Thread 400 is a good time to jump in I guess since I'm just starting out. I'm like 2 pages into my comic but now I need to actually design some of the locations so here's an apartment floor plan.

Does this look like a sensible apartment? I could just copy the layout of the apartment I used to live in but I want to try and be original. The big door at the back is a balcony.
>>
>>94876952
I wouldn't really worry about an apartment being "original" unless you have an idea of it having secret doors or something like that. Or something that is relevant to the plot like a macguffin room of sorts. I don't think the apartment looks bad but don't be afraid of copying layouts like the one from your previous apartment.
>>
>>94876952
i've seen a lot of apartment layouts and that sure is one.
I can tell you that copying the apartment you lived in is smarter because you won't have to check the floorplan constantly, it'll be in your memory. and nobody is going to recognize that you "Weren't being original" because nobody knows where you lived.

in any case it's good you're planning! wish I'd done that.

>>94876952
Nobody is gonna know if you copied your own place. Don't be original for the sake of originality.

If story reasons require it to look a specific way, though, consider making a 3D model and walking through it. Pretend you're living there and try to get to different rooms quickly. Like, immediately there are a few choices on your floorplan that feel strange to me. Why is the door to the bedrooms at the end of a hallway, when you could make each room slightly larger and put the door in a more accessible spot? Why is the couch and television positioned in a way that blocks movement to the bathroom, both bedrooms, AND kitchenette?

There's not even a good place to move the TV setup to make the bedroom hallway more accessible. If you push the couch back closer to the balcony, then the television table is gonna block the bathroom door. If you pull it away from the balcony, you'll block the front door. Anyone who lives in this apartment would have a miserable time positioning their stuff and getting around.

But I dunno, it could be funny if the characters acknowledge that.

Genre is a placeholder name at this point, it just means the second thing to combine with the theme

Meh. That's not a good question. It's obvious I based the characters appearance on that design almost entirely because I had been drawing Pusheen reaction images for months. I wanted to tell a story so I just went with the designs and began telling a story.
>>
>>94877302
The tiny hallway is actually kinda based on my own house, though that leads to a bathroom and a bedroom and not two bedrooms. This was just a quick sketch without much mind to the actual proportions of objects, it should be better spaced when I actually draw it, I do have Sketchup on my other computer so maybe I could try that though I was never that skiled at using it. Maybe I could move the counter to the other side of the wall so the kitchenette is accessible from the front door.

Just like you would anything. Tell a story with pictures.

Ever read the Silent Interlude issue of Marvel's GI Joe? It's one of the best.
>>
>>94878557
I animate them.

It's not actually that hard for fighting. You're shifting between a bunch of concrete extreme poses with maybe a frame of lead-in and lead-out, and you'd be drawing those poses anyway.

Failing (or complementing) that, just make it stand out. Don't "swing sword at wolves and do damage". Have the protagonist punch his fist down the wolf's mouth and beat the shit out of its stomach, which I was told recently is actually how you're supposed to fight them. Make everything a grotesque and creative execution.

what do you mean cult-inducing? You mean a power that a lot of people find worthy of worship? If it's anything that can kill people, that's one. if it's some element that's vital for life like rain or whatever, that's another.
Blindness kind of goes with clairvoyance traditionally
>>

>Jesus man, are you unironically using MS Paint?
No. SAI has a "binary tool" that doesn't anti-alias brush strokes, leaving them a bit pixellated.
I quite like it; it gives it a nice sort of crisp texture and makes it a lot easier to fill and edit with select tools

It's hard to be a werewolf. You transform every full moon no matter what, fleas and ticks love your fur, you become alergic to silver, and the furries find you attractive. Sadly you are terrified of mascot suits since that fatidical day at Fantasyland.

She can restore memories with perfect clarity.

Can't quite remember how Grandma looked like before she passed on? No problem. Want to remember the last time you saw your child with perfect clarity? No problem.

Conflict comes from people wondering if she actually restores memories or if she just implants whatever thoughts she wants into a person's mind.

....If you don't use this idea I might actually.
>>94880012
Vampires/Ghosts/Werewolves were conflated quite often in ancient stories. Ancient storytellers were far less autistic about the "rules" for supernatural beings.

