Speaking of literal shelves, I need a new Detolf or Klingsbo soon. What are some good bookshelves I can get to replace my Target shit with at ikea? I know the BIlly and the Kallax are the standards, but any other just basic bookshelves? Anything enclosed so I could use it as both a bookshelf and a display case.

>Where is my For Asgard sequel??
You'll have to be satisfied Rodi's 'semi continuity' based books. Have you read Thor and Loki: Blood Brothers, it's just as good. He also did Astonishing Thor, which isn't quite as good but it's the story that gave us Alter Ego. And Thor going against Ego and The Collector is fun. I don't really recommend The Deviant Saga that much, but it's still pretty decent. Better than a lot of Thor books

Birthday next month. Can't decide if I want to try and continue a series I'll eventually get myself either way and ask for the Absolute Sandman or if I should try something new and as for either the iZombie or Rachel Rising omnibus instead since I'm not sure if I'd buy those on my own.

IKEA's FINNBY is as basic as it gets. They're good quality, will survive eternity but can only hold about 13kg/29lb, and they aren't very deep (24cm/9.4in). My Absolutes would fit exactly inside it (with about 2cm0.7in to spare), would they be any bigger, they would poke out.
If you plan to put regular books into them you'd probably have a hard time with stuff like artbooks, travelling albums etc.
Another thing about FINNBY you should know is that you should reeeeallly fix them to a wall. they may actually topple over if you put too much stuff at the tops. That problem doesn't exist with BILLY or KALLAX, they're massive enough.

BILLY are deeper (28cm/11in), absolutely no problems there and they're even more massive, practically indestructible (each shelf can carry 30kg/66lb), but a bit more pricey.
There's a cabinet-style version available that has glass doors. if you have the money, think about investing into that, they cost easily 4x as much as the regular one though and it's probably 8x as much as a FINNBY.

With KALLAX, keep in mind that they have no back wall. That makes them excellent room dividers though if you need that.

With the other IKEA choices, check the technical details of each shelf (scroll down to "product information), I don't really have any experience with them.
LIATORP, AVDALA, HEMNES, GERSBY... dunno, just check them out. If you actually visit an IKEA warehouse they should have display items there.

Anyone know the deal with that new New Gods omnibus coming in December? I was thinking of getting it but it's contents aren't clear. Some places have it listed as
>SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #133-139 and 141-148, NEW GODS #1-11, FOREVER PEOPLE #1-11, DC GRAPHIC NOVEL #4: THE HUNGER DOGS and a story from NEW GODS #6
While others say
>SUPERMAN'S PAL JIMMY OLSEN #133-139 and 141-148, THE NEW GODS #1-11, THE FOREVER PEOPLE #1-11, MISTER MIRACLE #1-18, plus later stories from NEW GODS #4 and DC GRAPHIC NOVEL #4.
So which is it? I'm assuming one of these is out of date but I can't find anything to confirm which.

Just came in the mail an hour ago.

Whoever replied to me that recommended me the Spider-Man stories I should get, thank you so much. I always enjoy coming in this thread to chat about which books I should get or look at what other people gotten. This is my first time getting an omni and can't wait to read it.
>>
>>94852067
it'd actually make sense not to put the Mister Miracle stories into that because they made a separate collection for that and I'm not sure the omni can even survive a reading in its full form, I actually see it break apart from its own weight.
Really can't tell you what's what, I'm happy I own the original 4 omni version.

Doors and extra shelves for BILLY are simply sold separately.

you have to install them yourself though. you also have to install the door handles yourself (at least my brother had to do that on his wardrobe and you don't want to see how that turned out), so you better have someone handy that knows how to do that shit or it ends an eyesore.

I thought I'd do something a bit different for Christmas this year. I decided to get my brother the Nedroid books and a print, and then thought to go from there. My sister would love Lackadaisy, but I'm not that close with my other brother. I know he likes Voltron and Rick and Morty, but nothing too specific.

So, any Voltron fans here? Any good art books or technical manuals or something like that I can get for my older brother? I know there's the Rick and Mort comics, but I was going to get him the art book for his birthday next month, so I don't want to drown him in Rick and Morty.

