Background paintings and animation (probably up to cleanup) were done in traditional media if with "by hand" you mean that, but ink-and-paint and final composition were done digitally, which means a likely SD ceiling for the digital masters.

I'm not 100% sure this is the case for every scene though; this could be a Cowboy Bebop scenario and the Blu-Ray release will combine actual new transfers from film masters for some scenes, and shittier upscaled stuff for others.

The first season of the 2001 Justice League show is on BD from a clearly native HD source, since Samurai Jack premiered the same year it stands to reason it could've been produced in a HD pipeline but simply never released that way before now. CN was definitely producing shows in HD long before they began showing them that way, the entire run of Teen Titans (and most of their shows from the later 00s) were produced in widescreen hi-def but it took many years for uncropped versions to be released. Some still have never seen the light of day (Chowder's whole run is in HD on Hulu now and My Gym Partner's A Monkey too on Boomerang, but Flapjack's first two seasons in widescreen have only ever aired in Australia. + legally we will probably never ever see the HD version of Megas XLR)

Star Trek is very popular, so they can make the per-unit cost lower because they can manufacture and sell a lot more of them. This is why anime is so absurdly expensive, the audience is limited. And these things are ALWAYS much more expensive when they come out (because of course they milk those excited enough to pre-order for all they're worth) rather than later. They'll probably re-release it without the print in a standard case for $30
The stated SRP is on the high end of what the show is worth to me but still worth it because Warner Home Video almost NEVER releases any of the TV animation they own, much less on Blu-ray - and it's probably because they don't think they can turn a profit on it. It's weird how OLDER movies on film are actually the ones future-proofed for higher res, as almost every single film made today or in the past two decades were finished in 2K (even ones shot in 8K like GOTG 2) for the sake of cost and rendering times.
Eventually there's going to be a trend of them going back and re-rendering all of the effects in today's films in higher res and then using that to try to sell it to us again.
I don't have a 4K screen yet and probably a couple of hundred normal 1080p Blu-rays, and I can't imagine I'll ever end up upgrading many of them ever again, considering it's really not far off at all from what they show in the theater..

Guy from leddit here. I actually had started these after the finale months ago, but began to question if they'd really serve any purpose. After the HD remaster announcement, I posted what I had done in hopes that people who thought the DVDs were "perfectly fine" would see the difference. Feeling motivated, I finished the four or so I had left partially finished and called it a day.