It used to be just "When the Autumn moon is bright". Which made poor Larry Talbot's life suck.

Also I would totally love a horror story about werewolves trying to survive against a furry werewolf hunter with a nightmarish fursuit made of actual werewolves.

yeah agreed. in my book vampires and werewolves are just normal animals no stranger than centaurs or griffins, but oberon's children can disguise themselves as anything. They're also randy as fuck, infamous for fucking everything in sight, so you never know who or what might have a little god or nymph or elf or whatnot in their bloodline.
>>
>>94880181
My half-wolf werewolf only changes on full moons (her time of the month) but the 3/4ths wolf types change at every moon or anything circular with a high albedo reflecting sunlight. Concentration would surely count.
>>
This post >>94878573 made me think of a serious question.

Guys, what do you usually skip reading comics? I need a flood of answers, please! It would be an important statistics for us.

I do tend to skip action scenes. I skip big detailed establishing shots. I often skip dialogues, when I got the idea what is dialogue about.

>>94880181
Yeah I have also read that wolfbane blooms are also related, which along with the Autumn moon just gives a very specific time of the year and I guess it just isn't as fun nowadays when you can have him around 3 days per months (or 3 nights if you just go with "moon at night" rules).

I personally go with "full moon time" in this "setting", including day and night. I'm trying not to get too autistic with the rules on supernatural races but I want to stay a bit consistent at least.

>Also I would totally love a horror story about werewolves trying to survive against a furry werewolf hunter with a nightmarish fursuit made of actual werewolves.

kek what? People sure are getting straws on their hatred at this point.

The hatred with Comic Sans is mostly because of how misused it is, but as a font it's totally ok and legit. I'm a graphic designer and I can tell the hatred the font gets in the area is a meme by itself at this point. I personally don't mind it, but I avoid using the font just because people seems to trigger people and never stop about it.

I was thinking of doing a Captain Marvel comic because he's in the public domain. Is Black Adam as well? He appeared in one of the Fawcett comics but it was a Marvel Family special so I'm not sure of those fall under the same circumstances (though I suspect they do).

It's true, that detailed backgrounds take time and are challenging. But I still enjoyed myself because as I was progressing, I could see that I was creating a scene that felt real, at least to me.

Sorry if it seems boring, if that's what you're trying to say. The idea was to show siblings comfortable with each other. When I color it, it'll show that it's the middle of the night, with the brother unable to go to sleep, working on his own thing, but still being protective of his little sister. That was the idea going into it.

It certainly wasn't fun drawing all the way through. I often find myself shutting down my own mind while my hand just continues drawing. But fun things aren't usually fun all the way through. Sometimes, you have to push through hours, days, years of tedium to get the skill and work that you want to actually make it fun. There was a time long ago when drawing the sofa would have been a chore. But when I did this drawing, the sofa was actually fun and interesting.

Gosh, sorry for the long post. I just wanted to say that in the end, I did enjoy myself.

Including the pic of the drawing in question, to avoid confusion.

I've been doing stories with Public Domain characters, primarily Daredevil (called THE Daredevil because I think that's cooler) and Airboy. I've been looking into doing stuff with the Fawcett characters but as far as I can tell Black Adam is off limits.

I have no idea why this is. But he's not on the pdsh wiki and they've even got Namor and Golden Age Human Torch listed.

http://pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Fawcett_Characters

I'm half tempted to do something with Human Torch because I like robot superheros and he predates even Astro Boy and Namor because Marvel has buried him so deep in their toy box he can't see light.

I'm almost 100 percent sure the Mouse will kick my ass if I ever got popular enough for them to care and I have Namor and Human torch on my site.

It's just a random drawing, really. I'm still figuring out what the characters and settings look like. All of these drawings are fairly arbitrary, depicting locations, and sometimes scenes from the story.