Menards was selling a similar bookcase for even cheaper prices a few months back but that might only be where I live.

Setting up book-cases for under 100 USD is getting harder and harder these days. Even second-hand shops don't have banged-up shit you can fix.

Bookshelf is an IKEA Billy, by the way. £15 for this white version (40cm wide, 106cm tall), and you can get ones that are twice as tall, twice as wide, and twice as tall and wide. White's cheapest, but all very reasonably priced.

Went for three of these to form a sideboard when I have them all set up, and the narrow width helps prevent any warping.

Bull. A lot of areas charge excessive amounts for planks. By the time you're done sanding, staining, sealing, drilling, and assembling; it's often cheaper for something already made. Even before you consider the amount of labor put into it. In areas with a high demand for wood its really hard to find knot-free boards that won't split. Even if you're really careful with them.

We're moving into more /diy/ territory if it still exists. But not every region has the same prices or resources.
>>
>>94863210
I'm planning out my own shelf (just need to go back to my parents farm for all the right tools). Going to use MDF cause that's strong and cheap. Not going to cost much at all.

Sure, if you are going to go with high grade plywood or planed hardwood it will fly up in price. But we are talking economy style here, and MDF is fine, you are painting it anyway.

I'm not a carpenter. I've done little else but repair or strip a couple of pieces and retreat them. Or reinforce wood with small pieces when things go hellishly wrong.

I'd just rather buy a fully made piece than risk putting things on painting fiberboard. It's not that things would go wrong, it's that I don't know they wouldn't.

Or I could spend the time making several better pieces and selling them locally to make up for the cost or make an outright profit. People really love handmade stuff.

Sugar & Spike. It's a real blast. It ran in a stupid anthology alongside some aggressively mediocre stuff. I'm really, really, REALLY tempted to buy the Alabaster Mimi books...her (?) style is so decorative, almost like a lace doily but with a very solid understanding of the fundamentals of cartooning. Also she's one of those creators, like rege, for instance, whose style is immediately recognisable as hers and no-one else's. Plus the books look so damn nice....
>>
>>94893151
I was actually talking about Alabaster, written by Caitlin Kiernen. You mean Mimi and the Wolves by Alabaster. Coincidentally, I also have that.

I definitely recommend it. Really fantastic story. I'm glad I bought the first three at the same time because I would have been unable to wait for the second volume. I grabbed a print from her site too and she was pretty nice in emails. Definitely worth the pickup. Go buy the three now.

>Tfw one of the founders of FP and Titan shows you glorious b & w pages and character designs for a series of James Bond gn's based totally on the original books--you know where he drives one of those old rolls Royce's with the cylindrical front chassis, kind of looks like an elongated oil drum (not a car expert myself, obviously...) such glorious brushwork, like a realistic version of the loose-ish slightly more cartoony stuff he does now. Also saw unpublished Sienkiewickz and Bisley sketches.

But lets be real, for a looong time his storytelling was pretty bad, Arkham Asylum was lotsa paint smears and shadows, uninteresting talking heads etc...I get it wasn't supposed to be an "adventure comic" but guys like Xaime or Bagge can make a talking-heads sequence look like...well, poetry. And Wild Orchid was even worse, like McKean just wanted to show off his airbrush skill and mastery of the human form (or just call it, "mastery of photo-reffing"). His stuff now (especially b & w brushwork is a lot better but c'mon >>94890438, I bought the first Black Orchid and Sandman #1 when they came out so I'm hardly a fucking "summerfag", just someone who thinks very deeply about my passion. Never been so happy to get a book. This is my first big /co/ purchase, never bought an absolute or omni before. But god damn it feels nice. I've never really admired a book for how well It's made before but the bindings in this are extremely high quality and it's kinda surprising how much that pleases me. I do believe I'm hooked on Absolute / Library editions.

Also pleased that this book doesn't have skewed images, i read that complaint about the first volume, which was origionally printed on a different sized page. So maybe it's just that one that is skewed and if it is i don't care cauae i already have that one in origional size. Volume 1 and 2 are areiving today amazon and 3 is shipping as well.

