Oh I see what you're saying. I don't mean in drawing technique, I mean in the design of the characters themselves.

>>94822236

okay I'm looking at this again, and..... I think her torso is a tidbit long. It's hard to say for sure, but I'm imagining her hand down at her side and it doesn't go 1/3rd of the way down her thigh. Maybe if you shortened her torso, you'd have more space for leg. I'm mentally counting her ribs and it seems like she has too many. There's almost as much space from her vag to her mid-torso hourglass-waist as there is from said waist to the bottom of her tits, so that leaves even more torso above that.
>>
>>94822605
I get it now. Thread transition. We both linked our posts from the other thread. I just duplicated my post from that thread to this one so it appears in two places at once.

Nope. Not all the time. Some stuff gets attention, like, people really seem to like my Beetlejuice comics. But my illustrations don't do it for anyone. Maybe they're just boring. I mean, they are technically competent but maybe they lack qualities that draw people to them.

Possibly. I'm posting on DA, tumblr, twitter, instagram, pixiv and facebook.

However, I also work full time and live in Hawaii (the worst time zone) and am pretty sure I'm posting at bad times.

I also am not posting frequently enough either. I'm not doing anything that I should expect to be blowing up or anything. And I do gain a couple of people for every decent post that I make so it's not completely hopeless.

I understand that more popular artists are putting out a lot of work consistently and that they built their audience over time. Unless they are super good painters who draw trendy stuff then they usually catch fire.

Oh this is from a comic tournament that ended earlier this year.

I'm currently working on running the sequel tournament. Right now I have no real projects other than trying to come up with little short comics to draw to build up some kind of library. That's mostly what the short Beetlejuice comics have been about.

I also did a couple for Inspector Gadget, and one for that Boku No Hero OC trend that was going around.

Honestly? It depends on what you like to draw. I study artists I like and their techniques and linework. I emulate it and learn what I can, incorporate what I need and discard the rest.

I follow and study A LOT of hentai artists because they draw the cutest girls (of course)

For comics I study manga and European comics because they tend to have the most diversity. American independent comics are getting there though.

It's all about consuming as much media that you can learn from as possible. If it interests you, grab comics about it and try to figure out the mechanics of what the artist is doing.

And then practice. Forever.

He looks like a beetle, especially with that giant horn.

>I wasn't sure where to start

You could do a classic "goes on a journey and recruits a band of interesting friends along the way" story. It's worked for The Last Unicorn and The Hobbit. The cartoony insect look would allow you to play around with character concepts in fun ways. You could have a group of tiny ants that all have the same name and can't tell each other apart. You could have a vain moth princess that insists that she's a butterfly thank you very much, a stickbug whose an expert fencer (because good luck trying to stab a line) stuff like that.

Go high adventure in the insect kingdom. Call it High Adventure in Low Places or something like that.

That explains a lot. You've got a lot of practicing and brainstorming to do before you can just DO it and expect it to have any rhyme or reason. There are certainly guidelines for making good looking characters though. Things like the proportion and distance of the facial features, that sort of thing. Why don't you just show us what you can do right now?

But I don't want make new characters (not yet) I just want to learn how to draw these characters. I already try to use the typical circles and lines, but they still looking weird.

Lineralism has spun 180 degree and now furiously fights everything it once supported and opposed by the right - leaving us in the ridiculous situation that the left now want to ban porn in multiple capacities all over the world while conservative parties defend it.

> I also heard you can get blue line paper with the right dimensions on them. Do they come in various sizes as well?
Yes, but most may be geared towards standard US comic sizes.

> I'm thinking of using something like A3 or A2 for my comic pages before scanning them in to digitally finish them.
A2 is going to be crazy huge; A3 would be about the largest you want to go. Depending on your scanner, A4 would be best.

Figure out what size you want to print at, and draw on paper that's a step up from that. Eg, print on A5, draw on A4. Though if you want to be sure to include Bleeds etc, draw in a B5 area on A4 paper.

i have always wanted to do semi-realistic insect fantasy adventures just because they fit the archetypes so well. ants are totally gnomes, bees are elves, roaches are some kind of priests that dwell in the houses of the gods and pick up their artifacts.. beetles are clearly knight types.. and youd have some grasshopper hero, wielding a pin sword a roach sage gave him.. and it'd all be great.

