on there. The Tick acknowledges that he was from Arthur's childhood and the Tick has no memory of who he is before he met Arthur. There's a good chance that the Tick actually is in Arthur's head but in the sense that he's some sort of mental projection given life or something among those lines.
>>
>>94886042
I liked it. It wasn't laugh-out-loud funny but I chuckled a few times. The plot is surprisingly good and I'm actually looking forward to seeing how everything turns out. The costumes might be kind of shit, but the actors are perfectly cast. The Terror is definitely my favorite character so far, he manages to still be threatening while still having the borderline-senile grandpa personality.
>>
>>94886961
The Tick is just pure joy
>>
>>94889493
Dude is pretty much a chameleon in voice and acting. Hell give him a female role and he probably play it to perfection.

This series was fun to watch! I genuinely enjoyed it!

Oh man miss lint is such a cutie!
>>
>>94889677
Yeah, I feel like the whole mental projection idea is best idea.

Especially since they make a point to note that his costume has changed from the pilot.
>>
>>94890770
That could just be a joke considering the original costume wasn't very well liked and was probably changed for that reason alone.
>>
>>94890869
Maybe, but I figure it's a plot thread that Edlund wants to seed. In the first confrontation with Overkill Tick notes that they have an well developed bond, and intimates they've known each other longer as well.

Honestly, elements of the first two Edlund written episodes feel like a Superheroic version of "Harvey", and that's brilliant.
>>
>>94889481
They not only play that shit straight, they foreshadow it.
>>
>>94886042
I don't have Prime- Does Patrick Warburton ever show up as Barry?
>>
I thought it was great. I was surprised there were so few episodes, I wanted more!
>>
>>94886042

So can this series use characters who appeared in the cartoon, or are they using substitutes like the Patrick Warburton show was forced to do?
>>
>>94886042

Spoon!
>>
>>94891299
Pretty sure they can't because of copyright bullshit since those characters were original to the show.
>>
>>94891384
I wonder if they'll be able to use characters from the comics.
>>
>>94891299
>>94891384
>>94891410

Are they at least using substitutes like Batmanuel (Die Fledermaus) or Ms. America (American Maid)?

I know they weren't in the original comics, but Tick stories without them, or versions of them, feel empty.
>>
>>94886042
>Anyone interested?
No. Not unless they adapted the identity rights story line and had Patrick Warburton play Barry Hubris
>>
>>94886042
It sort of reminds me of Brave and The Bold in how earnest it is about this strange world it's presenting. Also no dumb ass relationship or lying drama is a huge plus.
>>
>>94891427
Not yet, but as someone mentioned above you could think of Miss Lint and Overkill as having a similar entry/dynamic to those two.

>>
>>94886537
Holy shit, that's right When Arthur had that dream where he was playing with the Mego-style toys of the Flag Five, the figure of the guy who got his hands crushed in the pilot was described as a gunslinger. And remember that the Terror's weapon ate their eyes, and Overkill has bionic eyes.
>>
>>94896670
I like to think it's Christian Soldier, even though you're probably right.
>>
>>94896750
I thought it could be but In the pilot, the closed captioning still calls broken hand hero by the name "Shooting Star" (which actually makes a lot of sense given his costume; it might have been changed for legal reasons?) while Arthur gives his name as "Sharp Shooter". And it makes sense why the Terror wants to keep him alive but only break his hands, because he was good at gunslinging. Also, did you notice that Overkill wears a bullet bandolier but doesn't seem to use guns? His attacks involve blades.
>>
>>94896002

If anyone hasn't already, you can check Amazon's X-Ray while watching for a look at concept art and stuff. Be warned though, that it does contain what are likely spoilers for the second half of the season. So avoid them and the rest of this post if you're not interested.

For instance, while it's only been alluded to so far, there's renderings that show off Overkill's cybernetic hands, pic related. And there's more: what the robot head's body looks like, the interior of the robot head, a shrink ray, and a mausoleum.
>>
>>94886042

This show executed a better story in 5 episodes than Defenders did with 8.

Ben edlund/fury are guys from supernatural/Angel etc. They were pretty fucking good with telling a 5 episode story and I found myself laughing unexpectedly at least once or twice every episode. That is rare for me.

Unlikely unless Superian does die in some freak accident and they are in hiding somewhere.