Aside from being glad I picked them up, I'm now really pissed that WorldWatch didn't continue. Anyone know why? How much and where do i sign up?

I just found out about 2000ad`s 'submission' policy. You have to write a four page comic that has a major twist that the editors didn't see coming. If they like that 4 page story they will LOOK at a story you want to piblish through them. Otherwise you can go to hell. Even Moore and Gaiman had to go through that process. They don't fuck around
>>
>>94897926
Yep, and that's why they managed to cultivate such a good crop of writers over the years. Write short and creative stories with very limited space.

sorry to pollute the thread with so fuck of samefagging but Kabuki is my favorite comic ever. the early stuff is great for historical perspective and a better take of Japanese culture than /a/ can ever get, cause they don't acknowledge their racism or other historical flaws. The later stuff takes what Sienkiewicz and McKean to the next level and makes fine arts the story and tells it through that. I've gone to some art gallaries and seen people attempt to make 'comic' pages a display. but they all fail cause they are just making a comic page, not a work of art as well. Mack does both

Most painted comics aren't cartooning, they're fucking illustration, dude. If you like that stuff then fine. It amazes me how people get so triggered because someone doesn't like something they themselves enjoy. Nothin' but love for ya, Alex!
>>
>>94905030
>And lets be honest, 90% of painted comics are cancer
lets be honest, you have clearly shown you have zero artistic taste
>>
>>94909258
Whatever, I'm not saying it's "bad art" (just completely uninteresting to me) but if anything stops the pace dead of (most) comics, it's a painted one. Everyone who wrote for (print) TCJ bitched about painted comics and their detrimental effect at least once.
Besides, taste is entirely objective. Now Alex, can you PLEASE fuck off? Taking photos of your bodybuilder friends in cosplay is a sure-fire way to distance the reader from a comic. Put the paints away, you can be an interesting artist . Occasionally.

I'm the biggest The Dude stan there is but even I think that fully painted comic he did was missing something.

Oh, Austin English is pretty cool, though!

>just completely uninteresting to me
you find good art uninteresting?

I know taste is subjective but you are making an arguement against good art and for boring minimalist cartooning. That's fine where it fits but many complex ideas just can't be expressed like that. People like Dave McKean and David Mack use ALL the tools of their trade to express an idea. They will use minimalist cartooning right next to a realistic painted depiction to juxtapose ideas. When they use paint it is for a reason, not just for pretty art, they are causing the reader to think about what they are reading.

There is a very good reason why these people are highly praised by artists and writers alike
>>

>It amazes me how people get so triggered because someone doesn't like something they themselves enjoy
Said the guy that claimed "90% of painted comics are cancer. Oh and judging by the following post it seems you mean Alex Ross. Very clever anon, very clever of you. >>94909555
No such thing as "good" or "bad" art. Just interesting and uninteresting.
Personally I think that page is just boring as sin and sticking objects to pages as if it's some crazy avant-garde development just makes me cringe desu.
Again, I find Mack boring as fuck, more of an illustrator, a maker of pretty pictures, than a cartoonist/accomplished visual storyteller. McKean's gotten better at that but I much prefer his loose b & w brushwork to his painted stuff.

Apart from maybe McKean it's just fandom who praise guys like Mack.

Do you seriously gave no self awareness? You sound so pretentious it's funny, you unironically think you're smart when in reality, you're quite dumb. You make these dismissive stupid statements while generalizing. And see a specialist about your Alex Ross obsession, it's unhealthy.
>>

Oh mate I totally know I'm an idiot. Only a twat would spend so much money on comics and obsessing over Alex Ross. Also guilty as charged, I'm probably the most pretentious person I know. I've even stopped liking Rick And Morty because it's popular now. I hate popular things, probably where my obsession with Alex Ross springs from, or at least that's what my psychiatrist says.

Assuming you're not just exaggerating to make a point, I disagree with that. I am an objectively worse artist than Mike Mignola, for example. My art is bad by any measurable quality, and his art is good by most. He uses shadows and negative space better than I could ever hope to.

