Does the trope the-black-character-dies-first work so effectively because people actually want the black character to win, even without knowing anything about them, intentionally invoking a bad feeling when they don't? A sort of Friend-we-never-knew.

I mean, if they were a white character it would be like - should I care they died? The thing with minorities (which is a relative term) is that they're still somebody even when they're nobody. They come with automatic sympathy as an underdog, which can be a double edge sword - There's no disinterest. You want to like a character - and they either prove themselves likable or you hate them.