Bug fantasy is horribly underused especially when compared to mice. I might have to do something like that if I can fit it into whatever the theme is of the next challenge.

Would anyone be interested in the next theme being high adventure and bugs? Because if I manage to win again I think I'll make that the theme. Anyone else entering the current challenge want to make a pact to make high adventure and bugs the next theme?

I have seen some beetles around since they are a bit common here and is a sunlight thing. They usually look black until you see them under the sun, which gives them some nice blue tones. It happens with some other bugs too but beetles are big enough to be noticeable more easy.

As for Kamen Riders, at this point I actually wonder which color is missing.

Haven't read through the entire thing yet but I think it's pretty cute.

You really need to do something about colors, value and contrast, as the other anon pointed out. Both the cat and the fox blend in the background too easily, and it's important that your font is in a clear to read color compared to the background. The white font on the light blue sky is the worst, but the green here is also not easy on the eyes. Green in general doesn't fit the rest of the picture, but if you're going to use it pick a darker color for this frame.

one thing about metal shading: because it's so damned shiny, even the shaded side still has reflection of whatever it's facing. that means that on a normal object, you might make the shadow go all the way to the edge, but on metal or something else super shiny, the shadow will stop short of the edge and have a lighter rim

Paneling, composition, and structure is good. Feels like the opening shot of a movie.

On to the nitty gritty:

Why are there so many broken boxes? If you look along the left edge of the page, they're very apparent and weird.

It looks like you drew this on a computer. Here's a tip: Copy those colored frames on the wall, paste, and shrink them down to fit into the second panel. It'll look consistent.

You really need to figure out how to do straight lines. The wall in the second panel clearly curves awkwardly. And the rug is very jagged and unpleasant to the eye.

The room looks very barren. For example, there's usually a border on walls where it meets the floor. You could've drawn that. Or just more details all around.

Did you purposely want her to sleep with no pillow?

You do this fine in the second panel, but in the third panel, the blanket doesn't really form to her shape. If you follow the edge of the blanket, it should wrap around her body. Instead, it makes it look like she's just a torso that's standing upright.

You should look up some breast tutorials. The way they're drawn here makes her look very stiff.

While there are more anatomy mistakes and whatnot, they are the kind of things you learn with practice, so I won't point them out.

So just keep at it. You got the vision, you just need the technical skills.

>>94825381 is a character (Witch Eater Gretel) from the story. I call it Grand Tale. It is essentially a Fantasy/Fairy Tale cross section with Post Apocalyptic Themes and Shounen Mechanics.

Basically, the world of giants exist in a cloud layer above this fantasy world (ala Jack and the Beanstalk), one day the entire cloud layer is destroyed and all of the giants fall to the surface like bombs obliterating it.

The story essentially follows the survivors as they try to salvage what is left of the world.

I suppose that is true for American comics. But this is based on Boku No Hero where at least three major "good" heroes literally burn their opponents to death and the main character has the potential to murder anyone with his fists.

I like powers that are basic but have wide applications depending on the creativity of the character. Her power isn't really "teleportation" it's "substitution." She switches objects or herself, hence the superhero name: Switch Theory

An example of a storyline would be Pinot (pick related.) Geppetto mad with grief spends all of his time in the woods making half dolls that are bound to trees. He does this because he doesn't want to risk any of them turning into humans (like Pinocchio who is killed in the disaster) or leaving him, like Pinot who left to go in search of Pinocchio. I was thinking about how to best transfer creativity as power in a magic system, but the pitfall I keep encountering is that you can be creative with just about any type of magic. Particularly, in acclaimed manga like Jojo or My Hero Academy, the magic itself is interesting but also defined by new, creative application from it's user. This was what inspired me, but it's where I struggle too.

I want to narrow down how a creativity would work as the "mana". My working idea is that ink, like inside a ballpoint pen, would be a valuable resource in the special world (unnamed). The royalty would all be literate, could construct proper runes/sentences for efficient magic, and have access to complex forms of creativity such as dance, realism-style paintings, and songwriting. Dancing would require ink on the body, and a violinist would use a bow dipped in ink. The peasants and tribal barbarians would only know practical applications, or not understand ink's potential at all.

