>>94780288
A lower price point doesn't always translate to more units sold and a larger total profit. Niche marketing needs high prices to sustain itself, and a 15-year-old cartoon probably qualifies.

>>
>>94780395
I think the bigger problem is that Aku is pure tangible evil so Ashi mastering "aku powers" through the power of love is stupid. It isn't a super-power, it's corruption itself. If she triumphs over it she should be purified of it, not gain control of it.
>>
I'll probably bite. There are enough superb episodes in five seasons, including the first three of the fifth season even if the rest is mediocre.
>>
>>94780288
What >>94780334 said, anime in Japan literally survives off people being willing to pay like $50 per volume for a show, $200-$400 a season. If putting the prices down would sell more units and make more profit, they would. It doesn't. So they don't. It might be "basic business" to lower prices and sell more if you're selling something like toilet paper, but not niche media.

Also, similar things apply to some mangas as well. Some mangas, for instance, Hayate no Gotoku (which got axed few months ago) used the special editions+exclusive contents to sustain the sells, and some merchandises as well. However, even readers and editors are tired of writer's shitty writing and shitty work after 13+ years.

Actually there are various details that have been lost, along with the colors being more muted in the DVD.

Compare the top (background paintings) images to the bottom (DVD)

If the remaster was done properly, these should look much closer to the original background paintings.

That's irrelevant because Samurai Jack was already paid for in-full by the network and that funding came from the same revenue streams that support the entire network. Buying this box set isn't keeping anyone in a job, it's literally just extra money for Turner. The real reason it's $100+ is because they know some idiots will pay that much, and that eventually you'll be able to grab this dumb box for half of whatever they could release it for off of Amazon.

It wasn't animated in SD, just mastered in it. Format limitations of the early 00s meant it could only go out in compressed analog 480, but because it was animated digitally now they can easily go back to the original files and export them as 1080p. Same thing happened with a few anime from the late 90s.

>>

According to [unsourced] information on Wikipedia, CAPS rendered at 2048px wide (with variable height) but the actual assets could be much, much higher resolution.

Hopefully Cartoon Network used something like CAPS or better.
>>
>>94780288
And I'd buy it for 10 dollars not 30+
>>
>>94781686
Objection!
Then why wouldn't Nick/Paramount release a Blu-ray of Avatar: The Last Airbender because they said that "it was animated in SD and they have to upscale it if they want in to be in HD"?
Then, why wouldn't they re-render the entire series in 1080p Full HD.
Granted, there are exceptions like South Park since that was in 3D CGI, and it is very easy to re-render in HD, but it doesn't apply to most shows or even movies.

And also, there are some 4K Ultra HD Blu-rays of animated films but they are usually mastered in 2K (and in Your Name.'s case, it was only mastered in 1080p), yet they didn't do a re-render for the 4K release, they only did an HDR pass.
I might get it for Your Name. (Your Name. is the only 2D animated film in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray right now) since it probably only has 1080p assets (and it can even probably be re-rendered), but for 3D CGI animated films like Trolls, The Peanuts Movie and Sing, they should've re-rendered them.
Why wouldn't they re-render the stuff they made in 4K?
But the HDR pass actually made the movies more vibrant and prettier.
My favorite 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray animated movies right now are Trolls and Your Name. if we're only measuring by visual spectacle, even if they are not native 4K masters.
And this is more inexcusable since apparently, most of the earlier Pixar films, at least before Finding Nemo, were rendered in a resolution lower than 1080p.
And Pixar apparently re-rendered most of their films in 2K, and some in 3D.

>>94781771
They never used CAPS, it was proprietary software for Disney.

And speaking of Disney, I wish they release their animated films in 4K, especially Treasure Planet since that movie is probably one of Disney's prettiest animated films.
>>
>>94781954
>Nick/Paramount
You realize different shows can be made with different tools, right?
>most of the earlier Pixar films, at least before Finding Nemo, were rendered in a resolution lower than 1080p
Again, just because they were RENDERED at 1536 by 922 (or whatever) doesn't mean the source material isn't available in a higher quality.

CAPS was rendered at 2K and unfortunately most or all of the assets were scanned that their largest appearance on-screen fits this resolution (so if something filled at most half the screen, it would be scanned at half the resolution)

But you don't know which system Cartoon Network used so it's pointless to compare to Pixar or Nickelodeon.

There's one interview with the Samurai Jack crew (can't remember which at the moment) where they call the software "Digital Ink and Paint" or something. Perhaps it was just some internal software used at Cartoon Network. You don't know. I don't know. Only the people who worked with it know.

Besides unflipping the pages, I wonder if this will have a new translation. Was the old bad in anyway? I've never heard it trashed, but how the hell would I know?

This release is somehow encouraging me to get the old Marvel color version. Coloring black and white art is usually blasphemy or done on the cheap, but Marvel absolutely nailed it. It helps that Otomo is very sparing with his shading leaving a colorist lost of room to work.

Shit, didn't notice this post. I'm sorry. The old translation depending on what you're thinking of wasn't bad at all, I enjoyed it pretty well on my multiple reads through it. I can remember a few typos here and there but those are a given for a manga of that size. The publisher is Kodansha Comics which is the best translation IMO.

I'm pretty sure that the anniversary I posted is the colored edition. Not sure if it's the Marvel version though, it looks good either way and I'm planning on getting it at some point.
>>
>>94788275

The Kodansha issuing is basically just a reprint of the Dark Horse version. Same translation. I've never heard anybody complain about that translation, but as you could tell from the flipped pages, it was made in a different era. This new release is also not going to redraw over the sound effects. I also don't know if the Marvel and later Dark Horse versions used a different translation. I feel like I should.

