I'm sorry anon. I wish you could. I've generally enjoyed the DCEU and credit Man of Steel for actually getting me to look past that whole 'boring flying brick' normie/Batfag view of Superman and actually read the stories. My favorites so far is First Thunder. I've been a DC fan for nearly two decades, never gave Supes a fair shake, and he's quickly become one of my favorites.

As someone who has been reading Superman since COIE first hit shelves, I am over the moon happy that the MoS and BvS """""""""""films"""""""""" have garnered new readers for the actual books, though. So I guess it's not all bad.

>>
>>94777732

I guess I'm just one of the percentage that liked the interpretation. I will say I look forwards to them making him more akin to post-Crisis/Superdad if the leaks are true, but he is close enough for me to enjoy him anyway.

I think you really had to have a fixation on an exact portrayal for MoS to be 'not muh'. I mean it makes sense, as it's why Superdad is back. Batman can and has been reinvented. Superman is... well... Superman. COIE created a renfition that has made fans accept no substitutes as far as I can see.

Except, trying to align someones views with you, and make them LESS happy with something, especially someone you don't even know, on such an unimportant subject, says more about you than it does the DCEU.

Are you sure you wouldn't be more at home in a Lex Luthor thread? You monster?

Because another little kid is completely in love with Superman. It's a shame the DCEU rustles so many older fans jimmies, as it's still winning those kids hearts, and you still see plenty of Superman costumes at halloween.

Hell, I saw three DC shirts in a local store. It was Superman, a gothic Batman skull, and Joker. I think a lot of people are worried the DCEU will 'change' Superman. But I don't think that's likely.

My biggest and really only issue is that because of how widely viewed films are, this becomes the standard view of the character throughout the general populous.

When asking a random person around the world to describe superman, odds are you're gonna get the snyder version to some degree....and that's the saddest damn thing in the world.

There's nothing wrong with people developing their own versions of a character, but claiming it to be the OG and dismissing everything to come beforehand is wrong.
>>
>>94779080
This desu. They want all the "impactful" and iconic moments, without everything that builds up towards making those moments what they are in the first place.

>oh no supermans dead
>isn't this such a world changing event?

No. It's not because there is no weight behind it.

I can understand that. It's how it's worked out for Marvel at least, as the exposure difference is so high. Chin up though bro, they might get him 'right' yet, and MoS and BvS just end up a forgotten blip.

It's not MoS and BvS that make me nervous. It's Avengers and Age of Ultron. I thought Zack Snyder absolutely delivered with his films, both visually and narratively, what I'd like to see in a modern Superman story. But while Avengers is ok, AoU really makes me doubt Whedon do right by the film with his reshoots.
>>
>>94779866

I think the best way to look at is that if you like the DCEU as is, the film is mostly Snyder and plotted, so there is limited damage Whedon can do, and if you dislike the DCEU, then Whedon can slap a whole lotta grease on the lens to mask the ugliness.

I'd settle for keeping the tone consistant with the DCEU so far, but making Superman lighter and more upbeat (less burdoned perhaps), and I suspect (even without the leaks) Whedon will do that. Keeping the Snyder tone but having a brighter Superman would really make the latter stand out all the more.

1500912243089.jpg
544KB, 1650x1268px
>>94779939

To add, I'm worried that if Whedon gets his own movies (other than Batgirl, whivh is going to be hilarious as she is made blandly competant, allowed to face no real hardship or suffer after the whole Black 'Monster' Widow fiasco) he will try and make the DCEU too bright. As much as I love Superman, the DCEU is is a pretty grim place at times.

Gotham as a whole, Professor Zoom and his relationship to Barry, a literal hell dimension every looming, the Vertigo-verse in the background unseen, Arthur's son and Black Manta, Jason and his fate, ect. Even Superman himself has gone through some shit.

Kryptonite was a mistake. It's become such a common thing, that all the villains are so knowledgable about, that Superman might as well just stay home (*shrug* "C'mon Bruce, you know as well as I do that they are going to pull out a certain green rock, and then I'm dead weight) or wear that lead-lined battlesuit from the Smallville S11 comic as his main costume.