Not sure if I'll ever find the willpower to create a website and transfer these ideas from notebooks to pages. Right now, a system like this feels too all-encompassing and intimidates my current skill as a writer. Not looking for anyone to write stuff for me, but was hoping for some insight on any merit to the idea, or more brainstorming to be done.

>>
>>94842524

My advice would be to pick a definite source of the magic or a focus (i.e. ink) for the magic and build out from there. Think like Full Metal Alchemist where they are using "alchemy" but that's just the base for a ridiculously wide array of applications.
>>
>>94842524
It kind of works. As a creative I feel like creativity is already like mana, it runs out crazy easily and then you just feel weak as balls.
I think you could also just establish that magic works on a surface-area kind of basis, such that the more complex it is the stronger it is. Blunt, uncreative spells are just weak, and flourish gives them more power in the same way that the crazier the straw is, the faster the stuff in the straw will change temperature compared to a thicker one with equal volume.

oh or make it like fullmetal's alchemy, where you have to be super mentally involved to do anything complex (like make organisms or split atoms, etc) and thus the more creative you are, the more you can do like the Creator

Thanks for the input. What do you think of the protagonists entering the "ink-world" with pens from school, and becoming acclaimed heroes? Too much of a stretch?
Also, I have no idea how the "special world" would be entered. My working idea was an our-world researcher who was drawn to life by the actual big bad, and unwillingly connects the worlds through squid ink... (kind of weak right now)
>>
>>94842700
the problem with the ink concept is that it's pure metaphor, and it's hard to accept imagery as fueling anything useful. In real life ink is pigment suspended in fat or petrochemical, and sometimes a thing that comes out of a cephalopod. It kind of reminds me of Read or Die where random cerebral things are conduits for power, like paper, music, an electrical generator.. and a few less thematic ones like intangibility.
At the very least, if there's an ink-world, I want an explanation about how IT is the source of our writing implements, which are "a lesser imitation of the true power of the pen and ink"
because if it's the other way around, and we invented pens but there's a magical world based around them, that's "clocks floating in the time vortex" level silly.
>>
>>94842700
There is actually an entire Original Character Tournament based on a similar concept, of which I've participated 4 times. Each iteration had a different method of getting the artists to the alternate world. Paper Dolls, Cubes, Etc.

Anything would work really. Something I would recommend watching is Night Watch and Day Watch to get ideas on how to cross integrate more than one world.

Lewis is given a house by his parents to rent out and use it to create income because the family business is owning property and renting out homes. He gets there expecting the house to be empty but finds Kat, the werewolf girl, living there for free.

So instead of kicking her out, he will have her stay with him but because that house is now his business he will have to help her get a job so that she can pay rent.

The comic will have a lot of fan service but no nudity... in one version. I'm still mulling over what to do for an uncensored version. Naturally the censored version will be posted here and various places.

Its hard coming up with a cool name for a character I want to design. I saw this on the super powers wikia and thought it would be cool to use in a story.
I was thinking the envisioner, but thats a little too close to the vision from marvel comics.

The character either uses an Alias or just sticks to his real name I guess.

>>94844628

I'd like there to be an excuse for the fanservice besides the "oops, I left the door open" I've seen in a million anime. Like, maybe Kat's actively fucking with Lewis. Maybe she thinks it's necessary to do that so he won't kick her out. Maybe she sleeps naked and Lewis is a creep who wants to peek on her. Maybe she sleeps naked and Lewis was dared to take a picture of her sleeping. Really, any premise is fine so long as there is one besides "What a clumsy accident!"

It's a beach house and it's pretty hot so she lounges about with little to no clothing. He just walks in because he expects nobody there. The start isn't entirely original, I will admit that, but it's straightforward and allows me to get to the meat of the conflict.

A broke hot girl is living in your house, do you kick her out or do you let her stay and help her become a paying tenant?

