Honest opinions on this movie? I thought it was pretty comfy and feelgood. Did they really have to change the name for America, though?

Are there any traps in it? That's the important question.

It was meh, the romance subplot was superfluous. felt the big finale was cut too soon, too.
Also that movie didn't need a crazy chase with a villain. dance should have been enough

is wanting to engage in physical violence against a child, to punish them for saying mean things grossly immoral?

23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the way, young lads came out from the city and mocked him and said to him, "Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!"

24 When he looked behind him and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number.
>>
>>94859513

Except for the fact that she's 11, no, it's not wrong.
>>
Spoilers.
I liked it but the movie felt too bloated. The main plotline was fine, what with red stealing blonde's identity to join the dance course, getting found out and then fleshing out their rivalry (Although they made blonde a bit too villanous at the beginning for the character she became at the end. I get pride, but she was a huge bitch),
The story of her teacher, her fall from grace and sort of redemption and happiness was also fine,
but then there's the friend's plot about inventions or some bullshit, and a triangle with the tall slav kid, Gustav Eiffel namedropped all over but never shown, red's mother's plotline (You can make her want to dance because of her own agenda), all of that could be trimmed out.
And the final felt like the characters didn't have a way for blonde's mother to get comeuppance, since she still had all the money and power and no one could touch her, so they turned her into a complete retard who swings a hammer. It felt odd.

Dunno. There was a great movie in there, but they stuffed it with so much that it only turned out okay, IMO.

Pretty sure they wanted some kind of synergy with the more popular American animated movie titles. There is sort of a common theme to them since Tangled.

"Leap!" sort of matches things like Home, Tangled, Brave, Sing,

It fell under "American Kirby is Hardcore" syndrome just so little boys won't think it's "girly".
They also redubbed some of the English dub voices just so they will have more recognizable names in the US.
The US English dub isn't out yet, even in theaters but I already watched the UK/Canada English dub, which was the first English dub, in Canada a few months ago.
I also watched it in France in the original French version (I am fluent in French so no need for subtitles) a bit earlier.
Already have the Blu-ray, by the way. Since it's already out in some countries.

>>94856733
The same thing happened with Metegol and The Magic Roundabout (both of which were also distributed by The Weinstein Company) which were retitled Underdogs and Doogal, respectively. Even if they already had English dubs in the UK already.
The same thing happened to Karigurashi no Arrietty when StudioCanal UK released it in the UK as Arrietty with Saorise Ronan voicing Arrietty in the English dub while Disney did another English dub with Bridgit Mendler voicing Arrietty and the movie was retitled The Secret World of Arrietty in the US.

>>94856371
It was pretty great.
Much better than I expected.
Really fun, comfy and uplifting, also a really cute film with a great soundtrack.

My favorite non-Japanese (The Red Turtle doesn't count since Studio Ghibli produced that French/Dutch/Japanese co-production) foreign animated film of last year.
Haven't watched Long Way North yet and I thought My Life as a Zucchini was a bit too overrated.
My favorite foreign animated film of last year is a three-way tie between The Red Turtle, Your Name. - Kimi no Na wa. and In This Corner of the World.
Ballerina found a way to be one of my favorite animated films of last year.

Hopefully, Leap! becomes a hit in the US since people are actually giving The Emoji Movie more money than it deserves.

It was okay. Pretty good animation. It could have used a littler more ballet is serious business a-la Black Swan, maybe. The evil mother of the blonde girl seemed a ridiculous overstretch. Little kid's subplot with the wings should have been cut. Also, the Russian dancer teenager could have been something more. I dunno, maybe more of a douchebag or a mentor or something.

I loved that song but I'm not sure which theme song for a foreign animated film I liked better; Cut to the Feeling or Zenzenzense.
The fact that Carly Rae Jepsen is performing two new songs and is one of the voices in the English dubs made both me and my girlfriend (who is a huge Carly Rae Jepsen fan) really hyped for this movie.
>>
I saw the American version this past weekend.

It was.... ??? Basically you can describe it with a quote from the movie.

>You have the energy of a bullet, but the lightness of a depressed elephant.

There's a good story in there! Somewhere in between the strange tonal shifts, occasionally odd dialogue, completely unrealistic message (girl with no experience in ballet is suddenly good enough to outshine girls with years of practice and is given a lead role that premieres in hours) and random characters who behave with all the subtlety of a paid Youtube streamer.

