I've never ever seen the Little Mermaid before, I've heard of it and seen bits of it, and I'm watching it right now.
So there's this scene where Ariel's arguing with her dad and he explicitly states SHE'S 16, then she goes to kiss and marry a prince from the surface.
Am I getting this right? Ariel is actually underwater JAILBAIT and Disney were OKAY with this!?
Sixteen was legal in mermaid times.
Yes. This is how fairy tales are written, and this film came out in 1988, well before subverting fairy tale tropes was a whole thing like it is today, so they were more or less playing it straight. And in an old fashioned fairy tale setting getting married at 16 is normal. That song the daughters of Triton sing at the start? It's Ariel's debut. It's a classic coming out party celebrating her reaching marriagiable age. Snow White was 14 in her movie and she also ran off with her prince. Even so, Disney still tried to make Ariel a strong female protagonist so it came off as kind of progressive for its time. Because for once the princess actually had a little personality and a bit of spunk, and at the time that was enough.
But yeah, by today's standards the movie is a little iffy to rewatch.