There's also how she repays him for his kindness. If you catch my drift.

okay, actually, if he shows up and she's ALREADY there, then it's not like those examples I gave, the classic "guy lives a boring life, but a cuh-razy girl shows up, insists on living with him, and turns that life upside-down!" trope (which I love). It's more like.. the ones.. where he finds her already there. and that is great.
>>
>>94845038
I hate to be nitpicky or sound like a jerk, but grammatically, there should be a question mark after the 'oh, and Adventurer,' not an exclamation mark.

The way it is, it seems like he's loudly stating the sentence rather than calling out to him/her.
>>
>>94845543

It's actually a really common thing. People own homes and rent out rooms to other people. His family owns apartment buildings and land that various things are built on. They want him to learn the family business so they give him a home and tell him to make a profit.
>>

Man, rarely do I read a plot premise and think to myself "fuck, why didn't I think of something like that"

That idea has some serious potential, especially considering your skill level. I just hope you'll actually do it and don't let it rot in the permanent planning stage.
>>
>>94844695
yeah basically it's more of a proportion thing. She's proportioned like a relatively normal woman, maybe on the tall side, and he's proportioned like a regular young man.. so they should be a lot closer in size. if he's a shrimp or she's an amazon, the sizes of things like the heads should be different. I'm not nearly as good an artist as your artist here, but that much clearly appears wrong.

No plenty of them do. I have a coworker who's mom lives with a couple and they pay the couple rent to stay there. I've also seen plenty of ads for it and have heard some people in similar situations. i feel like this is a stupid but important question...

when starting a long-form webcomic that will have detail compareble to pic related (wich is a meme that i did not draw, i know it's obvious but i want to make it clear) should one go with full color illustration or something monochrome?

i know that ultimately its up to me but i don't want to quit half way through because the workload is too much. i know making a comic is a commitment but i feel like color is a lot of work for one person and if you start black-and-white you can't really swap to color without it being a jarring change.

so i got to make a choice.... any advice? perhaps a simple shading style will be ok in fully color?
>>
>>94848070
>i know that ultimately its up to me but i don't want to quit half way through because the workload is too much
If this is your concern even before starting the comic, you'd better drop any long stories you have in mind and start with a short one or two for practice. It's also the best way to realize your shortcomings in terms of writing, composition, panelling and so on without diving into a huge project you'd want to redo/restart after a year or two.

Also post your art, it'll be easier to answer your questions.

Post apocalypse fiction has been running strong since the Victorians. As society gets more and more industrialized and automated the individual feels he has less and less control over his environment and projects these feelings of powerlessness onto society as a whole. The slight uptick in individual freedom caused by the information age saw a decline in apocalyptic stories, but with google trying to tighten controls over the internet I expect a surge in apocalypse in a few years.

This is why I loved New Vegas so much. Other Fallout games give you the feeling the bombs fell like a week ago. New Vegas gave you the feeling that society had really started to rebuild.

I'm trying to do something like that with Metal Animals http://www.capeworldcomics.com/comic/metal-animals-1/ . I want to really give the feeling that their society can stand on its own without constantly referring back to the plague war that spawned it.

Could you take a look and tell me if the lore is going okay?

They are just very adamant people who refuse to improve and disregard any help we have tried to give, which is kind of against the very purpose of this thread. And that only on the actual webcomic aspect.

We are also 99.9% sure they are both pedos. Well CF 100%. CF is also infamous for bringing some weird -and plain wrong- opinions on menstrual cups, mothers and daughters sharing fleshlight being cute, and panties being more unhygienic than going commando. Seriously when even dewd dislikes CF you know he got some shit.

I side with those people who feel that fallout 3 was probably originally meant to take place much closer to the bombs dropping, but they were pressured to make it a more distant sequel instead. the original games were much earlier in the timeline and even they had a lot more rebuilt

3 was just all kinds of weird from the perspective of the lore. Enclave taking orders from a computer. The Brotherhood acting goody two shoes. Another strain of FEV crops up years after the Master was waxed because. GECKS are now reality altering superbombs.

I will say 3's story was better than 4 though. Nothing will ever feel as anticlimactic as 4's ending.

Took a look at Exits, and there's not a lot I can say on it because the story is just starting. The art looks wonderful. I'm not sure I'm feeling the characters though. You have the serious one, the "dude weed" one, and the singularity geek one but they don't really feel like a group. I'm also afraid you're relying too much on weed and weed guy not giving a shit for humor.