The girl antagonist randomly deciding to break the music box was out of left field, and made her suddenly 180 at the end weak as heck. It would have been easy to fix... have the girl initially be nice to Felici, maybe even answer her questions about ballet, until her mother spots them and pressures her into being a bitch. Ta-da. The mother's vehemence towards Odette and literal murder attempt of Felici, complete with her saying earlier "I WILL HAVE VENGEANCE!!" was completely ridiculous as well.

The lack of payoff for the dream sequence was frustrating. I took my 5 year old niece and when they did the fourth and final dream, even she sighed and whispered: "They're doing this again?"

The dance scenes were the best, and they felt the most real, exciting and genuine. Probably because they based the choreography on actual ballerinas. There should have been more ballet. It's actually sad that a movie about a ballerina featured so little ballet.
>>
>>94859513
A series? I feel like she'd run away after the first one, are you gonna chase after her so you can continue? Because then you're just chasing a little girl, trying to put your limbs on her private parts. And people go to jail for that sorta thing. As they should.
>>
>>94856371

Generic and bland, not horrible overall, but it's just another 'if you try hard enough you can achieve your dreams' even though in terms of ballet that's pretty fucking far fetched even if you have a great teacher. I mean, I assume all those other girls had probably been dancing since they were 5 or something, and yet this random girl is able to out-do them in an extremely short amount of time.

But again, for kids, I guess it's fine. Though the side story bit with the guy friend as well as the rich dude romance thing were boring as fuck.

>>
>>94865670
She outdid them in about a week, I think. 6 other girls and one elimination per day.

Sesame Street had a better ballet message

>Big Bird sees a professional ballet dancer dancing and decides he wants to do ballet
>immediately jumps to "I want to dance ballet and be in Swan Lake!!!"
>signs up for a class and assumes he'll get to dance a lead in Swan Lake after one lesson
>sucks at everything compared to the students who have taken many classes and gradually realizes that memorizing even something like the different positions is hard on its own, never mind the actual act of dancing
>Even gets an injury on his first day and is told that ballet can be painful
>realizes in the end that he won't be a professional ballet dancer with one lesson and that it takes years and years of hard work, storms out of class all pissed
>the teacher follows him and explains why ballet takes hard work and convinces him to keep his love of dance even if he can't be in Swan Lake

So, for people who watched both the French and English versions, what version did you like better?

I watched the US English dub, UK/Canada English dub and the French version and I am also fluent in French so no need for subtitles for me.

UK/Canada English dub > US English dub > original French version

I recommend either of the English dubs but the French version is still pretty good.
I like the UK/Canada English dub very slightly more than the US English dub, though.

>we want Disney audience!
>>
>>94868446
The film really wants the Disney audience.

Which is unusual considering that most foreign animated films are often stereotyped of being for the arthouse audience and resembling Studio Ghibli films more than Disney films but it's not unheard of.

And even Disney wanted their audience to get into Studio Ghibli films back when Disney was the one releasing the English dubs of the Studio Ghibli films.

Also, the UK/Canada English dub was produced alongside the French version so they could simultaneously release it in France, the UK and Canada, in a similar case to how Space Dandy had it's English dub made alongside the original Japanese version so they could release a dubbed episode right after said episode's Japanese version comes out in Japan.

The US English dub was made a bit later, since they replaced some voices, some songs and changed the title, but it was more or less identical to the UK/Canada English dub.

Yeah well I work in adult images and stuff so it's not like I can say "oh how innocent check this out", people will know exactly what it is- specifically the ballet one in this thread

Inspiring my fellows by stating that Feason does their art with a goddamned MOUSE and is better than pretty much my entire group of friends.

You have a group of friends composed by fanartists?
>>
>>94884112
Some of us do.
>>
>>94884112
No. I have friends who are artists. One has a webcomic, the other just does it for fun, and another has a Tumblr for pixel art, but her drawn stuff is rather nice too. I'm the fucker lagging behind, practicing every day so I might one day start taking pornographic commissions or at least contributing to a drawthread.

I'm not saying it's not possible, I just thought that the people involved in that stuff would be completely used to the idea of smut, porn, r34, etc.

