What I dislike about the Joker is that he pretends he's about fun and chaos when he really just hurts, kills and scares people.

A better Joker would rob a bank, cover all the money in very powerful itching or sneezing powder and throw the money out of a helicopter. Then laugh while a bunch of suddenly rich citizens scratch themselves bleeding or sneeze until they have to go to the hospital.

I like the idea that Joker started off as the "Prince of Pranksters" who committed robberies and other crimes for the sake of fun with his first sidekick Gaggy but got more and more psychotic and cynical until becoming the truly psychotic edgy Joker we know today.

What's even the point of having the entire rouge's gallery becoming Joker and Riddler's henchmen? It's out of character for them and it has no purpose in the story. The exact same story could have been told that Joker and Riddler have a gang war using their usual henchmen that stalemates and leaves a shit ton of civilian casualties.

It's neat that we have a really good Joker story, as we haven't had one of those in a while.

Mostly because he is obsessed with duality and so he chose crime as a way to channel his aggression and madness opposite to his previous identity, with the coin toss acting as the balance between his two identities.

Comics never really explain too well why Harvey chose to become a criminal mastermind after his accident (it's not really important either way), but Eye of the Beholder explains that he got his hands on a bunch of files made by attorney Adrian Fields that incriminate hundreds of criminals, and would allow Harvey to control a sizeable portion of the criminal underworld. The attorney dies and Harvey takes off with the file, and although he still gets incarcerated at the end of the comic, presumably this is how he was able to reinvent himself as a powerful criminal mastermind (not that it really explains why he did so in the first place).

The problem I have with this story is at this point in their careers, neither man would actually fight each other for this long or be involved in this war when there is literally triple the profit with half the lunacy elsewhere in the world.

Obviously in comic-book land all the other cops would be plants and break Joker out, or the Joker would actually wrestle the gun from the guy after he draws it for free irony points, or something like that. But still. It's astounding that someone that reviled and dangerous who has been in police custody that many times hasn't been shot "in self defense" yet.

Well in real life, the Joker would get a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig show trial that lasts months and then people decide to give him the chair. If a cop shot the Joker before he even got to the trial, there'd be an uproar and people would hang the cops in the armored car for it and the cops would go through the show trial of justified lethal force.

And after the Joker's gone, 3 more psychos will take his place. In Batman Beyond's example, a whole cancerous gang of psychos. And the Joker comes back again once.

Even if the cop(s) get through the trial, their lives would've been dragged through the mud and their careers done for. All for one clown. People keep hemming and hawwing about how nobody would try to get in the way of permanently removing the Joker but the whole point of the system is to prevent cops from killing people willy nilly no matter how obviously guilty they are. That's not justice. That's just pretending Dexter is a superhero.

This sounds like a Storytime of Pain in the making, from an outsider just reviewing the thread's comments.

He can warp and contort characters however he wants and he never has to deal with characters' history, limitations, or characterization if it doesn't suit him. Also somebody like Bruce Wayne would probably dump a lot of money in making sure the orders to deploy into Gotham would never come through because the military coming in would fuck over the city harder than not anyway, because rebuilding the city after the military cuts off and destroys infrastructure in their campaign to clear the city would take years. And you assume the military wouldn't take massive casualties. If the military wants a chance, they probably would have to resort to war crimes levels of destruction and no American politician would endorse that, no matter how desperate Gotham is.
