The reason he happily followed the orders of anyone that bossed him around is because that's the shtick of his class/aspect combo. The reason why he's miserable during the credits isn't just because he's surrounded by copies of his friends and loved ones, but also because everyone's off living their lives and there's no one around to boss him around anymore.
He's basically gonna be depressed until either Vriska comes back, he dies, or some other adventure/event happens that requires him to be bossed around.

the thing with John is that, when it comes to those he care about, He would risk everything for them, but not just because he cares about them, but because he feels completely inadequate compared to them. He feels as though they are more important and he is a loser by comparison. Hints of this was shown when Gamzee used his chucklevoodoo on him to give him nightmares and that gave form in the writings on his walls, the times he relized conair sucked ans his criticism about the movie is parallel to his own adventure through the medium, and his peep talk with Jake, where he shit talks about batman even though the example given was basically what he did to caliborn. John feels he's an idiot who doesn't deserve happiness and no one is trying to prove him otherwise. the only person who he feels that truly cares for him is dead and he kinda blames himself for it.

I don't think it was that Kanaya was never good, she was interesting enough from the start and early conversations with John, Dave, Rose and Karkat were really well written and she was a fun snarky character who didn't understand most of what the kids were saying and learned from them.

Kanaya was just never OUTSTANDING like the other patrons, she had a character and some real interesting points but post-Act 5 she regressed just like everything else and became the lovely cardboard standee we have today.

Sollux is another good character. He's not one of my favorites, but I could see that changing if there was more of him. What he does have is memorable, though.
The only thing I somewhat disliked about him is that his obsession with duality hurt the trolls; even with the fate of his entire race on the line, he didn't think twice about splitting everybody up into teams.
It seemed off for such a driven, no-nonsense character, especially since it wasn't necessary and they even stopped doing it later and united behind Karkat.

The great irony is that he was completely blind to how fighting against each other could be detrimental to his race, and the consequences manifested in Eridan, whose addiction to warfare Sollux was unwittingly feeding....
and then he was literally blind, and his race's hope destroyed.
I don't know if Hussie did that on purpose, but if he did it's genius.

I think people just really liked Vrisky Business. How can you blame them? Written by Hussie, amazingly drawn with expressive faces, hilarious dialogue. This is probably one of the best PSX comics, so of course people would want to see more like it.