The Weinsteins (not the company, but the same people, Harvey and Bob) also made the English dub of Princess Mononoke back when they were with Miramax and Miramax was still owned by Disney.
They actually got Neil Gaiman to write the English dub script, it was so great that the English dub was given a limited release in Japan with Japanese subtitles, and the DVD and Blu-ray was released with an English dub with Japanese subtitles as a bonus, kinda like how Square Enix games sometimes get International Version re-releases in the English dub with Japanese subtitles.

Princess Mononoke could've gone the Doogal or Arabian Knight route by butchering the movie to be more kid-friendly if Hayao Miyazaki didn't interfere and force the film to be released uncut and unedited even in it's dubbed form.
The English dub of Princess Mononoke is more or less faithful to the Japanese but they did some minor changes to be flow better in spoken English dialogue.

And from watching the English dub of Ballerina, the quality and style of the English dub of Ballerina is more in line with Princess Mononoke's English dub rather than Doogal or Arabian Knight.

I think the reason why the US English dub of Leap! is better than expected because the UK English dub was more-or-less a faithful translation of the French version with some minor changes to flow better with the spoken English language.
Again, The Weinstein Company didn't go the Doogal route and change the movie outright by doing an inaccurate and reference-packed dub, but they went the Princess Mononoke route by presenting a faithful translation of the original French version albeit with minor changes.

There is a UK/Canada English dub but they only have minor differences with each other.

I actually loved both English dubs of Ballerina over the original French version. And that's saying a lot since I still love the French version.

It was a good movie that could have been excellent, had it been able to shed itself of kid film cliches and went all-in on the dancing and competition aspects.

It' the curse of the CGI cartoon. Not yet cheap enough for truly indie films that can escape the family movie ghetto.

Only thing that really threw me off was the older woman that walked with a cane did not really have a voice that matched the character. She sounded way too early 20's.
>>
>>94887218
This movie was a bit more cliche than a standard Disney movie.

But I think the script could have been combed over a tad more. There were a few random things that made no sense or had no reason for happening like some near instant character personality shifts. Random characters saying some things that seemed very out of character for them.

And the repeating dream sequence, there could have been at least a little variation in them.

>>94887452
That was only in the English dubs.
If that bothers you, she has an older sounding voice in the original French version, but if you don't speak French, the only English subtitles apparently floating around are dubtitles based on the UK/Canada English dub, but said dubtitles are pretty accurate, though.
No fansubs circulating yet.

Also, don't expect this movie to be Studio Ghibli-levels in terms of being unique and in terms of scale.

It's still pretty good, though.
And as I mentioned, it's easily my favorite non-Japanese foreign animated film of last year.

>There were a few random things that made no sense or had no reason for happening
I think that's directly related to the need to make it a family film. They were distractions.

The movie didn't need to start at the orphanage, or a romantic subplot, or a silly villain. Take that fluff out and focus on the art, the struggle, and the rivalry, and it could have been Whiplash with ballet.

I would have liked Maddie Zeigler's character to have a bigger role. She was the most convincing character in the movie, and her performance was quietly authentic.
>>
>>94887908
The orphanage was pretty cliche

But I was mostly thinking of things like the rich girl being the main rival and then all of a sudden being her friend. Then the whole Felicie "you're not my mom!" outburst just sort of appeared out of nowhere and did not seem like her. Russian guy kind of vanishes after a point,

>>
>>94888153
Oh no, I hope this will still do well in the US.

I think it was merely because of the negative reputation that Harvey Weinstein made for himself when he reworked The Thief and the Cobbler and Doogal, and attempted to do the same to Princess Mononoke before Miyazaki stopped him.

Without wanting to cause the daily /pol/co/tumblr argument about gender roles, I'm pretty sure the movie being about ballerinas is going to do that anyway.

But single word titles like that are the style right now

Tangled
Frozen

Croods
Brave
Sing
Moana
Trolls
Storks
Cars

It's the typical American naming convention for animated films these days

Not at all.
>>
>>94881508
It's just the acting, they are either relying too much on their live reference or don't have any.

Japanese can't act at all for a western audience, so when you see their body language resemble something like the power rangers they are hitting their limits on how people actually move and don't know how to portray it in an idealized animation.
