I finally got Ring of the Nibelung yesterday. I sat and read Rhinegold along with the opera. The dialogue isn't one to one with the opera, at least as far as I can tell because I don't spreachen sie deutsche, but it's still not too difficult to follow along with, making for an incredibly unique experience, especially for a pleb like myself who prefers to read things over watching them.

He makes some really weird transliteration choices that drive me nuts with a few character names

and yeah, the opera is talky! in fact, that's the thing that surprises people IME the most about Wagner, they expect non-stop high volume and you get a lot of chatty people instead

What's really interesting to look at is how PCR tries to convey the mostly instrumental parts, like the interludes that cover the scene changes, or the part near the end where Donner parts the clouds and you see the rainbow

Hello, Storyteller.

Normally I'd try to have something relevant to say here, but honestly, I can't be arsed. 4chan is having one of those days.

And on top of the usual bullshit, Nintendo is pulling that manufactured scarcity with the SNES Classic. Stop fucking doing that!
>>
So when collecting(downloading) fourth world stuff found out Gerber did some Mr Miracle?

>>94881410

i called my local gamestop to ask about it, the poor worker sounded so tired
>>
>>94881382
I wonder how common a sight it is in Marvel NYC to see two people get randomly atomized.
>>
>>94881419
Yeah, IIRC Gerber's run was the run that coincided with Orion's "O" costume.
>>
>>94881289
I can't always tell if the dialogue has been shortened to fit in speech bubbles or if the singing is just stretching out German words really long.

Either way, highly recommend the experience to anybody that has any interest in the operas OP has talked about. The individual issues are a lot cheaper than the hardcover but it's VERY high quality. A comic that basically has a soundtrack is kind of unheard of AFAIK.

Also, I've got a depressing as FUCK quote from Mary Skrenes, let me get it

I like how insane every character in that is from the word go. They all have passions they cannot even hope to contain. But I'm a true pleb, I haven't even touched the opera - or any opera. Just read that comic once.

Skrenes shortly after Gerber's death:

>There were some people who could only write, that's all they could do.
>Steve, unfortunately, was one. And people should know comics are a place to start and then move on. But he didn't like animation, and he didn't like television. He liked comic books.

PCR has trimmed the dialogue and he's not really great at getting the alliteration/Stabreim of the original, but that's hard as fuck to do

The hardest thing to try to duplicate, which I think he doesn't succeed at but can't, to be fair, is the pacing of the opera, but also the way the motifs communicate meaning and layer and thicken as you go along

>>94881481
TBF that's what most operas have that makes opera fucking cool--forget realism, we're here for the oversized emotions
>>
>>94881410
I don't really get the point of the remake consoles. Isn't most of that stuff on the Wii U VC anyway? Or even the Wii one, which had a nice classic controller too.

But yeah Nintendo has been doing that scarcity shit for a while. I don't really get the point, unless they see sales do better if you stretch a release out more or something.

Damn right, he did. That's what we need in this medium, more people that are actually passionate for it, not failed screenwriters, or novelists who think writing a comic book would be a "fun experiment"
>>
>>94881616
glad I don't have space for shit like this or I'd buy a ton
>>
>>94881456
You gotta remember that Nintendo started as a toy company, and to a degree, they still think like a toy company.

See, with toys, it's beneficial to make hot button products harder to find, since toys are a more niche market that relies on collectors who will spend big cash on special edition merch.

Video games however, have reached a level of ubiquity that makes them desired by a much larger range of customers. Nintendo is old and Japanese though, so their thinking is archaic in this regard. The SNES Classic is a highly anticipated product, this toy company Nintendo defaults to making it scarce, because that's how toys work.

It's fucking stupid, but there is a "logical" thread here. Though you'd think they'd have learned from the NES Classic debacle. Nintendo, you're possibly the least scummy of the big publishers, please stop doing stupid shit.
>>
>>94881630
We also need less fanboys that read comics and only comics. And when I say comics I'm talking about very mainstream, very popular cape comics.
>>
>>94881570
From what their experience at Marvel was like, I don't blame her. Even Kirby wanted desperately to get into animation. Until DC put royalties in place and Marvel begrudgingly followed, working in comics was like working a retail job-- no matter how much work and passion you put in, it was basically a thankless job with shit pay that you used to get into a higher-paying industry.

I don't think she was trying to be dismissive of comics as a medium, she was just saying he had all this amazing talent and never got real recognition out of it, and his creator owned stuff sold like shit.

He expected to get them started and then pass them on.

Thing with Dishonored is it's kind of a "casualized" stealth game, but not necessarily in a bad way. Combat is very effective so getting caught doesn't mean you have to just reload. But you have LOTS of options for sneaking and many different routes. It's really satisfying to get through without even being seen once and leaving no trace at all.

>>94881771
If Gerber had gotten more stuff out in the mid-80's he would have been super successful, I think. By then there was finally a market for more offbeat or artsy comics, you could actually make a living publishing stuff like Ronin, Maus, Watchmen, etc. Gerber's attempts to break into that market just didn't work out somehow.

Post kept getting eaten but - I have no point of reference but I love all these PCR close-ups and atmospheric scenes of demented love, rage, avarice and whatnot. The sorta oppositional, unfulfilled, doomed trajectory of it all seems set out right from the start with the dwarf and the mermaids. And then everything comes crashing apart in fire and flood at the end, it's great.

Anyway I really liked it as a comic - so I probably should try the fucking opera sometime!

I imagine TV writing still pays more, since the comics industry is very small and Hollywood is very large, and typically you are paid per script, with bonuses coming from sellthrough of the issues.

There's a reason most writers (such as Bendis) realized there is much more money in character royalties and creator-owned comics.

Overall, there's probably less of a gap between the two than there used to be, since writers have become a dime a dozen and comics is very incestuous.

It's like every time a new character is introduced, they get a shower scene. One I was reading today had John Walker undressing in a hotel room with another dude and throwing his clothes across the room.

Thanks for posting as always, Storyteller.

I always feel a little better just chatting with you lot.

But seriously, Nintendo, please stop being stupid. I'm begging you.

It is but you could just try the base game first. The DLC is like real DLC, not what usually passes these days.

I found Dishonored's setting quite derivative of this webcomic I'm into so was initially hesitant on it, but it won me over quick. It definitely counts as a Gud Game and as other anon says Knife and Witches are probably the overall highlights of the whole thing. They also tie directly into the sequel.

>Admittedly I just want to see more /co/ doublethink on 'I hate SJW writers' vs. 'This SJW writer is hot'
It's not that uncommon for somebody to hate a group of people and simultaneously think one is hot or fetishize the entire group. Kinda like those gay politicians who are gay, hate gay people, constantly think of gay people, but like having their luggage carried by cute muscle twinks they paid for.

>If Gerber had gotten more stuff out in the mid-80's he would have been super successful, I think

Just imagine if he hadn't become completely alienated from the Marvel higher ups just before they launched Epic.
