Maybe I'm too optimistic, but this could actually benefit non-mainstream cartoons:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but getting nominated for an Oscar makes you a member of the Academy, right? Look how many times Disney/Pixar have been nominated and awarded. The animation branch of the academy is overrepresented by the Walt Disney company! No wonder we got both Moana and Zoo this year in that category.

By letting other people not employed by Disney decide the nominees (directors, screenwriters, foreign filmmakers...), we might actually get more diverse animated films nominated by pushing Disney out of competition; no more Disney/Pixar bias when it's time to vote!

Even for anime, Your Name's core plot was trite. The things it had going for it was its rendering and the plot twists, but once you get past those, its just another "boy meets girl" deal that you could watch done better in too many other anime.

Lego Movie not getting nominated the year before was the most infuriating bullshit.
>>
>>94883700
If animation was treated the same as live action, a movie like Zootopia would never win. People just have a whole different set of standards for animation. Animation has never been approached as real filmmaking in the US.

Movies like Your Name should just be competing in the best foreign film category instead.
>>
>>94883944
There was a time when Beauty & the Beast was pushed so hard to be nominated for Best Picture by one judge.
>>
>>94872036
>The Oscars will be SHIT

Fixed that for you. There were like three good movies this year? Four?
>>
>>94884015
and everybody in the Academy threw a bitch fit that it was nominated
>>
Animated films in 2017:

Wolfwalkers
The Breadwinner
Coco
Mary and the Witch's Child
Despicable Me 3
Loving Vincent
Captain Underpants
The Night is Short, Walk on Girl
The Lego Batman Movie

Animated movies from 2016 that could be nominated in 2017 because they'll get an English release and/or simply weren't nominated last year:

In This Corner of the World
Ballerina
A Silent Voice
Your Name
The Girl Without Hands
Another Day of Life

The actual nominees will be shit though.
>>
>>94881644
People shouldn't care about ANY award ceremony, really. They all end up being popularity contests or agenda-pushing contests.

We certainly shouldn't give a shit about one that mixes in commercial with art and has now changed the rules to negate most art.
>>
>>94876534
Haven't seen it but my mom hated it so much she's convinced it was some kind of practical joke. She's ranted at length about it multiple times.
It's pretty funny. I think she appreciated Moonlight more
>>
>>94877184
The people who NOMINATED in years past were the animation branch, ie. those who actually gave a shit about animation and the variety it can present as a medium.

The Academy as a whole are the ones who do this bullshit
>>94877085
which will surely result in a list of only mainstream nominees, UNLESS nearly all of them abstain
>>
>>94884127
>Wolfwalkers
>2017
Bruh they haven't even finished production on Wolfwalkers. We're not seeing that movie for another two years at least.

Also Your Name was eligible last year, and is therefore ineligible this year.
>>
While I agree with >>94872105 in that the Oscars are a fucking joke (and the Moonlight fiasco was really the perfect storm), here are my predictions:

>>94875396
>Coco (will win because of The Mouse)
>The Star
>The Breadwinner
>Mary and the Witch's Flower
>Loving Vincent
B-listers:
>Captain Underpants
>The Emoji Movie
>The Boss Baby
>Ballerina/Leap
>The Girl without Hands
>Birdboy

I'm not counting on Despicable Me or Cars because sequels never get in. If anything the nominations are more interesting than the actual Best Mouse Award.
>>
>>94886027
You forgot the MLP movie. I don't see it having a great chance but the shitshow would be glorious if it even got a nomination.
>>
>>94885966
Could Your Name be submitted for another category this year? I could be like City of God, which failed to get nominated for Foreign Language but got noms for other categories the following year.
>>
>>94886511
Nope, since the category it was submitted for last year was NOT Foreign Language
>>
>>94876817
La La Land was the epitome of mediocre Oscar bait.
>>
>>94886027
My fast-selling predictions for the nominees this year are:

>Coco (Winner, because Pixar)
>The Breadwinner
>The Lego Batman Movie
>Loving Vincent

And a fifth nominee that could come from literally any one of these movies:

>Cars 3
>Despicable Me 3
>The Lego Ninjago Movie
>The Big Bad Fox
>Mary and the Witch's Flower
>In This Corner of the World

It really is a wild card race for this category this year, since I have no idea in which direction the nominees will flux (blockbuster kiddie flicks vs. indie "artsy-fartsy" / foreign fare).

Loving Vincent has the backing of being a film many years in the making and being the first of its kind, while The Breadwinner is coming from a company whose first two films have been nominated for the award.
>>
>>94887105
The formula is always the following:
>Two big-name studio productions (Zootopia/Moana)
>One original anime (The Red Turtle)
>Two mid/small passion projects (Zucchini/Kubo)
Coco will obviously be a big-name (and the winner), Mary and the Witch's Flower has a safe lock on the anime, and it's easy seeing Loving Vincent and The Breadwinner as the arthousers.

Per standard, that only leaves the second bigwig. Of course, shit could very well be *all* bigwigs because of the Academy's animation division getting relegated in the nomination process. Only time will tell.
>>
>>94888550
The Red Turtle is a French movie, and Ghibli had barely anything to do with it.
>>
>>94882884
Pretty much. I really wanted to like it and it was very well shot, but it was a big pile of nothing. No wonder it was completely forgotten one week after Oscars.
>>
>>94887054
Moonlight was a typical Oscar Bait; La La Land was a Hollywood handjob like The Artist.