>>
>>94899943

Edlund is doing the flipping conventions on head thing where everything around his characters are much more serious than their narrative voice would portray. It feels like Dorian episodes of X-Files where the POV is like on this whimsical journey but real world is still real world kind of thing. It feels like it has a lot more layers than it really does which is what makes it work.

I was worried he would end up making The Tick a parody of a parody to modernize it or something but it's played completely straight and uses situational humor instead of phrasing gags.
>>
>>94899943
Chairface could show up depending on if the show does well and they can pull off the look. On top of that he appeared in the comic first, so Edlund would still be able to use him (unlike American Maid and Die Fladermaus).

She had such a great arc in the first season of the Following. It's really unfortunate that they dropped the ball so hard in the second season.
>>
>>94901751

I think it was the right way to handle it because in a lot of ways it shows just how otherworldly superheros are even if they inhabit the same space as civilians.

Also Arthur's kind of character is usually really annoying but I found him to be like a better version of elijah wood. Wood is too much of a pretty boy to pull it off usually but this guy is in that sweet spot of ugly/weird but still likable. Especially in contrast to his pretty sister.

The violence showing his 'origin' was really jarring but really well done. Like you never really get that like you don't take over the top villains seriously but then you're casually watching these heroes getting straight up murdered, it was brutal.
>>
>>94888545
Don't feel bad. I'm 40.
>>
>>94902455
The show is less "The Tick" and more "Arthur (guest starring The Tick)". Which is all well and good if that's what they were after, but. Well.

Watching the Tick calling the Terror and having a stupid conversation with him was pretty fun too.
>>
>>94902504
I think Arthur is the focus because he's the relatively normal guy that the audience can relate to. But The Tick is still the best part.
>>
>>94902504
There's also the still lingering idea that The Tick isn't real.
>>
>>94902504

I think when you have a really likable character, it's the Darth Vader syndrome, or Hannibal lecter. Sometimes less is more. The Tick is in that space where he's less man and more enigma. So they treated him in similar vein.

He's been acknowledged by enough characters besides Arthur that I think that's put to rest. But it could be that Arthur is a super that created The Tick from his subconscious. Like a stand or something.
>>
>>94903042
Yeah, that's what I meant about "real". Not saying he isn't physical, but I think the idea that he's...an actual person is still up for grabs.
>>
>>94903042
they still hint at the fact arthur is reality warping him into existence.

the tick literally told arthur after dot saw him that when he leaves arthur his brain gets all fuzzy. and such

also wheres the other half of the season
>>
>>94903042
I think this is the smart way to do it. They're trying to make a somewhat grounded and believable world that's a bit silly, but the Tick is just so dumb and oblivious a character that it kind of breaks the narrative. Sure, it works when you've got shit like a guy with a chair for a face and Dinosaur Neil, but it's hard to get emotionally invested in a world that has CHA written on the moon without at least discussing how that could mess with people emotionally.

The Tick is what a kid (who, lets be honest, was probably already a little unstable to begin with) thinks a superhero should be.

I think so far they're leaving it open. I don't know if they'll ever actually confirm who or what the Tick is; Edlund hadn't really done so in any of the previous incarnations.

Also the scene with him talking to Arthur about how he can't remember what happened before a few days ago could be interpreted either way. Either it could be that Arthur manifested him just a few days ago, or it's just the Tick being easily forgetful. Remember he couldn't remember Dot's name at first; or what Miss Lint looked like.

Also there was a little nod to the comics backstory when Arthur asks if the Tick escaped from a mental hospital. If you've never read the original comics, the Tick's story opened with him all straitjacketed up in a padded room, with the next page showing he escaped to The City.

So The Tick is a tulpa?
>>
>>94886042
Not gonna lie, that scene in the pilot where you find our why Arthur is Arthur is fucking intense. Like, yeah, that shit WOULD fuck a kid up for life.
>>
>>94906692
Oh is that what he was supposed to be saying to Arthur at the end? I couldn't understand it at all. I kind of just assumed it was a reference to something he garbled at kid Arthur, cause I thought I remembered having trouble with something at the end of that scene too.

Can someone talk to New England Comics about the new release date of the first issue of the new Tick comic?