Also helps that some of these can act as photographs that I can copy and paste into photo frames in the background of actual comic pages.
>>
>>94885769
Not the Marvel ones per se, but I do know the names were kinda generic in the early days so there were more characters with those names. Technically you can't use the names anymore because of copyright but the concept itself is public domain. Or something like that.
>>
>>94885755
I don't think you can rip off a challenge activity meant to foster everyone's creativity. Of all the shit he does it's best not to rag on him for something that's okay.
But yeah, a troll. So basically just ignore him
>>
>>94885878
er, trademark would be the thing keeping you from using it in the title, but yeah. Human torch is just barely generic enough that if you were fighting anyone else for it, you could actually win and they'd end up having to put "marvel's human torch" on what they sold (assuming they ever come back from disowning the FF)
but Namor sounds pretty specific. I'm sure there were several "Sub-mariners" but were there people named Namor? what does that name even derive from? I assumed it was some random syllables put together, like they were fond of back then. Gorgoth son of Goom etc
>>
>>94885752
Hmmm...maybe. My re-imagining of him has him with two bodies, a physical one and a living magic shadow, and calling one the Dare-Devil could be an interesting wall to tell the two apart.

He's also two-toned because he's the chosen champion of Australia's Rainbow Serpent (possibly the oldest deity on Earth and still worshiped to this day) and he paints himself in the serpent's honor.

I'm amazed I'm the first one to ever connect him to the Rainbow Serpent considering he's always been a boomerang throwing multi-colored man who learned his skills from Australian bushmen.

>>94885769
I have a little skepticism, but the pdsh wiki says that their first appearances in Marvel Comics 1 and Motion Pictures Funnies Weekly 1 are both public domain because they weren't renewed in their 28th year per copyright laws at the time of publication.

>>94885878
From what I understand names are covered by trademark law which is different (but just as corrupt) as copyright law. ]

You can't sell a book called "Captain Marvel" (even DC can't because they sold the trademark to Marvel) but you can use the Captain Marvel character and his name in story.

>>94885952
>Generic enough

When in doubt you could always just do the expy thing comics have done for ages. Water Man and Human Flame.

>What does that name even derive from?

You really want to know?

Bill Everett wanted to name him something that sounded weird but also regal and so named him Roman but spelt backwards.

>>
>>94885921

It's not like its illegal or anything, no one wants to call the cops on him. But its still a low thing for him to just copy in a challenge.
>>
>>94886149
wtf how did he think he was going to get away with this
>>
>>94886189
>>94886206

Well to be fair he wasn't doing an entry for the challenge, but it was still a low thing to do. Also he said that gloryhol's comic awoke him "what I really want to do with my gothz comic" and so he was going to change ways starting with this page. So far he only made one more page and then died via the powers of Warcraft.
And you could say "well it was not a challenge vs challenge at least" but gloryhol anon already mentioned interest on making this a whole comic as well by the time, so bones was still copying gloryhol's layout and part of the idea.
So yeah that was most of the thread's problem with him when this happened.

I think it fits quite well, and this comes from someone who avoids using Anime Ace and other similar fonts because of their overuse. As long as the font works well and don't clash too much with the balloons and/or artstyle it's ok in my book.
>>
>>94888872
I've got nothing against Anime Ace. Really I'm looking for Anime Ace Bold, but as the standard.

I really like this font, but it's almost too bold by default.
>>
What do you guys think about putting up own site? I have been using Twitter and Tumblr as platform and it's working fine, but i wonder if site is more "professional", and easier to navigate. I'm just afraid that in this moment it's too late to put site up.
>>
>>94889051
It's not the best option but maybe try giving a small white stroke to the letters so they don't look too bold. At least until you find a better font. Then again is not the best option but it's just to get away from the boldness.
>>
>>94889081

Do you mean, actually writing the dialogue in by hand? Ain't nobody got time for that. I can't justify the time cost of painstakingly lettering every bubble to perfection. Because I'm the type that would.
>>
>>94880346
P2: "Yup. Yup" could be closer to the main speech balloons. It's so far away it reads like a completely separate statement, rather than an interjection. There's plenty of room to move it so the first "Yup" is closer to and above "And the twins...".

P4: No crossbar-i in "It's". Insert a line break "It's gonna // be ok." so that "be" isn't right up against the edge. The balloon is also forming a tangent with his hand.
"We're utterly fucked" is also nearly forming a tangent with the panel border. Nudge it up and left a bit to give it some space.

Font size on the standard dialogue seems to be a bit variable; it looks like you're changing the size to make it fit the space available, rather than for emphasis (eg shouting or whispering).

