Honestly I think that's sort of whats hurting her with Cio as well. One of the big problems with gold as XP systems is that players can easily game it. Some OSR stuff runs with the idea, LotFP's Death Frost Doom module has it so the players can skip the entire dungeon and split a decent chunk of gold by looting shit at the entrance.

I hope it's drawn out at least a little bit longer. Character death only really stings if you're attached to them. We've seen extremely little of catgirl. The now dead gold devil at least had a couple more speaking lines - tho even their death wasn't exactly emotionally charged. Having a repeat of that with the catgirl, who was brandishing death flags from the very moment she was introduced, would take things from a narrative fluke to a fumble IMO.

I mean, shit, at least before jumping into the mouth have her pray that this job's payment is going to reach her sick mother or some token effort like that. If it's just gonna be a human sacrifice for the sake of further cementing of how awful the world is, that's just ow-the-edge-type edginess to me.

IMO it's more interesting to see characters struggle and suffer until they've been fully explored and spent. Then they can serve one last purpose by being dramatically discarded. Otherwise it can easily lead to desensitization and readers trying not to get attached to characters.

Stripping away character agency like that is IMO only compelling if it's played for drama and either the character or their victims is aware of their lack of free will.