Supes never beats the crap out of him, he wins by taking advantage of Brainiac's really weird one-arc weakness, not by overpowering him. Every attempt at the latter ends in failure. If nothing else, the punch-catch scene should make it really clear which one is physically stronger.

I've read that arc. There's no "second half" of the fight. There's literally that one-panel punch, then Superman knocks him out of the ship after using his freeze-breath. That's it.

Opposed to when people thought Superman was a boring boyscout with too much powers and far too unrelatable due to how perfect and invulnerable he was?

Get off your high horse.
>>
>>94781792
I said "after that one-panel punch." Because after that it was literally just freeze-breath + knocked out of the ship. And after being knocked out of his ship Brainiac is seemingly disabled and unable to fight back . And the reason he did that at all was because attempting to fistfight Brainiac just got him overpowered and his hand crushed.

At no point did Superman overpower Brainiac. Every physical clash they had was extremely lopsided in Brainiac's favor from their initial confrontation to the fist-catch scene.

>STILL apparently holding back even as his hand is being fucking crushed to the point it's bleeding (apparently it's fake blood and he thought it'd be hilarious to pretend to have difficulty)

superfags are literally the worst. they don't give a shit about consistent characterization or blindingly obvious story beats as long as it lets them pretend their hero has infinite power.

That word doesn't mean what you seem to think it does.

Can you literally not see the heat vision to the face, kick in the back and the charge through ship wall?

Five entirely different attacks one after another with no fight back seems pretty overpowered to me, friendo.

>That word doesn't mean what you seem to think it does.
Way to cut off the second half of the statement. I consider the kick to be a part of just knocking him out of the ship.
>Five entirely different attacks one after another with no fight back seems pretty overpowered to me
Then you're wrong, because spraying Brainiac with heat vision, freeze breath, and finally knocking him out of the ship with flight has nothing to do with being "overpowered." Superman had managed to land several consecutive attacks on Brainiac already without immediate retaliation earlier. It didn't matter because his blows did shit (Brainiac explicitly said that his physical blows were "nothing") and Brainiac was always able to easily recover and regain control because of his blatantly superior physical strength. The difference this time is that Brainiac was totally disabled by being knocked into the swamp and so wasn't able to retaliate after that series.

It's almost like Superman isn't a fucking idiot and the scene was meant to show him being clever in the face of a superior foe that the author established in the exact same scene as being capable of overpowering Superman in a straight physical brawl.

[pic related from New Krypton again shows that Brainiac is strong as fuck]

There's no real context to this one panel though. There's not even a real fight, Brainiac just finds Superman and decks him, then they get interrupted. Later in the arc Superman tackles Brainiac from behind as he seems to be overpowering Zod, but again they get interrupted before they can have a proper brawl.

>people thought Superman was a boring boyscout with too much powers and far too unrelatable due to how perfect and invulnerable he was
Casuals have always thought that and always will, and the reason is simple: in the hands of a weak writer, that's exactly what he is.

But the same is true of any hero. In the hands of a weak writer, Batman's a moody emo bitch who's far too unrelatable due to how perfect his fighting and prep-work are. In the hands of a weak writer, Spider-Man is a whiny quip machine whose sole purpose in life is to be shit on by the universe.

Your argument has no weight.

Agreed >>94777232 - I definitely have higher expectations but I still suspect I'll be disappointed until Aquaman comes out.

There are things to credit in MoS, but key parts of the first two acts and nearly the entirety of the final act just mar any of those for me. But at least I could bring myself to rewatch MoS before BvS came out. I have the extended edition and all I did with it was fast forward it to see if there was really anything substantially different that wasn't simply additional action, language or nudity and my finger never left that FFWD arrow till the end credits.

A few of Ryan Sook's were really on point and I'm generally in favor of anything, but the first one, with the baby and the wires, was just not what was on my mind.

I also wasn't a fan of either the issue two main or variant covers but didn't have the problems some folks did with the contents themselves.