My thing is as far as I've found the "specials" are part of the original now-PD run from Fawcett. Like the other anon I'm basically guessing they don't have a legal dildo hidden to slap me with.

I know Captain Marvel is really difficult to work with because of BOTH the copyright DC owns and the Trademark Marvel owns. But Billy, the Wizard Shazam, the clap on/clap off nature of saying the word, and in the special I read even Adam Teth getting the power and being banished to the corner of the universe. He's even called black adam.

I don't see how DC can claim sole ownership.

But I do thank everyone for the reply. I've been scouring the PDSH as well. (have actually eyed airboy since he just seems bad ass).

cc:>>94885701
>>94884533
Just a quick one Captain Marvel is a fucking mess rights wise but basically he was a Fawcett character. DC bought the Fawcett building and thus got the OG prints of Marvel (Whiz Comics and other lies Fawcett had). The thing Fawcett fucked them with was that they ONLY owned the original copies, not the copyright.

Marvel then bought the trademark down the line (which they've new bestowed upon an adult lesbian legacy character with a cruel heart... basically the opposite of Batson.)

Conclusion: it seems DC has ALLLLLLL their eggs in the Black Adam basket so I assume if they can they'll cockslap me for touching him.

Captain Marvel is public domain. Not trying to be rude just letting you know if you don't. I don't know the specifics of the story, even people who've covered it admit it's hazy because it was a settlement in the 40s.

What I'm iffy on is whether or not Black Adam is PD. PDSH lists the Special issues which I think covers Marvel Family Specials but they don't list specifics like they do with the "ongoing" issues that are in the Public Domain.

But buying rights is common, theres no legal problems or disputes there. The only reason Captain Marvel is different is that is was due to a settlement between DC and Fawcett. Fawcett had mandated a Superman knock-off which led to Captain Marvel and Whiz comics. This was stated in the interviews during the legal disputes which gave DC legal standing that Fawcett had, in fact, intentionally copied them.

Rather than be sued for more they settled for less, giving DC their assets which included the building and OG copies of the comics but not the "rights" to publish the originals (as they were unstated in the agreement).

Marvel Comics came in at some point and bought the trademark which is where it further muddied this particular case. Rights sales, in most industries, are generally pretty simple when they're amicable.

I agree that trademark and copyright should generally be tied together but I think that's a side issue to the public domain as trademark doesn't infringe upon copyright (DC can still use their Captain Marvel, Fawcett's Captain Marvel, just can't use the name on the cover and promo material.)

Question, do you think you could fill us in on The steps you take to develop your own ink? Maybe even an estamated price range of the different materials needed for the recipe? I'm interested in the process myself, iv been researching various methods around the net but they all seem a bit pricey, i don't usually visit /co/ all the often but wouldnt you know it I did today and I came across this very thread and your work! I see you use some traditional ink so I thought this would be a good place to ask.

It's Friday and Capeworld, and that would mean a new comic...but we're busy preparing a three page comic about Japan's first Magical Girl and her latest student. Sit tight and have this write-up on one of the Statesmen: Deseret, Stateswoman of Utah.

http://www.capeworldcomics.com/

This is the first time I've written a "lore dump" on a single character. I'm curious to know if I'm doing it alright.

Is Deseret an interesting character? I wanted to include enough on her history to give a strong sense of character without going into words words words. Did I overdo it? Should I have shortened it?
>>
>>94894960
You're an artist / writer team, right? How do you handle the disrepancies in work speed / content amount?
I teamed up with an artist about two months ago. We are still in the practice and planning phase but he says he feels pressured by how much content i.e. how many chapters I have planned out even though I try to assure him that I have no unreasnoable expectations and that he should work at his own pace.
I can't really slow down either, right now the ideas just keep coming and I'm worried if I don't take the opportunity I won't be able to come up with something as good later.

How dou you handle this kind of thing? Surely the writing of your story must be well advanced beyond the chapters that are actually put on paper.

2nd image. I wanted Desert's look to be very typical superhero because she's pushing herself to be the ultimate superhero who can do anything.

I gave her little sparks in her ponytail as visual shorthand both for her powers and her inherent instability.

Also, does anyone know if there's another Mormon superheroine? I think I just might have the first.