Anyway, this won't be the color edition aside from whatever pages Otomo colored himself. Marvel colored the entire thing. It looks damned good, but not something ever seen in Japan or collected anywhere. So if a chapter lead off it's particular months book or had color inserts or whatever, those will be in this. But not the entire thing in color.

Still gonna buy the box set for it at some point because I want the physical prints, but Christ that's weird. No way I'm paying that much for those colorized prints, what some of those people are charging is ridiculous.

What were they thinking?

But there's already a fan made version of this in 1080p.

>remastered in HD
>what they meant is UPSCALED or SD Bluray

Only the new season was full HD.
>>
>>94789326
It may turn out that the original series was produced with methods that will allow it to be re-rendered in HD, but we can't really know for sure until an official announcement/more details emerge.
>>
So, what will the exclusive content be? Some Samurai Jack video game?
A bonus episode? Replacing the dead robot enemies from season 1-4 by actual humans dying and bleeding and fighting for Aku?

Its not gonna be like that, mark my post, the earlier seasons are just gonna be upscaled, for obvious reasons.

Its been said before in this board, that most american shows were mastered on video tape as opposed to film, regardless of how the animation was done, specially multi-outsourced shows from the 80s and 90s, and only the japs save the original film elements of whatever they did.

Plus having to essentially, remade the whole episode and recreate things like transition effects, fade outs, speed up footage, credits etc.

Its just not worth it.
>>
>>94789301

It's like they knew Marvel did a bang up job colorizing it, but didn't want to bother cleaning it up to fit in with an actual manga.
>>
>>94789430
>most american shows were mastered on video tape
Are you retarded, there are like two or three shows that were mastered on tape.
>>
>>94789301

What sucks is I know of a local shop that's practically giving away most of it they're selling it for so cheap. But of course not the few later issues that go for juuust enough money to make that a dumb idea.
>>
>>94789466
Dude, look at most of the shows from the 80s and 90s, look at the credits, look at all the times they speed up the animation and it looks like it was done on VHS.
>>
>>94789450
That's such a shame.

>>94789476
Extremely jealous, I'd eat those up in a heart beat if I could. Maybe I should look around at my local shops and see if I'm lucky.
>>
>>94789430
Most of the time it's not worth it, yes, which is why it's so rarely done. There are exceptions though, as Disney has been doing real HD transfers of all their Disney Afternoon 80s/90s stuff.
But the fact that this cartoon is getting a release on BD from Warner Home Video at ALL shows that it's a special exception, because that's even rarer.
We will have to wait and see how well it's done.
>>94789466
He's not wrong, it was indeed pretty common to edit on video, especially for Nick and syndicated stuff (as they made use of video effects like speedup and transitions in their shows).
Not always though, Dexter's Lab was cut on film for instance (verifiable because a negative was the source for the copy of "Dexter's Rude Removal") and thus the other early Hanna-Barbara Cartoon Cartoons probably were too.

We have Attack number 1 restored on HD years ago

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNUZjZrRUC4

I suppose that the japanese remaster their shows mostly for preservation purposes, and since they stuck to the old fashion way of cutting the shows on film up until the mid 90s, in hindsight, it ended working at the end.

>(Your Name. is the only 2D animated film in 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray right now
nope Gundam Thunderbolt compilation film is the first anime in 4k BD and was made native 4k

>S5 cover is the advertisement that never happened in-show
Should've been the one with his armor and Aku.
>>
I'll probably just go for season 5 right now
Here's hoping they have an exclusive Steelbook somewhere, maybe with some alternate cover art
>>
They definetly need to have a "Marathon Mode" like the Blu-Rays for Dragon Ball Z,

imo Season 5 gels together really well as one full experience, and that's the way Genndy intended it too

But then you cut out most of the Dean Martin song

Dang, I forgot about that, youre right
>>
>>94779937
it's an obvious cash grab but it is actually cool that they're re-releasing in HD (all streams online are SD and even my own DVDs are SD)
the metal print is silly but the show being remastered in HD is definitely worth something

Gee, I wonder.

Your waifu a fucking shit, there are way better Samurai Jack girls that deserve a figurine. One prime example is Jack himself.

I got the initial Panty & Stocking DVDs, which were only available format at first. Sadly I don't think the series was ever in a 1080 HD format, the Blurays I assume are just the same quality as the DVDs, maybe a bit sharper. Look how sharp the text is compared to the actual show, I think was from a Bluray rip. Even the free HD copy I got off the Playstation store shows the same thing. I really prefer Bluray over DVD but I see no point if there's no improvement on the quality.
I rebought Cowboy Bebop on Bluray because it's in HD, has a nice bunch of extras. Sadly the Movie Bluray doesn't have any of the extras that were on the DVD, and really shitty menu screen with some stock music.

Funimation is garbage when it comes to Blurays, their release on BD of the series, likely its just a shit upscale from the DVDs cause they were cheapstakes.

There was also this era when they just cheaply released older digi-anime pre 2007 shows on Bluray and they were worst then upscales, FUCKING HORRENDOUS, they even did same with some then recent shows that were just starting to get BD releases in japan.

No, this is how P&S is, even in Japan. The end credits show it too, and this one was from its broadcast.
Funi is cheap though. All their DVDs and Blurays are made in Mexico. Some I've gotten had like a scratch on them.