I am pretty much done with arguing with you, cause you just don't seem to understand art, you weren't taught to think about what you are looking at and thus you pass it over without analysis. I just have one question to ask, have you read the Bendis/Mack Daredevil run? Not many artists are skilled enough to get across the amount of trama the boy has gone though, it's extremely heartbreaking. This isn't the page I was trying to show, but it does it well. The page I was meaning is drawn in light pencil marks, it depicts how the boy killed his father to save Daredevil. The light and minimalist pictures juxtaposed next to the painted Urick really get across that these are extremely tramatic memories that are being suppressed and Urick is barely getting them from this boy.

It's fine if you don't LIKE how it's drawn, but to not understand that part means you don't analyze how the art is telling the story. In this sense the art is telling the ineffable part of the story (as IMHO good art should be, it shouldn't be used purely as a descriptive expression, it should get at the deeper parts of the story).
>>

>>94914667
It's reinforcing the trama. It's meant as a long pause to hold the note. It's showing us the kid is frozen in time.
>end of the line, mister
>end of the line, mister
through out the story the kid is stuck on repeat. His trama is making him unable to face what happened and move forward. So the repetition is a very useful tool in this book.

I don't always agree in reusing art, but sometimes it's a very useful tool

>>94914583
>Pretty much done arguing
>Keeps arguing
Look, don't cast aspersions on my art education; that's something I will not stand still for; I'm grounded and knowledgeable in a LOT more than just comic art, mate. Humblebrag incoming was told I got the third highest mark in the country for my art history thesis on Berthe Morisot, so, please, don't pull the "you obviously don't understand; it's too deep for you".
I said 90% of painted comics are cancer, and I stand behind that. However it does NOT mean they I have no respect for any technical ability for someone like Mack--I certainly cannot paint like him, I'm patently awful with colour...but again, in your image we have the obvious photo-reffing, which I have never said is a BAD THING IN COMICS--only when it is blatantly obvious. The best photo-referencers subsume the stuff under their own style, look at Toth, Rude, Corben and Joe Kubert--it wasn't GLARING. But here I feel that it is and it just "pulls me out" of that special "reading-as-looking" experience only great comics provide.
And I haven't read Mack's DD, only Kabuki vols 1-3 because a mate really rates his stuff so I gave it a go. So as I said in upper comment, not "bad" art by any means, just uninteresting to me and not the best example of medium specificity by a long run.
I don't mind arguing, I'd just rather be civil about it, y'know? I know this is 4chan but, fuck, a little manners goes a long way....

>>94914731
There would be better ways of doing it, though, however I quite like the way the kid's drawings lead the eye through the page. Plus I admit to being prejudiced against fancy (and oftentimes unnecessary) page breakdowns (or "paneling" as you like to call it around here). That works but the "what happened, Timmy" panel is so superfluous as to be almost useless. And the pairing of Timmy with the guy on the left (the therapist?) really serves no purpose, in fact I think if Mack had...

So throwing stones is discouraged.
>>
>>94857888

I really like your taste hombre. Keep up the good work.
>>
>>94857888
you have great taste my man, this is what I like to see
>>
>>94919296
Yeah, like for instance taking two and a half hours scanning and storytiming a recent popular alternative ongoing title that several anons had requested because copies are going for like 80 dollars plus? And doing the same for the previous issue the night before?Yeah, i'm just an awful fuckin' blight on this board without 35+ years of deep involvement in comics and about 20 years of serious collecting and con attendance. It was insensitive of me to say 90% of painted comics are cancer but don't fucking pretend it was the cancer reference and not the fact that I stated that most painted comics are, for the most part, mere illustration, with bad breakdowns that muddy the storytelling that actually upset anons.

Visited my two LCSes today, here's what I got:
Dark Crystal #6, standard cover and the variant
Lady Mechanika back issue variant, and the most recent single variant
XO-Manowar TPB vol 5
3 Supergirl back issues from her 2005 run
Supergirl New52 TPB vol 4
Wonder Woman TPB vol 6
Batgirl Cassandra Cain TPB
Most recent Lady Death release, Merciless Onslaught #1

Pretty gud haul if I can say so myself. Also got two more lantern rings, the orange one and the white one, getting close to having them all.