>>94895897
Always have a backup plan because deadlines will be missed both by yourself and your artist.

That's what Deseret is today. Plan B.

How do you find an idea you're willing to stick with? I can find a concept that I really love and would love to explore but I'm so often influenced by other media I consume that when I see a new concept or something I'd love to incorporate into my work I get disinterested in what I was working on. I have all the technical skills to produce intermediate level comics but I just haven't found an idea I'm passionate enough about to stay with it even when my own interests shift. Any tips on staying with an idea or finding one worthwhile? Also how would I go about finding a legitimate writer to work with?

I think (and this is just my opinion, I haven't read a lot of lore dumps to compare it to) you went into a wee bit too much detail. The writing is also not fantastic; there's a lot of missing commas and sentences that could be consolidated and reordered. That's part of what makes a lot of words pleasant to read.
as for the bare facts, as in the cartoon that played in my brain while I read it, it's good. I like her story. and I love the idea that genetic superhero shit isn't so clean and clearcut as it tends to be in comics
>>
>>94895951
>Writer to work with

I'm fine writing scripts for you if you're willing to have me.

Will you have me? If you want to sample some of my work its just about everywhere on the capeworld website.

>How do you find an idea you're willing to stick with?

If you have to be passionate before you work on something you're doing it wrong. Harlan Ellison said writing is pure work., no different from patching roofs or working a cubicle. You wake up and work. Peter S Biegel said that if the Muse is late start without her. Write.

I'm at 2000 words a day and I'm far from satisfied with that little amount.

>>94896018
Thank you. I'm going to try and give the writing on the lore dump some punching up. At the very least make it flow better.

>Love the idea that genetic superhero shit isn't so clean and clearcut as it tends to be in comics

I've always liked the idea of superheros that have to struggle with using their powers. It makes a lot of interesting scenarios like Deseret having to grow up super-primitive on a farm before she got her electricity under control and how her first toys were just clumps of coins she stuck together. It gives a sort of "up from poverty" undercurrent to her story.
>>
>>94895511
sorry about that, really. I just hate shitting up the catalogue with personal questions.

Found a thread that might fit though, sincerely appreciate the help.
>>
>>94895951
People like you should be making comics with a huge hodgepodge of ideas, because you have what it takes to fill them properly, and those stories are fun. Just make it a setting where all kinds of shit can show up. A doctor who, a rick and morty, a mighty max. something with that kind of versatility.
>>
>>94895951
You could have a few separate ideas (depending on how different they are) that you split into different comics. Of course, if you are having trouble sticking to even one comic, that might not work...

Start with the big picture (genre or whatever) and hopefully it's flexible enough to fit a bunch of cool, smaller ideas into it. Just try to do your best to modify your ideas to fit into one thing. Make them a part of different story arcs. Make a small, but diverse cast that you can attribute all these ideas to without straying from the bigger picture.

I was thinking of setting up a little tryout almost, like a very broad concept and seeing what people can make with it. It's not that I'm picky over skill level, but rather I have a really particular way I want to tell a story but I'm not capable of it.

>>94896174
I actually really love making stories like that, but I'd also love to make something emotional that has a lot to say, but again, I'm not a capable writer lol. I think that broad style of storytelling works really well with something like a webcomic or serialized type of comic, but I'd love to make something like Inio Asano's work but much more westernized.

>>94896187
Usually when I do something like that I get a little too stuck in the world building. I'd like to start with the story and then build the setting to accommodate that story.

My story/characters in a nutshell.

>I'd say square, but square is way less cute than round. cat's-eye glasses are always an option. you know, the sideways teardrops

Curves do make things softer and cuter and I understand where you're coming from. (after all some of the aforementioned glasses characters I have I've based on wavy and softer features to compliment their personality and purpose in the story) But at the same time that kind of glasses gives off more of a librarian vibe than I think I'd like for this character. But thank you for the suggestions.

So the way we work is I (writer) draft/redraft/generally faff with the script a chapter at a time (and get one or two other people to check it), then I send it over to the artist, who goes through it and gives feedback.