But I do think that the cover you picked and this one were some of the best of their kind that we've had in a while.
>>
>>94779080
>>94779487

It works out that way for Marble because granite fans just have, by and large, that version of say Iron Man (all of them expect him to to be quippy, for example, and have a drinking problem), Star Lord, Hawkeye, Black Widow, etc.

Even the few portrayals you see in animation don't particularly differentiate too much from the MCU version and their animation never reached the number of fans that the DCAU, Fleischer Studios/Famous Studios, or other live action version of Clark Kent/Superman that we have had.

Most of the time, what I see is people referring to MoS as Murderman or the murderverse (inclusive of Batman, post BvS) and I don't think those people are thinking of either as the definitive version, in the same way they think of RDJ as the definitive IM
>>

Brainiac's son/clone once fought Lobo to a standstill and he lacks all of Brainiac's inorganic enhancements, so adult Coluans (or at least Brainiacs) are clearly /very/ strong. That coupled with the fact that the force fields they Brainiacs use are pretty much indestructible and that they have been shown to be able to learn new fighting styles incredible fast means that they are indeed a bit of an obstacle even for Supes. But they are also often kinda crazily obsessive about things and that makes them neglect certain other things, which is what makes both of them vulnerable (1 moreso than 2 though).

Brainiac 3 and 5 are much smaller, less muscular and younger than the first two so they obviously aren't as strong, but 3 is brutal in every way and good at techniques while 5 is usually very good at using a combination of force fields, trickery and the powers of various teammates. And they both also have issues with hubris.

Sorry, I've been in another thread. But yeah, it looks good, thanks.

I uploaded the original Samne, there's a whole collection of artists who did a nice variety of line art (or even colorized) art based on a theme and I really liked the ones Samne did, Doc Shaner also did some, there's some great Plasticman ones, and some nice Bucky Barnes as well as Calvin and Hobbes. It was a really great project while it was going on.

Someone colorized that first Samne and someone else is now posting it in these threads, so I'm just trying to provide more fodder.

It's nice to see a lot more new images in these threads, it often seems (even if it's not the same people every week) that we're reposting a lot of the same images over and over.

Then so is Jimmy. Whereas he really should look either more like a kid, more like the B&W and early colorized TAOS on broadcast TV, or similar.

I mean, I do like her work. I think I'd put her with a good writer but I'm not fond of the clothing choices - I'm not sure an editor would let her fly with these. American Alien did dress both Clark and Superman a bit differently than the norm, but nothing that was going to be this OOC.

Superman Returns has definite problems, I always fast forward through certain sections when I rewatch it, but the save of the Shuttle to the save of the jet down to the baseball diamond is still one of the best examples of a live action Superman film that is 'most comic accurate' (since we're tossing that around); with the save of the Daily Planet globe, the fire shaft image, and the flight image, especially up to the stars by himself, and gif attached are also pretty nifty images that are comic accurate.

It indicates that, at least among the modern generation, Man of Steel is considered the more successful film. It's rating might be lower, and let's be honest a 75% agg isn't bad at all, but it's held that slightly lower rating with almost four times the number of people voting.

I really don't understands why the critics despise Snyder so much. While the DCEU could have done better up til WoWo, the critical reception and audiance reception just don't line up.

Except that is totally false, because that's exactly what MOS did for some of us. It's the reason I'm here right now and have Superman trades among the Batman stuff on my bookshelf.

Very few people 'hate' Superman, unless they are already comic readers and pride themselves on being edgy. i.e teenagers, generally. But a lot of people don't understand how human he is or his personality, and while it might have gone too far with the 'human weaknesses' element for a lot of people for others it made us give him a chance beyond the concept of 'overly bright looking flying-brick'.

As living proof your argument is bullshit, what's your real angle?

He can literally see how you are held together, maybe read your DNA, and see YOU and how unique from ever other seven billion humans you are, and everything you could be.

Most of RT is useless because they use a lot of website and 'not respectable' critics for their critics score. That's way, if you are going to argue 'CRITICS LIKE/DON'T LIKE' either XYZ film or 123 film, MetaCritic is a better site.

When Superman - The Movie came out, 70% of the sites that are being used for reviews didn't even exist. While some of those sites have gone back and retrospectively reviewed S-TM, that's not really legitimate.

