>And get off your high horse, people have been feeding birds in ponds for centuries. That's not a dependency complex, that's a reliable diet.

Depending on the place, it can be an issue as many migratory birds that get fed in parks end up not migrating and end up being unable to survive the winter.

Invertebrates deserve to be killed. Why do you think we feel no remorse to do so? Sympathizers wouldn't be around had we not develop so much protection against nature.
>>
>>94795295
They do/don't.

Bugs work on a different level than us.

First, think about what pain IS. It is a physical stimuli that causes an extremely unpleasant effect in your mind. Pain is identified by receptors in your skin sending signals that something is interacting with them, and that signal is then translated into a bundle of information in your spine which is sent to the brain which then interprets what that signal means.

The difference between the feeling of a tickle and a knife going through your thumb is WHICH receptors are triggered and in what way, and how much they are "screaming"; having the middle of the thumb nerves suddenly panic because they've been separated from where they are supposed to be for example gives your brain a pretty good idea that you are now thumbless. The difference between the feeling of touching something and having a mallet smash your hand is how strong a signal the nerves are sending. Your brain, now having an idea of what's going on, sends a message which could simply be a cessation of normal sensation which causes you to look at your limb, or HUGE SCREAMING FUCKING STOP TO EVERYTHING BECAUSE HOLY SHIT WHAT JUST HAPPENED WAS REALLY FUCKING BAD.

The blunt answer to if insects feel pain like us is no. They don't have the same nerves, they don't have the same brain translating stimuli to physical feeling, and they don't have the same chemical that represents what we call pain.

HOWEVER, insects do feel something like pain. They are aware when something is damaging them and it goes through a different process for a different chemical that still tells them something bad happened.
Without the ability to speak to a bug, we can't know if they actually feel something wrong or if it is like a red light in their head saying "check arm". But they react like it is unpleasant, and also react with what looks like fear. Then again, pic related is actually cannibalism. Appearance isn't fact.

I think they have enough of an aversion to the sensation of losing limbs to assume the message their conscious faculties are getting is more urgent than a casual "maybe you might want to get away from here eventually." That said, they don't seem to go into total shock very easily. They'll keep trying to run whatever the trauma is, like that poor bee. Humans seem to blue screen from stimuli a lot faster. Does that mean the stimuli is harsher? Or bugs just react differently? I don't know. Just my half-a-cent observation.

In real life, that's pretty much what happened, except in reverse. Orchids evolved to look like bugs to trick bees into landing on them. Then mantises realized they were bugs, turned pinked, and started hiding among the fake bugs to grab other real bugs who fell for it.

Hear me out /co/, I think wasps are cool.
Bees are cute. They're like these delicate cuddly milfs with copter backpacks. Big breasts hidden under comfy sweaters. Sweet personalities.
Wasps on the other hand are just like jet pilots. They're fit and have sweaty abs, and wear cool pilot goggles and aviator jackets. They're brash and tomboyish, and a bit conceited, but that's part of their charm.

I, for one, love and welcome both. I like both cute and cool things.

>I always think of dragonflies as athletes or daredevils but this is fine too
Actually, now that I think about it a daring personality fits more with the sporty, adventurer girl they form in my mind. Dunno why I said calm and serious, kinda got mixed feelings in there.

I wonder what spiders are. I suppose it depends on which families. Most typical webbers feel like they could be alluring mature women with hardcore bdsm tendencies.
And jumping spiders, maybe hyperactive short girls?

>>94809129
>They also aren't as bad as certain people would have you believe
They get nervous when there's a potential predator around like, for example, a strange camera.
Believe me, I know about that, but if you're going that route then don't treat wasps as fucking monsters that pass their days stinging every single human they see without a provocation. You know that's not how they work.

Anyway, they still don't feel like knights to me. They feel more like ninjas. I think horned beetles are more like knights.
>>
>>94809171
I think of beetles like masked wrestlers. Mantises are more sword-y.
>>
>>94809215
>I think of beetles like masked wrestlers
I like this a lot. Buff wrestler girls that do suplexes: perfect.
But still, mantises are too light and fast, which are characteristics opposite of your typical heavy armored knight. And yes, I know knights can move faster than what it seems, but not lightning fast like a mantis.

Ultimately prove as in "I know what the thing is thinking"? Of course not.
But there are plenty studies that seem to indicate they suffer from pain, and both biologists and arachnologists consider those studies to be valid.

We may not be able to literally see them but there's enough evidence to accept that they are there.

Still impressive considering most species of that family measure in millimeters.