After that, we start working through the script page by page, releasing one each week (sometimes we have time to work up a buffer and it's great). I then start working on the next chapter before we finish the previous (so right now I'm working through the first draft of the next chapter), meaning it'll be ready in time for when the next one is due to start. Hope some of that was in some way helpful!

the art style would be the same but I'm wondering if I should do it using text boxes underneath the panel when the characters talk (using quote lines and a visual cue from the character who is talking) or with speech bubbles. In the quest threads, there would hardly be any actual speech, so I think the former could work, what does /hyw/ think?

Also each story is going to be unrelated and unconnected for the most part, in an episodic fashion.
>>
>>94897804
Thanks, I appreciate it. Going throught the sript page by page sounds very reasonable.

How do you pace yourself though? You say you write one chapter at a time but from personal experience this doesn't sound right to me. Let's face it: writing can be done in a fraction of the time required for drawing, even if you take into account doing multiple versions of a chapter or fretting over pieces of dialogue seemingly endlessly.
Do you just stop after one chapter and start to come up with new ideas only when you've finished the most recent chapter? I wouldn't be able to do that.

I went to a two year art school and it did me no favours. None of the connections I made paid off (although I became the connection that helped a few friends from art school get work). The skills that have since gotten me work are all things I learned on my own. No one who has hired me has ever asked to see my diploma, most don't even care about a resume, it's always been about the portfolio.

Everything you need to learn to get work in a creative field you can learn from YouTube tutorials, friendly streaming artists, and online art communities. The real question is, do you have the drive to teach yourself, or do you need the structure a school setting provides?

If you're considering art school but unsure, and you have time to put it off by a year to decide, I recommend taking 6 months to a year and trying to teach yourself what you need to know for a career in art. Set a schedule, give yourself deadlines, and see where it gets you.

If you have a decent preliminary portfolio at the end of that time, and a bag of new skills you're eager to use, then maybe you can save yourself the money, spend another year polishing up those abilities, then start job hunting, relatively debt free.

If you waste the year with nothing to show for it at the end, you probably need a school setting.

In either case, aren't school won't make you a good artist unless you're driven to become one and open to learning.
>>
>>94900157
That's not so bad.
34$ is enough for a month's worth of art supplies If it's nothing too fancy. Be thankful people are supporting you. Keep up the work and that amount will surely increase.
>>
>>94895113

Then you will probably be happy to know that it does get hotter. Even though the joke is the cold detachment with which we sometimes design our characters. Even the hot ones.

basically I'm trying to get every or a lot of settlements in my story to not just be rusted out communities and instead be places that cater to a certain mutants needs, in addition to having pre war storys and in general look more lively than say settings like fallout 3 where everything is grey

Art school/college is, as my teachers told me many times, mostly just to get contacts. Both with fellow teachers and classmates.

Right now I'm going to a small con where I will share a stand with 2 friends and like 90% of the other artists that are going to be there are classmates from my generation and/or that were around school before I graduated. We are all in good terms and we give "publicity" to each other from time to time so our followers can follow them too. Sure we are still beginning but that's a small example of the contact thing.
>>
>>94901509
Started full time work immediately after graduating high school.
A couple of my friendos suddenly decided they loved art and it was their passion so the university accepted them even though they're all bottom of the barrel talentless trash. So far none of them have improved and most have ended up in debt. Also it turned one of them gay.
Instead I draw on my off time and by the time I'm done saving up I'll have over 50k to do whatever I want with. Then I'll just draw for a year or two and see where it goes, will probably make a comic or join some company.

Personal opinion is I think it would be easier to find an artist that is actually good at drawing/painting instead of a university professor who might be worse than yourself and ask them for lessons. I think someone would progress A LOT faster with one-on-one face to face lessons rather than being in a class with 30+ other people.

Sorry for blog

Also used by 2 of my characters in particular.

When/if this thing gets published you will recognize it by the amount of nerds and people with glasses there are in the main cast.

Yes. You can also freely customise the page size, margins, bleed, live area, etc. There are also many pre-set panel templates you can easily drop onto your page (eg for 4-koma).

Requesting some help with an idea I'm working on, how could I make an average joe actually be an awesome martial artist without him actually knowing he is one himself? Basicly the main character will get involved in lots of fights against his will, but he will surprise his opponants by actually being able to kick there asses. Despite looking quite scrawny and most of his opponants will be these huge hulking guys. Maybe he also learns techniques and super moves megaman style.