Do you know a lot about conspiracy/cryptic/X-files stuff? I highly recommend listening to the podcast Monstertalk. They're basically your guys IRL.

Do you know where you're going to go with their cryptid sighting? If one half your comic is going to be comedy the other half is going to be investigation. You got a good handle on how that's going to play out?

Pic related is Ms. Cryptic, a paranormal investigator and educator who happens to the Flatwoods Monster + Mothman from my own stuff at http://www.capeworldcomics.com/.

How do you think an audience would feel if one chapter, #1 and 3 were being built up to be great, strong people and heroes, and then next week 1 and 3 were giving into petty sins and losing fights while 2 and 4 were being the heroes and then the cycle continues?

To me it seems like this is fine writing to make them feel like flawed human beings since everyone has their vices, but I'm worried that an audience wouldn't like it if they couldn't count on their favorite to be a consistent perfect paragon

And of course they'd take turns so there's always at least ONE person the audience could cheer for in every individual issue

Personally, I can not have enough imitations of Junji Ito. Try to give it your own spin, though. But don't forget Ito is mostly about the storytelling and the pacing of it. That doesn't really factor in to what I just said. The point is you're aiming for a certain shape, and then you draw a different shape instead.. and those little errors pile up until the whole thing looks crummy. You have to get to the point where you can make the shapes you attempt to make. It takes practice
Right now howbout you draw us a nice circle, a square, i dunno maybe a diamond. an equilateral triangle

Whoa, semi-impressive. Was there a model used for this? Because it all looks really amazing with great perspective and shaping, except the upper legs which show none of that and seem to be an afterthought. >>
>>94863562
Well that's pretty close. The square's okay, but the left line is curved. The triangle isn't quite equilateral, the bottom face is shorter. The circle is skewed diagonally. The chaos emerald is pretty but the lines don't converge properly at all. Do you see what I'm talking about now? These are some of the issues holding you back from copying this cartoon you want to copy

>>
>>94864081
actually, when I said diamond, I meant like <> so you went above and beyond. You're right, drawing something like THAT without a reference is hard, you did well if you had no ref.
Basically I'm just saying you have to practice until you have good line control and everything starts being neat, symmetrical, and the shape you want it to be. Then it's just a matter of studying anatomy, learning the shapes of body parts, and bob's your uncle
>>
>>94864118
their society is basically a democracy that values efficiency and profit, but with modern business teachings about wages and workers rights.
they're led by a council of board members effectively, but you need to own stock to vote on them, and the more stock you own the more votes you get. I like corporatocracy, but it's still not quite what I want. i'll work with that and see what I can think up

this might be called a parliamentary plutocracy, a subset of aristocracy, but with democratic flavor sprinkled on. It depends on how much synecdoche you want to assign to the fact that only the rich decide who gets in, but those people themselves don't necessarily have to be rich (even if in practice they are)

I think your biggest problem is seeing the body as a 3D object.
Sorry, I haven't been following along, and if you're trying to emulate the style of the show, then I don't think my advice would be of any help to you, it's a little flat.
While your proportions are, almost at the right place, you don't give enough space for the limbs to move, and it might be easier to understand if you saw the dimension of the torso/limbs.
Any sort of drawing/study will help, but Loomis might be a little overwhelming. But I like Loomis and I don't know who else to suggest.
Try imagining the torso as a flour sack.

So I've got a question for anyone who's been doing a comic for a while:

Is it better to pencil up a bunch of pages before you then ink/colour/clean up your pages, or does it work better to finish each page as you go?

>>94874661

Pencil enough pages to complete an arc or a scene at the very least. That way you can go back and forth through it and see how it flows and make edits.

Only when you are at the ink to tone/color phase should you play with the idea of doing a series of pages or completing one page at a time. And even then I would do a time/cost analysis to see which is faster/easier for you.

For example. I find it much faster to ink all panels on one layer and then tone everything on another and then use the last layer(s) for overlay effects, touch-ups, etc. As opposed to doing everything for a single panel and then moving on to the next one. But that's just me.