It would be comparable to something like someone going back and reviewing Star Wars (A New Hope) from the New York Times today and replacing the review that was done (assuming the NYT did one) when the movie came out in the 80s. It would be hard for a critic to review SWs in the current environment, knowing what they know, having seen the additional trilogy films and the prequel etc. Likewise, it's hard for current sites to review S-TM and not have comparisons to even movies that came out after it, for good or bad (Batman & Robin, for example).

>>94799941
>It indicates that, at least among the modern generation, Man of Steel is considered the more successful film.

Finally, those numbers are BS. You can find similar rankings and audience votes on iMDB, where S-TM is far, far higher.

Furthermore, the fact that S-TM inflation adjusts to 3x the ticket sales of MoS proves with actual, conclusive dollars/butts in seats versus internet BS voting, that more people liked one versus the other.

They do show her with what is more properly a cloak, not an actual cape, since neither the Greeks nor the Amazonians would wear capes.

For that matter, the drawing really shouldn't be drawn to make it look like Bruce can fly, since he can't without exterior mechanisms.

It always seems to come down to comparisons. No one is saying that Man of Steel is universally loved, nor CR wasn't a more lovable Superman, However an average of 7 (point something) out of 10 across all review sources is far from bad or even average.

People stating it was a failure just because they hate is it objectively wrong, straight from the numbers.

Pick a character or team you like and star from their most recent launch.

Or you could just read an event/limited run. They're pretty good for catapulting you in. Blackest Night, Sinestro Corps war, Superman Birthright, etc etc

Superman is pretty great right now. As is Hal Jordan Green Lantern Corps. Both are 25ish issues in. Easy to catch up with.

Google images search recommended reading for a character and you'll get a billion start off points. Pic related.
>>

First of all, don't get me wrong. I think Superman Returns had problems but I also think it would have a better verse to build a connected universe with Nolan Bats except for Christopher Nolan having multiple solid rods up his ass about Gotham being some isolated island of isolated lonesomeness. And better is relative, it still would have required a fair amount of retooling.

Likewise MoS was a bad film to hang a universe on, for multiple reasons. I don't hate it and I'd agree with you that hating something doesn't make it a failure. But MoS is not a success in any relative terms.

You are considering 70% as something good, when it's essentially a D+, C- grade. Man of Steel, a SUPERMAN movie, featuring the first superhero ever, and arguably the most iconic and best known image on the planet, made less many than a movie with VILLAINS. MoS made less domestically and made less WORLDWIDE.

Justice League will easily make more and I would be willing to be actual cash that Aquaman will likely make more, meaning that MoS will be #5, quite probably #6, within 12 months. It will likely be the Incredible Hulk of the DCEU, that lowest grossing movie that people still wonder if it's part of the MCU, ignoring that fact that their powerhouse manlet was in it's post film/credit tease.
>>
>>94805439

Dark Days is a mistake to try to use as a starting off point for comic books.

The DCU is pretty wide. You need to pick some part of it (for example, this is a Superman thread, are you actually interested in Superman stories, or do you want to read about the Green Lanterns, or about the Justice League - or other teams/team up books, etc. And then you have to ask for recommendations when you can tell people what you want and seek. Also, check out recommended reading lists.

The Batman Superman book from the New 52 was decent, although you'll be confused if you start there.

The Superman/Batman team up book (about 80+ issues plus annuals) start up really excellently (they even made animation versions of the first two arcs) are excellent. This series also features a lot of the Justice League and DC members regularly so you'll get familiar enough with them and their allies.

one thing I always found funny about Superman's powers is not that they are infinite basically. It's that there (was) an entire planet full of people would theoretically be just as powerful.

I'm sort of a new Superman reader and I understand Krypton needs to be gone to have a reasonable DCU but what explanation is possible that such a highly advanced civilisation didn't go out and colonize the known universe? and then on the way, discover that they had innate godlike powers under Yellow or Blue stars?

Depending on the current state of the canon they were either so xenophobic that they only ever sent drones and robots into space, or they were galactic conquerors but had read War of the Worlds so they never left their ships.