-Amnesia?
-Story is about a master martial artist (mc just doesn't know he is) maybe be a little meta
-super soldier created genes to make super martial artist mc doesn't realize it yet though or why
-martial artist skills passed through some crazy being before it's death for some reason, mc gets those powers, doesn't relies it though.

wax on wax off I guess? he didnt realize all the shit he's been learning in seemingly unrelated activities was actually teaching him everything he needed to know. like dance taught him timing, marksmanship taught him aim, gymnastics taught him balance, and I guess the 'pull your hands away before they get slapped' game taught him fast reflexes
then actual technique he got from videogames

>>94912998

1. He's the reincarnation of an ancient martial artist.

2. He's superhuman and has so much strength that technique is irrelevant.

3. He's telepathic but doesn't know it and it manifests as incredible reflexes and the ability to read body language like a book. It's not that he knows what he's doing, his body just has an autopilot that can read his opponent's nervous system.

4. It's Dr. Jeckle and Mr. Hyde but Hyde is Bruce Lee and Jeckle is a pacifist hippie. When wimpy guy isnt' in control Hyde is pumping iron and training and some of those reflexes carry over to wimpy guy.

5.This:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate_(2008_film)

Just do all of this.

>How are things coming along with your entries thread?
Working on the script on the sidelines because I'm working on other stuff right now. I'm trying to make it a story of 3 pages again. Since my previous entries didn't have a good pacing in the sense of feeling like you could wait a week after reading one page, now I want to give each page the formula of ending with a good punchline and yet keep being part of a longer chapter (yeah 3 pages I know but still is long).

The toughest thing about getting into an art job is getting them to actually look at your portfolio. It's more who you know than what you know.

Studios get so many applicants they literally cannot look at all of them, so they might weed people out based on their resume, including their schooling.

But if someone there knows you and vouches for you, your name gets put up front. It doesn't guarantee you a job, but it guarantees they'll look at your portfolio.

This is also why artist resumes tend to be more arty than a regular resume. If all they look at is your resume you want to catch their eye with your abilities rather than where you went to school.

As far as art schools go, I'd say avoid the Art Institute franchise schools, they're trash and have had to shut down a number of their locations due to lawsuits.

(Special note, the Art Institute of Chicago is not a part of the AI franchise and I've heard good things about it, but don't take my third hand knowledge for it, research any school you consider.)

>>94903081
>Art school/college is...mostly just to get contacts.

Contacts are a big part of art school, if you go make sure you take advantage of that. If you decide against art school there are other ways to make contacts:
Internships
Conventions
Social Art Gatherings (like a local "Drink and Draw")
Online art communities

>>94903086
If you know a good artist willing to teach you, throwing money at them for an hour or two a week of one-on-one can potentially be cheaper and more instructive than going to an art school. Assuming that artist can teach. Not all good artists are good art teachers.

Actually, back to the >>94924852 image. Be thankful I didn't create that first. The reason I'm doing Witch's Hill is to experiment and learn how to make comics as well as improve my art. It's intended to be a throwaway comic

The story for that one is a bit more complicated and would definitely fall flat if I did that before Witch's Hill. It involves depression, parental abuse, anxiety, trauma, and a few other things. I doubt an amateur like me could tackle a story like that without completely fucking up the themes. I intend to make it, but only when I'm confident and prepared enough for it.

I've been developing a concept with a cast of characters since high school.

I've gone through many drafts of the characters that I hated, redesigned, got rid of entirely, and set up a different kind of tone altogether.

I've finally got something I'm happy with. But I don't know how I should introduce this to the world.

I want to introduce the cast of characters one by one, and I'm having trouble deciding if I want the characters to reveal themselves in the middle of a wacky antic or have the first comic gradually fall to pieces with each of these characters going to war over what they want to start off with.

