Brave is the only of those I really have a problem with, but it's true that the pattern in effect is denying any actual growth to the characters like in your latter examples, lest somebody is offended for implying they're not perfect as "themselves"

Characters don't *need* to base their arc in personal growth every time (Moana and Rapunzel are about validating what they already are because they already are positive characters -in a no particularly annoying way- to begin with), but it is a problem when the narrative CLAIMS they're growing but they really are not, like it happened with Merida. The only lesson to learn is Brave is that if you do whatever the fuck you want and say you're sorry a lot, you'll eventually get your way.

Making films without feminism in mind is how you make feminist films desu. I mean that's how Kiki's Delivery Service got made the way it was, when Miyazaki came on to the project he got the idea to make the film for young country girls that would move to the city and get overwhelmed by it all. There was no intention to make it feminist, just to make a film about a girl, for girls. When you know your audience and make a film honestly, instead of a big sweep of ideas to get as many asses in seats as possible, that's how you make a good movie with good characters.

Is a magical alien warrior princess not allowed to be superhumanly strong? That's a "male power fantasy" tier non-criticism.

It's not like it's even unjustified, she's been trained to fight monsters since she was a damn toddler because
1) Her parents are pretty shitty at parenting and basically had the Royal Guard raise her.
2) It is literally the Queen of Mewni's job to fight monsters, the survival of the kingdom has been dependent on the Queen's power for centuries.

How is this an issue in a lighthearted story? Besides her personality and companions help just as much.

The people telling her what to do include her mother trying to lock her up again and a sleazy thief telling her to forget going on her adventure
>Want for more©
Again, locked in a tower her whole life
>Born with magical powers
She has magical powers cause she almost died as a kid, and being granted those powers got her kidnapped by a witch

I didn't like that they tried the whole parking duty "because shes a bunny". You can ask any cop and they'll tell you that that's where you start out. It's kinda viewed as a hazing the new guy thing, but it serves a purpose and allows new officers to become familiar with areas.
Instead it's don't follow procedure and expect to be rewarded for it.

That was the point, though. Remove her status as protagonist and Judy stops being sympathetic because she is actively trying to invoke Hollywood cop tactics in a world where Hollywood cop tactics are liable to get someone killed, and I seriously doubt that was accidental on the writers part.

Bogo had every right to be upset about Judy's behavior: she was appointed to the force without any sort of screening or input from him, she very obviously had zero respect for authority (a dangerous trait for a cop), and she was perfectly willing to forgo all police procedure just to prove she was a "real cop". She got exceptionally lucky that nobody died during the chase in Little Rodentia.
>>
>>94756801
>>94756902
Actually dunno if you mean for the entire series or right now.

But what I meant was those monsters don't start out as a threat because the first few episodes play it as just a comedy, then when more serious threats arrive the show gets slightly more serious as well and they do try for a sense of danger

Judy was all of this. Her training montage showed her as unrealistically competent. Pure gurl powah especially when she beat up the Rhino Guy. Listen, Judy Hopps is no different from other modern females since what? The 90s Gurl Powah wave?

Female characters are always written as unrealistically competent and always handled with the kid gloves when it comes to punishment. You can thank the stupid pussy beggar loser males for this shit. These kinds of losers don't want women to be flawed or grounded because they see twats as snowflakes.

Speaking of "snowflakes" it was this pussy beggar mentality of a delicate snowflake what made Elsa transform from villain to glorified role model to little girls (and by that I mean grown women) who also shirks responsibility without a care in the world and a MAN needed to somehow get the blame to become the film's bad guy.

By "kids" you mean girls. Any boy who tries to mimic Elsa's values is going to get his ass kicked. Boys who imitate females thinking they got no accountability are going to get punished and are going to learn the most basic difference between men and women.

Women can afford to make mistakes, shirk responsibility, aren't punished for misdeeds and if they are? Slap on the wrist. Men? They get castigated most of the time for getting out of line.
>>

Mary Sue bitch who avoided punishment because conveniently she killing a whole galaxy automatically means that somehow it is still alive and the people can go back to their homes. The power of female characters to not face consequences for their immoral behavior.

A Mary Sue is an idealized and perfect character with no meaningful character flaws. Dominator, who was shown to be incredibly lonely in the series finale, falls out of the Mary Sue criteria, because a real Mary Sue would be completely happy destroying galaxies all alone and would have no desire for companionship and the intellectual stimulation derived from interaction with others, and would thus be an ultra-efficient force of nature, and not a playground bully. There's a difference between being a Mary Sue and being competent.

>>Sure Luke did the exact same thing

No he didn't, not until RotJ could he actually face Vader, and even then it took a while to beat him. That was after losing his hand from the second movie after Luke though he could defeat Vader in one on one combat.

The only thing Luke could do was fly an X-Wing very, very well, due to his latent Force abilities. But, he'd been flying nimble ships through gorges for years as a kid.

Luke isn't a Gary Sue.

Maybe in your dirtbag cuntry cops do "parking duty" but not in mine. City & municipal govts handle that with meter maids. They dont even direct traffic at accident sites.. they're above all that eh.

It's almost as if they remade Rapunzel according to post-ISIS values.
This "everyone is nice and there's no danger in the world" shit couldn't fly anymore.

Sophistication you say?

And yet, the new live action movie tried to "improve" her to make her more of a feminist icon.
>>

Yeah but Luke needed three movies and two mentors to figure out most of the shit Rei just kind of figured out. Also Luke was a whiney bitch and had room to grow into a Jedi by Return. Rei has no major character flaws (except for being afraid of being alone?) and honestly I don't see her even needing a mentor or that much training.

People will shit on her but in the end she legitimately tries, and even if she fucks up it's almost never malicious and even when it is she realizes it and improves. She's a good character, who happens to be female.

No, they're are a lot of male characters done wrong. Not meaning to derail the thread but Steven Universe is a good example, there are a lot in other shows that fail completely.
>>94762327
I forgot about her, but yeah, almost everyone in that show is great, Toph is another great example. I don't know enough about mental illness but I think Azula is a decently written character that doesn't just feel like "crazy people are wild wacky and evil" though, she is evil that was more apparent when she was actually more sane.

she may make mistakes, she may grow as a character, and she may be nice and well intentioned, just like some other good protagonists, but that doesn't mean that she isn't annoying waifu bait.

Agree, but having your main character follow procedure without taking initiative makes a boring movie. The "rebellious rule bender" trope applies to both male and female characters, otherwise we wouldn't have Han, Indy, Kirk, Wolverine, Jason Todd, Guy, or Deadpool and the list goes on.
