I think Morty did that to Ethan because Ethan changing his plans led to Summer messing with the machine leading to Beth trying to solve things herself resulting in Morty's day away from Rick being about as headache inducing as his days with Rick.

I don't see why we should feel sad for Summer. Summer is a fucking lunatic. Are we forgetting that she kills people and creatures without remorse and even takes pleasure in it? She's emotionally unstable. And let's be honest she's not hot compared to others.