Texture Density: 25
Max Hardness
Max Brush Density
(Everything else more or less standard)

Regular G-Pen and Milli Pen (with Anti-Alias set to the far left) to fill in the solid color (as opposed to the rougher textures)

I don't like how the lines turned out

I need to find a program that will recognize pressure sensitivity on my tablet so I don't have to do it manually

Should it be a good idea to draw character models before going into making the comic?
>>
>>94933890
for a new character I'd say yes. I draw a reference image and have it open whenever I draw them, at least until I get the hang of drawing them
>>
>>94933953
That means I have to draw references for my main cast since I have no model to base them on...

well you could just use the first panel you drew them in as your reference

but it helps to draw your characters from several angles at first so you'll be consistent

I'm just using mspaint

hot damn, this is really good for MS paint.
But yeah it's time for you to get a real program. Clipstudio goes on sale constantly, I always recommend it first. I think it's on sale right now, but if not, you could always just pirate it until it goes on sale then pay for it.

>>
>>94943640
I'm really enjoying the more consistent coloring with this comic, the jumbled mess that is your regular comic is really assaulting to the eyes. You also have some dynamic shots in there all of this is making it easy to look and read this. you should think about maybe starting a new project, starting fresh.
>>
>>94936302
>blind hate is just a meme
He's a living meme. Even dewd shat on him for being pathetic, WHILE he was defending him no less. How the fuck do you end up lower on the totem pole than a brain damaged autistic teenager?
>>
>>94944196
>more consistent coloring
you mean less consistent? because I varied it up for once instead of exactly the same color swatches day or night. the colors aren't jumbled at all, on the contrary.. rigidly the same.
anyway this comic is nearly over, and after that I will be doing a new project and then some years down the line when I'm better at drawing, more kiwi day
>>
>>94944318
autism, this boy is genuinely autistic
>>
>>94944318
I guess I should have said the colors are better coordinated in this comic, before you have all these colors that just don't go together. And awesome, hope it turns out good. You wanna tell us alittle about it?
>>
>>94944420
Ohhh you think they clash in kiwi day? shit I thought I had pretty good color schemes there
radically oversaturated, yes, but good schemes. dark red and dark blue, dark red and light green, dark green and dark blue with black and white, red and brown, that kind of thing.. eh. well thanks! I really just slapped together the colors in this one. Considered giving her black ears and tail.
>tell us a little about it
I was thinking of doing a Prequel-except-Zelda-instead-of-Elder-Scrolls kinda thing. Otherwise I have a lot of non comic art project ideas for to work on actual quality art..
and I do have some ideas for next version of kiwi day too, but I'd rather not get myself too worked up. i'm waiting til i'm realllly good. and ready to do shading and lighting shit. also better writing.

Okay, I actually feel sorry for you now, CF.
>>
>>94944614
yea kinda , all over the place. You even did more shadowing here too, and those backgrounds on the bottom panels are actually nice the crystal too. do you like your paneling? Serious question what do you think about your comic? is this just to have a few inside jokes? or do you want to try and entertain a lot of people? Please answer me I want to know.
>>
>>94944754
still more than most people in this thread
>>
>>94944924

And I'm talking about kiwi day n when I say your comic not the one posted.
>>
>>94944924
It's more like.. i have a lot of stories and crap to tell, characters' lives to flesh out and wrap up, cool powers to depict, monsters to draw, and jokes to tell. That's pretty much it. I started a comic for drawing practice, and while it really isn't good for that, it DOES get me drawing more poses and backgrounds than I would just doing standard concept art crap. the simple style makes it even easier to try new poses, and i've gotten all kinds of things down that I used to be hopeless at, like hands.
glad you liked the crystals, I used crystals from Atomic Robo as a guide (pink ones affixed to a dinosaur)
>my paneling
i mean it's just a flexible grid, so it's nothing special. gets the job done.
>>
>>94944924
you're creating a monster and you don't realize it yet
>>
>>94944924
oh also, what is it you liked about the outdoors backgrounds? I really just slapped those together, if I hit on something good by accident I wanna know
>>
>>94945072
you seem like your just a pure hobbyist with webcomics , like you really don't want anything for your. if that's the case then theres nothing to be said.
>>
>>94945220
sure I guess. I doubt I'd ever make money off of it if that's what you mean. It would be pretty tits to have some kind of a fandom though. I feel like my setting has some fun things in it. room for OCs, that kind of thing.
if I was ever going to make money it'd be doing concept art or something. I mean.. I AM doing that for money at the moment. for indy shit.
