The Comics Code Authority discouraged the depiction of excessive bloodshed to the point that inkers working at Marvel were in the habit of handling blood as flats, i.e. solid fills of Higgins black India ink. In one issue of What The-?!, Wolverine is shocked to see what he takes to be red blood coming out of some bookkeepers he's slashed, only for one of them to brightly comment, "it's red ink, that's all we have running through our veins."

DC was less religious on that point but as the previous issue in China demonstrates, a particularly gory image of a guard ripped in half is only described in caption while the panel is a serene scenery shot of the temple and the surrounding greenery.

If this sounds like ancient history, it's worth noting the CCA didn't become defunct until about 6 years ago. However, by that point the remaining publishers in it had essentially ignored most of its proscriptions.