Hah, that was actually pretty funny. Because I don't read modern capes so have very little frame of reference.

it means you're an obnoxious cunt.

You know what's weird to me? I've messaged quite a few artists asking about prints and such. Every single one has responded to me. That has not happened in any single other industry. I get ignored by guys that make toys, movies, books, and whatever else all the time, but I haven't gotten ignored by a single comic artist yet. So thanks for being cool, guys.

Weird question, but what is the cover of your Doom Patrol Book Three? I've looked online, and there seems to be two covers floating around, one with the candle-maker and one with an american flag and Danny the Bus
>>
>>94924917
Are your books arranged in a certain order? Can you put the Hellboy LE's next to the BPRD hardcovers you have.

PS. Thanks for the storytimes
>>
>>94926815
Planet Love is the front cover, Candlemaker is the back.
>>94926841
It's arranged by book height. Makes it more visually appealing than otherwise.
>>
>>94927115
Thanks man, I just ordered a copy and was hoping it was the right one, and not a mislabelled old collected edition

I have posted it in many shelf threads. Have been complimented and ridiculed for ny taste. Which is fine, i fully acknowledge i have some bad books cause a lot is dicount bin trial and error. Still, I'm happy with most of my collection. Some hidden gems, at least by /co/ standard

Such a pretty book.
I really need to pick up the dark crystal trade
>>
>>94928411
Issue one is kinda bad. It wasn't actually supposed to be published. He did it as a sample page and wanted to have Bendis actually do the art for the book. But Bendis kept talking him into doing sample stories until he hadthe first issue done. So there are some clear problems with the beginning. He made it when he was 21 so there are also a lot of hang ups on what he thought comics were in the 90s. And his yellow feaver is pretty glaring. Still, it becomes one of the best thought out and layered books i have read

Personally, I bought mine because I liked it and I want to be able to share it with other people.
It's not a bad book, it's just wacky as shit, so I don't know where the irony would stem from.

I've popped it open a few times when my friends and I are drunk to show them the giant sperm.
>>
>>94939427
What is everyones favorite books to show people when you have them over for drinks? Either to shock them or just show off something funny/interesting

For me
>Sunstone
>Thor For Asgard
>Skydoll
>Requiem Vampirr Knight
If they are a wolverine fan (cause almost everyone seems to be)
>X-23 by Liu and Takada

Aphrodite IX is great for cheesecake. Best ass in comics and I'm not saying that lightly.
Sunstone is the lesbian BDSM comic the other anon stated. It's pretty good and has me laughing out loud reading it. Great nude scenes.
Danger girl for silly james bond fun
And well...pretty much all X-men, for cheesecake Claremonts X-treme X-Men is heavy on cheesecake and i think it's a lot better than most people say. Not as good as his origional run but he still understands the characters better than most writers.
Tarot Witch of the Black Rose is silly and can vary from great comedy to just so stupid you don't want to ever read it again.
Any Rothic comics. Drawn by The Assman or Dawn McTeigue they have a lot of filler 'poetry' pages but i like them. Not for everyone so download an issue of any of her stuff before you read it. But lots of nudity and sexy women. Brilliant art all around.

If you want me to go on i can but these are my main recs.
>>
>>94943713
Thanks for those too. I'll check into these.
>>
>>94943831
If you don't mind some horror and gore, then Lady Death is some of the best cheesecake out there. If you like steampunk then go for Lady Mechanika. Also Fathom is good too.
>>
>>94943342
Maybe I don't so tell me what's ironic about giant telekenetic sperm?
>>
>>94944005
>Lady Mechanika
Am i weird for thinking this isn't cheesecake. I mean she is beautiful but almost always fully covered and not in latex close fitting style. It's more....fashioncake?

Anywho, i enjiy the writing and story too. Hence why it's on my pull list
