A great recent example of fourth-wall-breaking being way overdone is Yooka-Laylee. It was like every line of dialogue. "We're in a video game!" Give it a rest

Probably my favorite instance of breaking the fourth wall and also addressing continuity concerns. It's not a handwave and actually manages to be funny in a way that's not insulting the reader.