You might recognise him from this

>"the key to successful falling lies in realizing you ARE a falling person."
He's certainly no Patrick Warburton, but he is a fucking great Tick
>>
>>94911381

His tick seems more sincere and less-gag oriented which I actually like more. It feels more like a living thing/person than previous tick.
>>
>>94910462
Yeah, I had to turn on the subtitles to figure out what he was saying.
>>
>>94907681
Could be. I definitely started wondering if he was once Dot saw him right after Arthur thought he was imagining the Tick.
>>
>>94907681
More like an imaginary friend who became real, tulpas need lots of people believing in them right?
>>
So... Onward is evil, right?

Like...

I'm not the only one who saw that?

very strange, 5 extremely short episodes

I kind of like this but why so little?
basically they dropped a short movie with no conclusion. I dont get it
>>
>>94914782
Amazon split the season in half for some reason. More episodes coming later.
>>
>>94914859
how much later?
>>

the official answer is "to build anticipation"
the truth is, they are making sure nobody just got a free trial of prime to watch the whole show so this is (((their))) way of ensuring everyone pays for it

>some time in 2018
isn't building anticipation for a nonexistent "binge watching problem". It just makes people forget the plot, disengage, and drop the show when you go on hiatus for months
>>
>>94886042
The important question...

...does he yell Spoon?
>>
>>94915108
it might just be me but i find binge watching is better with an episodic show over one with a more serial story. i think this show would be better with some time in between episodes to decompress and analyze the information.
>>
>>94886042
I thought that Arthur deciding by himself without the Tick around (on the same floor anyway) that he was going to defy Ms. Lint and keep the suit was a genuinely powerful moment. And they stocked up on the Tick's seeming invincibility and bombast very well so that when he was worried he was going to drop the bus because his grip was slipping, you really felt the stakes.
>>
>>94889677
My guesses are:

Tulpa (like you said)
Superhero from an Alternate Dimension (with his own Arthur who underwent a similar arc to the one in the show, but has a costume more in line with the comics)
Superhero from the distant past or future that got punted to the present (which is why AEGIS has no info on him)

Well only two people saw him originally, but as someone up above mentioned. They all think it's crazy that this guy exists but don't care about him after only a short while. As if his existence is accepted on a reality level, incredulity included.

So you go from just Arthur/Dot to then bad guys, Overkill, Lint, then a House party etc. It's like a natural progression of people believing he exists. His first interaction with a group of people if you remember isn't until after he 'meets' Arthur which is why people thought he was imaginary in the first place.

So Tulpa as sustained by belief of many could act on many levels as he interacts with more and more characters while at same time a meta-joke with an ever growing audience included in that. Though that is probably just a lot of reading into it. Probably a lot of what really isn't there and what we do naturally, filling in for gaps writer's leave behind.

>As if his existence is accepted on a reality level, incredulity included.

Superheroes are a thing in their universe. It's just that there haven't been any in the City since the Flag Five were killed so they kind of get the Tick, but aren't sure how seriously they should take him because, again, they've been superhero-free for over a decade.
>>
>>94915312
It seems very likely that they might just never fully answer the question of who or what the Tick is. They never did in previous iterations. I can even imagine that there will be conflicting revelations in the future that further call his identity into question.
>>
>>94915347
The problem is the Flag Five were, from what anyone could tell, a bunch of normal people in costumes. They had all sorts of high tech tools at their disposal, but they weren't quite "super" like Superion.

In fact, so far, the only other legitimate "super" hero we've seen so far is Superion. Which is kind of odd when you get right down to it. Apparently, other superheroes exist in this world, to the point where there's an entire organization that exists to organize and manage the, but the only ones we've seen in the present day are Superion, Overkill (in a loose definition of "hero") and the Tick, who isn't even registered and has never been heard of up until recently.

Well they had the talking dog, so oddities do exist in consciousness of the public. He was a part of christian crusaders? Which was all a long winded meta joke to play on the name god because if you reverse it, it's dog.

Still you get the feeling that the show just needs more time to world build is all. We're left with a lot of unknowns still.
>>
The be honest, it's hard to really get a feel for what this show is going for.

Tick-Ass: The Less Cynical Version of the Venture Bros.
>>
>name-dropped reddit

wtf i hate the tick now

Just kidding I love the show
>>
>>94915149
He doesn't; but Arthur's actor confirmed at least one of "Not in the face!" and "Spoon!" would be said in the second half of the season.
>>
>>94915995

Well he's not going to mention us. Ben probably wants to keep his career.
